조선 초 불경언해와 불자여성의 참여 (Buddhist Text Translation Project and the Participation of Woman Buddhist Practitioners in Early Joseon Korea)

초록

조선왕조는 정치적으로 불교를 억누르고 유교를 숭상하고자 노력했음에도 불구하고 한글 창제 이후 세종과 세조는 불경의 한글 번역을 활발히 전개했다. 특히 세조는 1461년 간경도감을 설치하고 불경의 국역과 판각에 큰 힘을 쏟아 부었다. 고려대장경은 기본적으로 중국 송나라의 한역대장경을 본받아 만들었기 때문에 일반 평범한 사람들은 읽을 수 없었다. 이에 반해 조선 초의 언해본 대장경은 평범한 일반 백성 대부분이 읽을 수 있었으므로 그 가치는 고려대장경에 비해 결코 뒤떨어지지 않는다고 볼 수 있지만 그 동안 주로 어학연구자 중심으로 연구가 이루어지고 있었다.
세종과 세조가 불경 한역에 관심을 갖게 된 결정적인 계기는 세종의 아내이자 세조의 어머니인 소헌왕후의 죽음 때문이었다. 두 사람은 그녀가 죽어서 극락왕생하기를 바라는 마음을 갖고 있었으나 당시 여성들이 어려운한문 불경을 알기 어려우므로 그녀의 극락왕생을 돕기 위해서 어려운 한문으로 된 불경보다는 쉬운 한글로 된 불경을 들려주어 극락왕생하기를 바랐다. 수년 후 세조는 또 하나의 큰 슬픔을 겪게 되는데 그것은 바로 자신의큰 아들의 죽음이었다. 세조는 자신도 슬펐지만 자신의 아내와 며느리가 느낄 슬픔과 회한에 대해서도 동정심을 느꼈다. 이에 그는 자신의 부모와 자식을 넘어 지식수준이 낮은 평범한 사람들을 돕기 위해 불경 언해 사업을활발히 펼쳤다.
간경도감에서 번역했던 한역 불경 가운데 『능엄경언해』와 『금강경언해』 의 판본 중에는 서문과 발문 번역에 참여한 인물과 번역 과정에 대한 설명이 들어있는 판본이 있으며, 그 안에는 여성 참여자의 이름이 나온다. 그동안 불경 언해 작업에 여성이 참여했다는 점에 관심을 기울인 연구를 찾아볼 수 없었다. 필자는 『능엄경』 한글 번역에 두 명 이상의 여성이 참여하고 『금강경』 한글 번역에 모두 9명의 여성이 참여한 것을 발견하고 그 의의를 살펴보고자 한다. 조선시대 간경도감에서 불경의 한글 번역 과정은 대략 위의 두 사례와 유사한 절차를 거쳤을 것이다. 세계적으로 볼 때 전통시대에 불경의 번역에 여성이 참여한 사례는 찾기 어려운 만큼 조선 초 불경 언해 작업에서 여성의 참여는 매우 가치 있는 일이라고 생각한다.

영어초록

Although the Joseon Dynasty has long been known for its official policy of suppressing Buddhism while promoting Confucianism, after the creation of the Korean alphabet (Hunminjeongeum 訓民正音) in 1443, Kings Sejong and Sejo actively sponsored translation of Buddhist scriptures into vernacular Korean. In particular, King Sejo installed the Directorate of Buddhist Publications (Gangyeongdogam 刊 經都監) in 1461 and concentrated efforts on state-sponsored translation projects and engraving of Buddhist scriptures. Since the Tripitaka Koreana was technically an abridged version of the Chinese Tripitaka created in the Song period, it was written in literary Chinese and thus ordinary people were not able to read it. On the other hand, the Hangeul Buddhist scriptures, a vernacular Korean version created in the early Joseon period, was legible to most of the commoners. For this reason, its value vis - à - vis that of the Great Tripitaka Koreana should not be underestimated to any extent. And yet it has hitherto received very little, if any, scholarly attention.
Now, one question that arises is why Kings Sejong and Sejo sponsoredtranslating of the Buddhist scriptures using the Korean alphabet? The most popular answer to this question remains to be that King Sejong, out of love and care for his people, had done so. Although this may not count as a wrong answer, it falls short for a proper one due to its vague and abstract nature. My research reveals that the death of Queen Soheon, the wife of King Sejong and mother of King Sejo was the main reason why the two kings became interested in translating Buddhist scriptures into vernacular Korean; the two His Majesties wished for her rebirth in paradise after her death. Yet it was never an easy task for women to comprehend the contents of Buddhist scriptures written in literary Chinese. Thus, by reading out loud the vernacular Korean version of the Buddhist sutras for her, they believed that it would alleviate all her suffering and help her find solace in the afterlife. Later, King Sejo had another traumatic experience; this time, it was the untimely death of his beloved, eldest son. This, of course, deeply saddened him, but he soon realized that his wife and daughter - in - law were both mourning and lamenting much more deeply than he himself was and thus felt great pity for them. As a result, he embarked on a state project designed to translate Buddhist scriptures into vernacular Korean to make their contents comprehensible for commoners with no knowledge of literary Chinese.
Among the Buddhist scriptures translated into vernacular Korean at the Directorate of Buddhist Publications during the early Joseon dynasty period, the preface and introductory texts of 『Nungeomgyeongeonhae』 and 『Geumganggyeongeonhae』 provide introductions to people who participated in the translation project. There has hitherto been no scholarship indicating the existence of women among those who participated in the state - sponsored translation enterprise. My study reveals that there were more than two women who participated in the Korean translationof the 『Nungeom Sutra』 and nine women in the 『Geumganggyeong』 translation project. It is likely that the Buddhist scriptures translated into vernacular Korean at the Directorate of Buddhist Publications during the Joseon period would have undergone more or less identical process as in the two cases discussed above. To the best of my knowledge, no other cases of woman participation in state - sponsored Buddhist scripture translation project were found in any other premodern state.
