최인연 쓴 <성주사낭혜화상백월보광탑비>의 서풍-최치원·혜강 글씨와의 비교- (The Calligraphic Style of Nanghyehwasang-bi of Seongju-sa written by Choi In-yeon: Comparison with the writings of Choi Chi-won and Hyegang)

초록

낭혜화상 무염이 개산한 성주산문은 구산선문의 하나이며, 그를 기린 <성주사낭혜화상백월보광탑비>는 최치원이 지은 사산비명의 하나이다. 이 글은 9세기 말 최치원이 짓고 909년 최인연이 당나라에서 귀국한 후 어느 시점에 해서로 쓴 이 비의 서풍을 살펴보기 위한 것이다.
사산비명에 속하면서 최치원이 887년 짓고 쓴 <쌍계사진감선사대공탑비>, 최치원이 894년 짓고 혜강이 924년 쓰고 새긴 <봉암사지증대사적조탑비>와의 비교를 통해 이 비 글씨의 특징을 알아보았다. 비문의 글씨는 정방형과 장방형, 향세와 배세 등 여러 면에서 변화가 많은 원만한 서풍으로 쓰여 유창하다기보다는 너그럽고 후한 그의 천성과 어울리는 개성적 분위기를 풍긴다. 42세 이후에 쓴 최인연의 원만한 글씨는 방필의 굳셈과 배세의 힘참이 돋보이는 31세 청년 최치원의 글씨, 83세 노승의 완숙미가 두드러진 혜강의 글씨와는 확연히 구분되어 그만의 자가풍을 잘 표현했다. 또 행기가 있는 이 비의 해서를 9세기 중반 이미 성주사에 세워진 사적비인 <김립지찬성주사비>의 정연한 해서와 비교해 보면, 사적비와 선사비 서풍의 차이점을 쉽게 인지할 수 있다.
7-9세기에 세워진 통일기 왕릉비의 엄정한 해서와는 달리 최인연, 최치원, 혜강 세 사람의 해서에 공통적으로 가미된 행서의 필의는 서자의 성품, 교리에 얽매이지 않는 선을 추구한 선사의 사상 또는 선사비라는 비의 성격 등을 고려한 서풍의 선택으로 여겨진다. 최인연은 이 비에서 최치원, 혜강과는 다른 서풍으로 10세기 신라 해서의 일면을 잘 보여 준다..

Seongju Mountain School opened by Nanghyehwasang Muyeom is one of the Nine Mountain Monastery Schools, and Nanghyehwasang-bi of Seongju-sa is one of the Four Mountain Stele Inscriptions composed by Choi Chi-won. This paper is to explore the calligraphic style of Nanghyehwasang-bi of Seongju-sa written in regular script by Choi In-yeon who returned to Silla from T’ang in 909.
I examined the calligraphic characteristics of this stele by comparing with those of Jingamseonsa-bi of Ssanggye-sa, which was composed and written by Choi Chi-won in 887, and Jijeungdaesa-bi of Bongam-sa, which was composed by Choi Chi-won in 894 and written and engraved by Monk Hyegang in 924. The character forms both square shape and rectangular shape, and direction of vertical stroke is both facing each other and leaning on each other. It was written in amicable style with variety in many ways and shows the personality of Choi In-yeon that is naturally generous. The broad-minded calligraphy he wrote after 42 represents his own style and is distinguished from the style of Choi Chi-won written at 31 with the vigorousness of angular and leaning brush strokes and that of Hyegang written at 83 with the ripening of skilled brush strokes. Its regular script with the sense of running script is also distinguished from the Memorial Stele of Seongju-sa in regular script only, which was composed by Kim Rip-ji and already established in the middle of 9th century. It is the difference between the calligraphic style of monk stele and that of monastery stele.
Unlike the regular script of royal tomb stelae in strict style from the 7th century to the 9th century, those of Choi In-yeon, Choi Chi-won, and Hyegang with the senses of running script seem to be the choice of calligraphic style considered the nature of writer, the characteristic of monk with liberal thought, and the character of monk stele. Choi In-yeon shows one aspect of regular script in the 10th century of Silla by writing it in different style with Choi Chi-won and Hyegang.
