국채보상운동 과정에서 공동체의식의 심화와 유교적 에토스의 영향 (A Deepening Sense of Community and Influences from the Confucian Ethos during the National Debt Redemption Movement)

초록

최근 미국과 국내의 학계에서 고려 혹은 조선시대에 민족적 정체성이 형성되었을 가능성을 제기하는 연구가 늘어나고 있다. 이들 연구는 전근대 한국사회에서 세계적으로 유례없는 문화적 동질성이 형성되었다는 점, 임진란 당시 의병장들과 같이 관직 없는 유림들조차 나라 일에 헌신적 태도를 보였다는 점에 주목한다. 반면 민족 형성을 위해서는 지역, 신분, 젠더의 경계를 넘는 동료애가 필요하다는 점은 간과하고 있다. 본 논문은 1907년 국채보상운동을 통해 한국 사회에서 지역, 젠더, 계층을 넘는 수평적 동료의식이 형성되었다고 본다는 점에서 위의 연구들과 결을 달리한다. 다만 동료의식을 촉진한 것이 의리 관념과 같은 유교적 에토스였음을 강조한다는 점에서는 유교 문화가 민족적 정체성의 토양이 될 수 있다고 믿는 위의 연구들과 문제의식을 공유한다. 본고에서는 국채보상운동 과정에서 다양한 지역, 젠더, 계층의 인민들이 운동에 동참하고 있음이 알려지면서 점차 이를 의로운 일로 평가하는 경향이 강해졌다는 점, 또한 각지, 각계의 참여 양상을 지켜보던 이들 역시 운동에 동참할 것을 공개적으로 선언하여 자신들도 같은 의리를 실천하려는 주체임을 인정받으려 했다는 점 등에 유의하는 가운데 한국 민족주의와 유교 전통의 관계를 해명하고자 한다.

영어초록

Recently there have been suggestions from both U.S. and Korean academiccircles, that the national identity of the Korean people may have been forgedduring the Goryeo or Joseon dynasty period. These studies have taken noticeof an unusual sense of cultural homogeniety that we can spot from the premodernperiod (a rather unprecedented level of it, even considering other countries’cases on the global stage), and they also highlighted the actions of theConfucian scholars for example, the Scholars-turned-Righteous Army leaders) whohad absolutely no ties with the government yet were just as strongly devoted tothe task of overcoming a dynastic crisis as the governmental officials were.
However, these studies have somewhat ignored the simple fact that in order fora nation to be formed, an affection for its partners, peers and colleagues thatgo beyond regions, social classes and genders, should be set in place first.
This article differs from previous efforts and especially the aforementionedstudies, as it sees the National Debt Redemption Movement in 1907 as an eventthat served as a virtual platform for the Koreans to build a horizontal partnership,which could evolve beyond issues such as regions, genders and classesand eventually lead into a Nationalist stand. At the same time, this article alsorecognizes the possibility that the Confucian ethos -such as the concept ofrighteousness- could have been contributive to the promotion of this new senseof partnership, and in that regard this article does share the belief of otherstudies that Confucian culture may have served as a soil for the Koreans’Nationalistic identity.
In that regard, this article aims to define the relationship between KoreanNationalism and Confucian traditions, by examining the fact that more andmore people came to consider the National Debt Redemption Movement as the‘right thing to do’ after learning all kinds of people from various backgrounds-regions, genders and social classes, etc.- were joining it, and the fact that theytoo wanted to be recognized as people joining the righteous effort, by publiclydeclaring their participation in the movement.
