서산시의 장소성 연구 − 고운(孤雲) 최치원(崔致遠, 857∼?)과 연계하여 − (The Study on the Placeness of Seosan - linked to Goun(孤雲) Choi Chiwon(崔致遠, 857∼?))

초록

본고는 서산시의 새로운 장소성 형성과 고운 최치원의 상관성을 거시적 관점에서 정리한 논문으로, 본고에서는 기왕의 연구 성과를 바탕으로 최치원의 삶과 사상 및 행적과 업적 등을 일별하여 현재적 의미를 추출한 뒤에, 서산시의 지리적․역사적․문화적 특징과 연결하여 둘 사이의 상관성을 추출하는 방식으로 논의를 진행하였다. 나아가 현재 서산시에서 개발하여 운영하고 있는 다양한 콘텐츠와 정책 등을 최치원과의 관련성 위에서 점검하고, 그 결과를 토대로 서산시의 장소성 형성의 방향을 제시하였다.
최치원 관련 유적과 유적지는 전국 곳곳에 늘려 있지만, 서산시의 지리적․역사적․문화적 소산이 최치원과 상관성이 가장 긴밀하다. 더욱이 귀국 후 고운이 보여주었던 국제적이고 개혁적이며 포월적인 면모가 서산시에서 지향하고자 하는 ‘문화가 어우러진 국제 관광 도시’ 및 ‘시민과 소통하고 공감하는 도시’와 잘 부합하는 만큼, 서산시를 ‘고운의 정신이 살아 숨 쉬는 장소’로 자리매김할 수 있는 가능성은 다른 지역에 비해 크게 열려 있다고 할 만하다.
다만 서산시의 장소성 형성과 지속 가능한 역사문화 관광 자원 개발을 위해서는 최치원의 삶과 사상을 현재의 관점에서 생산적으로 수용하여 지속적으로 서산 시민의 삶과 그들이 향유하는 문화 속에 녹여낼 필요가 있다. 앞으로의 최치원 관련 콘텐츠 개발 방향 또한 여기에 맞춰져야 할 것이다. 최치원의 이미지를 적극 활용하여 서산의 장소성을 새로이 구축할 필요가 있는데, 무엇보다 더 적극적으로 고운의 이미지를 선점할 필요가 있다. 최치원의 개혁적 정신은 시정에 적극 반영하고, 고운의 국제적 면모는 물류 및 관광 도시 개발 시 적극 활용하며, 고운의 포월적 인식은 역사문화 프로그램 개발 시 적극 반영할 필요가 있다. 고운의 이러한 특징적인 면모와 서산의 장소성을 연계하여 다양한 콘텐츠를 개발하고 제도로 뒷받침한다면 궁극적으로 ‘국제적인 도시, 서산’, ‘개혁적인 도시, 서산’, ‘포월적인 도시, 서산’, 즉 ‘고운의 정신이 살아 숨 쉬는 서산’으로 자리매김할 수 있을 것이라 기대한다.

영어초록

This paper is a summary of the relationship between the formation of a new place in Seosan and Choi Chiwon in macro perspective. For this purpose, this study extracts current meaning based on the results of the previous research on Choi Chiwon’s life, thoughts, actions and accomplishments. Then, this study is discussing with method which extracts correlation between the meaning and historical, geographical and cultural characteristics of Seosan linked to the meaning. In addition, various contents and policies developed and operated by Seosan are examined from the viewpoint of relevance to Choi Chiwon, and based on the results, the directions of formation of Seosan’s placeness are suggested.
As a results, this paper pay attention to his international, reformative and communal aspects which are current meaning and values of Choi Chiwon. The relics and ruins related to Choi Chiwon have been scattered throughout the country, but the geographical, historical and cultural divisions of Seosan are most closely related to Choi Chiwon. Furthermore, the international, reformative, and communal aspect that Goun showed after returning to Korea is in line with the ‘international tourist city with culture’ and ‘a city that communicates and sympathizes with citizens’ that Seosan wants to aim at. So, Seosan can be the place where ‘the spirit of Goun can live and breathe’ more than any other place.
However, in order to form the placeness of Seosan and to develop sustainable historical and cultural tourism resources, the life and ideas of Choi Chiwon must be productively accepted in the present point of view. It is necessary to continuously dissolve in the life of Seosan citizens and the culture they enjoy. The future development direction of content related to Choi Chiwon should also be adjusted to above things. There is a need to build a new placeness in Seosan by actively utilizing the image of Choi Chiwon. Above all, Seosan need to positively preoccupy the image of Choi Chiwon. The reformative spirit of Choi Chiwon should be actively reflected in municipal affairs, and the international aspect of Goun should be actively utilized in the development of logistics and tourism cities and the communal recognition of him must be positively reflected to develop historical and cultural program. If Seosan develops various contents and supports system by linking this characteristic aspect of Goun with the placeness of Seosan, ultimately, Seosan will be expected to become ‘International city, Seosan’, ‘Reformative city, Seosan’, and ‘the city where spirit of Goun is alive and breathe’.
