초록

이 글은 근대 전환기의 국한문체의 형성 과정과 이 시기에 본격적으로 간행되는 자전, 사전, 학습서의 편찬이 어떤 관련을 맺고 있는지를 살피려 한것이다. 국한문체가 한자의 사용 정도, 한자의 난도, 한문 문법의 반영 정도등에 따라 어려움이 있다고 보는 것에 비해 국문체는 별 어려움이 없으리라생각되지만 실상은 그렇지 않다. 국문체는 분철, 연철, 중철의 문제를 해결하고, 음운 현상 관련 표기, 한자음 표기, 조사와 어미의 표기 등에 관하여 해결해야 할 것이 많았는데, 이에 도움을 줄 규범과 참고서가 마땅치 않았다.
이에 반해서 국한문체는 한자의 자형, 국문으로 표기된 부분의 표기, 한자음병기 시의 한자음 문제 등을 제외하고는 상대적으로 어려움이 적었다. 이런 점은 근대적 교육, 신학문, 신논설 등에서 국문체와 국한문체의 경쟁에서 상대적으로 국한문체가 유리한 위치에 서게 된 하나의 요인이 되었다. 이런현실에서 서양인들이 편찬한 이중어 사전에는 당시 조선어의 표기법과 관련한 어려움이 잘 드러나 있다. 조선어 학습과 성서 번역 등을 위해서는 참고자료로서 이중어 사전 편찬이 꼭 요구되었던 현실에서 이중어 사전 편찬은표기의 결정, 뜻풀이의 제시, 한자 음훈의 제시 등이 복합된 고된 작업이었다. 게일의 『한영뎐』(1897)은 이를 가장 잘 보여 준다. 국한문체를 원활하게 구사하기 위해서는 한자, 한자의 음과 훈, 국문 표기 등에 관한 종합적인지식이 요구되었다. 이에 도움을 줄 자전 편찬이 요구되었던바, 지석영 등은『자전석요』처럼 현실 한자음을 제시하고 여러 국문 뜻풀이를 반영한 자전을편찬하고, 『언문』과 같은 한자어 학습서를 편찬하여 국한문 시대에 효과적으로 대처하게 하고, 『아학편』과 같이 한자와 외국어 학습을 할 수 있는 학습서를 만들어 국한문 시대에 대응하려 하였다. 이런 자전 및 학습서의 편찬은결과적으로 신사상. 신문물, 신학문의 수용, 소개, 유통 등에 국한문체가 효과적인 문체로 구실하는 것과의 관련이 높은 것으로 생각된다.

This article tries to examine the relationship between the formation process of the Korean-Chinese-language mixed style in the period of the modern transition and the compilation of Chinese-character dictionaries, bilingual dictionaries and study books published in earnest during this period. It is often thought that the pure Korean style will have little difficulty, compared to the Korean-Chinese-language mixed style, which is difficult to use, the difficulty of Chinese characters, and the degree of reflection of Chinese grammar. But that's not the case.In the pure Korean style, there was much to be done to solve the problems of Buncheol, Yeoncheol and mixture of Buncheol and Yeoncheo related to phonological phenomena and Sino-Korean, but the norms and reference books to help them were not appropriate. On the other hand, in the Korean-Chinese-language mixed style, the difficulty was relatively less, except for the shape of the Chinese character, the writing of the parts marked in the Korean alphabet, and the problems of Chinese consonants in the Chinese character. This was one factor that led to the relatively favorable position of the Korean-Chinese-language mixed style in the competition between pure Korean style and the Korean-Chinese-language mixed style. Due to the difficulties of this reality, the Westerner's bilingual dictionaries illustrates the difficulties associated with the Korean writing system at that time. In a reality where a bilingual dictionary compilation was essential for learning Korean and translating biblical texts, the compilation of a double-language dictionary was a combination of decision of writing, problem of meaning solving, and presentation of Chinese characters. Gale's Korean-English dictionary (1897) shows this best. A comprehensive knowledge of Chinese characters, the notes and meanings of Chinese characters, and the writing of Korean characters was required in order to be able to write the Korean-Chinese-language mixed style smoothly. A dictionary of Chinese characters was required to help. That is why such as Ji Seok-yeong Jajeonseogyo like a dictionary compiling, reflect realistic Sino-Korean and the meaning of Chinese characters that written by Korean Language. They also compiled Chinese language study books such as Eonmun to effectively cope with the era of the meaning of Chinese characters. And they tried to cope with the era of the Korean-Chinese-language mixed style by creating a study book that allows them to learn Chinese characters and foreign languages, such as Ahakpyeon. As a result, the compilation of Chinese characters dictionaries and study books is thought to be highly relevant to the effective style of limited writing in introducing and accepting new ideas, new culture, new learning, and distribution, etc.
