What was the ‘bataille pour la production’ in the post war era? Carried out in order to reconstruct the national economy destroyed by the war, it was a policy vigorously supported by the CGT and the French Communist Party, which both reached the height of their political influence during this time. This policy characterized the strategy of the CGT, which tried to expand its political influence in the national reconstruction under the name of the ‘working class’. In 1944, the Berliet firm in Lyon became one of the most significant places for the bataille pour la production. Marius Berliet, founder of Berliet Automobile, was accused of collaboration with Nazi Germany and his firm was immediately sequestrated by a decree from the Commissaire de la République of the Rhône-Alpes region. Thus, a member of the French Communist Party was appointed as a provisional administrator, and the management of the firm was entrusted to the ‘management committee’ which allowed trade unions’ representatives to make production decisions. Considered an experience of ‘workers’ management’, the situation of Berliet explicitly indicates the way the CGT mobilized the ‘working class’ in the reconstruction of the country. Here, the effort of the CGT found expression in ‘Stakhanovisme’ and the wage level was determined by the production level, not by the price raise which persisted in making workers’ living conditions worse in the post war period.
