남해안 최영장군 사당과 해양신앙 -경남 및 부산의 최영장군 사당 사례연구- (General Choi Young's Shrine and Marine Faith in the Southern Coast of Korea)

초록

한국의 무속에서 억울하게 죽은 장군을 사후 신으로 모시고 제사를 지내는 장군신앙이 있는데, 해안지방에 숭배되는 신으로 서해안의 임경업장군과 남해안의 최영장군이 대표적이다. 제주 추자도를 비롯하여 남해안 지역에서 최영장군을 모시는 사당은 여수 남산동 영당, 남해군 미조면 최영장군 사당･남면 장군당, 통영 산양읍 장군당･사량도 최영장군 사당 등이 있는데, 기존의 선행연구에서는 이들 일대가 남해안 멸치어장 지대로서 최영장군은 멸치잡이의 해역신으로 좌정해 있다고 보고 있다.
그러나 남해안의 다른 지역의 최영장군 사당과 달리 부산의 최영 장군 사당, 즉 범일동 최영장군 사당, 수영동･감만동 무민사에만 그 연기설화에서 최영의 왜구 토벌 신화만 강조되어 풍어의 신의 성격을 찾아볼 수 없다. 그래서 본고에서는 경상남도에서 부산에 이르는 남해안 멸치어장의 최영장군 신앙과 부산 지역의 최영장군 사당의 해양 신앙의 상관성에서 경남 및 부산의 최영장군 사당을 둘러싼 종교문화사를 고찰하였다.
그 결과 부산에만 최영장군이 풍어와 관련된 연기설화나 용왕제가 없었던 이유는 1970년대 이후 부산이 급격히 도시화되면서 마을 앞바다가 개발되면서 어장이 없어지고, 마을 주민들이 더 이상 어업을 생계로 하지 않게 되었기 때문이다. 그러나 감만동 무민사가 이전 최영 장군을 모신 용왕당이었던 사실에서, 수영동 무민사의 용왕제가 한때 있었고 수영좌수영어방놀이의 용왕제가 남아 있는 사실에서, 범일동 최영장군 사당 이전에 용왕당이 있었던 사실에서, 최영장군과 풍어의 신과의 상관성을 엿볼 수 있다.
또한 남해안에서 실제로 수군 진영이 없었던 곳에는 최영장군을 마을 어장의 풍어의 신으로 모시는 사례는 없었으며, 반드시 멸치어장이 성행한 곳에서만 최영장군을 풍어의 신으로 모신 것도 아니었다. 요컨대 남해안에서 최영장군은 수군 진영이 있었던 곳에 모셔지면서 특정 멸치잡이뿐만 아니라 어장, 어업을 관장하는 신격으로 발전한 것으로 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

In Korean Shamanism, generals who died unjustly are worshiped as a general god after death. General Lim Kyung-up in the west coast of Korea and General Choi Young in the southern coast are representative gods. The shrines serving General Choi Young in the southern coast of Korea are distributed in Chuja Island of Jeju, Namsan-dong of Yeosu, Mizo-myeon and Nam-myeon of Namhae-gun, Sanyang-eup and Saryang Island of Tongyeong and so on. According to previous studies, these shrines are located near anchovy fishing grounds on the southern coast of Korea; as a result General Choi Young might be developed as a maritime god of anchovy fishing.
However, only origin story of General Choi Young's shrine in Busan such as the shrine of General Choi Young in Beomil-dong and Moominsa in Suyeong-dong and Gamman-dong emphasizes only the myth subjugating Japanese pirates; as a result, the character of the god of a good catch has disappeared. Therefore, this paper will examine General Choi Young's belief in anchovy fish farm of Gyeongsangnam-do Province and Busan. And then it will consider religious and cultural history of General Choi Young's shrine in the southern coast of Korea in the perspective of worship of sea deities.
According to the results of this research, the reason why the belief of General Choi Young did not relate to a good catch in the origin stories or the ritual for sea dragons in only Busan was that Busan rapidly urbanized after the 1970s, the fishing grounds disappeared as the coastal waters of the village were developed, and villagers no longer made a living in fishing. However, the relationship between General Choi Young and the god of a good catch can be seen in the fact that Moominsa of Gamman-dong was once a shrine for a dragon king, that there was a the ritual for sea dragons in Moominsa of Suyeong-dong as well as Suyeong Jwasuyeong Eobang Nori(Fishing Village Festival) and that there was a a shrine for a dragon king near the shrine of General Choi Young in Beomil-dong.
In conclusion, in the southern coast of Korea, there was a naval camp near the shrine of General Choi Young, but General Choi Young was not necessarily enshrined as the god of a good catch only in places where anchovy fishing grounds were popular. In other words, on the southern coast of Korea, General Choi Young was enshrined in the place where the naval camp was located, in which he had been developed as a god in charge of fishing grounds and fishing as well as specific anchovy fishing.
