양산 부부총의 매장 프로세스와 성격 재검토 (Burial process and features of Yangsan Bubuchong : A Review)

초록

양산지역의 중심고분군인 북정동고분군은 영남지역을 대표하는 삼국시대 고총고분 가운데 하나일 뿐만 아니라 신라의 고분문화가 낙동강 하류역으로 전개되는 과정을 이해하는데 있어서 가장 적합한 유적으로 평가되고 있다. 특히 양산 부부총은 5세기 후반대에 출현한 횡구식석실이라는 특이한 매장시설과 피장자의 사회적 지위를 보여줄 수 있는 금동관을 비롯한 여러 점의 금공품 및 다량의 토기와 철기, 그리고 5개체에 이르는 유해가 확인되어 추가장과 순장이 모두 이루어진 보기 드문 고분으로 인식되어 왔다. 하지만 이러한 인식은 실질적으로 매장주체시설의 세부적인 구조에 대한 기초적인 검토는 물론이고 주인공과 그 외 피장자들의 합장여부, 그리고 출토유물의 연대관 등에 대한 심층적인 연구가 충분하게 진행되지 않은 상태에서 통설로 굳어져 간 것임을 지적하지 않을 수 없다.
그 동안 축적된 조사 자료의 분석을 통하여 양산 부부총의 구조와 석실 내에서 발견된 피장자의 실체를 파악해 본다면, 발굴조사 시 봉토부에서 확인된 토층에 대한 잘못된 해석으로 석실 내 순장된 피장자를 추가장한 것으로 파악한 것과 신라에서 순장이 금지된 6세기 1/4분기 이후에도 여전히 순장의 장의습속이 진행되고 있으며 연속적인 고총고분의 축조가 강하게 유지되고 있는 정치집단을 신라의 직접지배로 인식한 기존의 연구는 극복되어야 할 것으로 생각한다.
양산 부부총의 매장 프로세스를 통하여 본다면 양산지역은 문화적으로는 친신라적인 성향을 띠고 있지만, 장의습속과 중심고분군내에 지배자의 권위를 상징하는 고총고분이 지속적으로 축조되고 있는 양상은 인정된다. 이는 해당지역의 지배집단이 아직 독자성을 가지며 실재한다는 것을 의미할 뿐만 아니라 신라는 양산지역에 대하여 완전한 직접지배를 이루지 못하였음을 암시하는 것이다. 하지만 양산 부부총 이후에 북정동고분군에서 더 이상의 고총고분이 축조되지 않고 있는 것으로 보아 6세기 2/4분기 이후 양산지역은 신라의 지방세력으로 급하게 재편됨과 동시에 지역의 중심고분군은 해체된 것으로 보인다.

영어초록

The ancient tombs in Bukjeong-dong, Yangsan are representative of the Three Kingdoms Period in the Yeongnam Region, and are valuable for understanding the development of the ancient tomb culture of the Silla Dynasty which spread to the lower reaches of the Nakdong River. Notably, Yangsan Bubuchong has side-entrance-type stone chamber tombs, a type of tomb that first appeared in the late fifth century and whose unique form distinguished it from preceding types of tombs. They were viewed as rare cases of ancient tombs associated with the custom of adding bodies to an existing tomb and the practice of sacrificial burial, with five individuals buried in one tomb and grave goods including gilt-bronze crowns, earthenware, and ironware, reflecting the high social status of the buried. Such view, however, was established without a basic examination of the burial structures or an in-depth research on the buried, i.e. whether they were buried together in one tomb, and which period the artifacts date from.
A comparative analysis of these materials with materials from other parts of the Yeongnam Region will shed light on the structures of the Yangsan Bubuchong tombs and the social status of their occupants. An erroneous analysis of the soil strata of the tombs led some researchers to interpret the human remains as additional burials of the wives, instead of as sacrifices. The misinterpretation also implied that the custom of sacrificial burial was maintained until the first quarter of the sixth century, whereas the custom was officially prohibited by the Silla Dynasty by then. Thus, the idea that the continued custom of sacrificial burial reflects Silla’s direct control over the region needs to be reconsidered.
Burial studies show that the inhabitants of present-day Yangsan were culturally pro-Silla but that they stuck to their traditional customs and accepted their traditional rulers’ authority - as shown by the burial process associated with the Yangsan Bubuchong tombs. This suggests that the local rulers still clung to their independence and that Silla had yet to exercise complete control over the Yangsan region. The traditional rulers of Yangsan were reduced to a provincial faction under Silla’s control and that the tomb site in Bukjeong-dong, Yangsan ceased to function as a cemetery for the local rulers from around the second quarter of the sixth century, given that no tombs dating from the era following the period in which the Yangsan Bubuchong tombs were built have been found at the site.
