<수매청심록>의 창작 방식과 의도 (A study on method of creating Sumaecheongsimrok and its meaning)

초록

본고는 <수매청심록>의 창작 방식의 특징과 그 의도를 살핀 것이다. <수매청심록>은 여타의 통속적 애정소설류와 구조적 동질성을 지니면서도 인물의 성격과 갈등 상황 등에서 매우 독특한 면모를 보이는 작품이다. 유형화되어 있는 대개의 애정소설과 달리 인물의 형상, 사건의 전개 등에서 보이는 이 작품의 특징적 면모가 어디에서 기인한 것인지를 고찰하기 위해 본고에서는 작품의 창작 방식과 작자의 의도를 구체적으로 논의하였다.
논의의 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 우선 이 작품의 題名과 관련하여 기존 논의에서 수정되어야 할 점에 대해 논의하였다. <수매청심록>(필사본)은 <권용선전>(활자본)의 이본으로 소개되곤 했으나 활자본은 필사본을 대본으로 번안에 가까운 변개를 한 것이다. 선행하는 필사본 이본들에서 압도적으로 많이 보이는 제명이 “슈쳥심녹”이므로 이 이본군의 대표 작품명은 <수매청심록>이 되어야 한다.
다음 창작 방식과 의도를 해명하기 위해 작품의 수용과 변용의 측면을 논의하였다. <수매청심록>은 <윤지경전>의 주요 서사구조와 인물 배치 등을 적극 수용하면서도 세부적인 서사 전개나 인물 형상화에서는 통속적 흥미를 제고하는 방향으로 변용을 시도한 작품이다. <수매청심록>이 남주인공의 지고지순한 애정 추구에 초점을 둔 것, 忠보다 애정을 우선적인 가치로 여기는 것, 이미 혼례를 올린 남녀 주인공이 이별과 재회를 반복하는 것 등은 원작인 <윤지경전>의 서사적 틀을 수용하고 있기 때문이다. 반면 전경화되어 있는 역사적 사건의 소거, 소설적 흥미를 유발하는 다양한 화소의 배치 등은 통속적 애정소설을 향유한 당대 독자층의 취향이 반영되면서 나타난 결과이다. 특히 이상적인 영웅호걸과 요조숙녀의 만남이라는 통속적 설정을 통해 당대 독자층의 욕망을 반영하고 있으며, 이들의 결연을 계속적으로 지연시키는 통속적 애정 서사의 확대, 여주인공의 고난 부각 등을 통해 조선후기 통속소설의 서사문법에 익숙해져 있는 향유층의 성향에 적절히 부응하고 있다.
고소설 창작에서 ‘수용’과 ‘변용’은 일반적인 것일 수도 있지만, <수매청심록> 작가가 보여준 수용과 변용은 원작에 대한 ‘문학적 대응’의 성격을 지닌다. 본고의 논의를 통해 조선후기 소설 창작과 향유에 대한 연구가 좀 더 다층적으로 이루어지길 기대한다.

영어초록

This paper is to examine the characteristics of the creative writing method and intent of Sumaecheongsimrok. Sumaecheongsimrok has structural homogeneity with other conventional romantic stories but shows very distinctive aspects in personality of characters and conflicting circumstances. In this paper, the methods of creative writing of the literary work and the intent of the writer were concretely discussed in order to examine what causes the distinctive aspects of this literary work shown in the figuration of characters and the development of affairs, unlike most of romantic stories that are patternized.
The results of the discussion are summarized as follows. First, what should be corrected in the existing discussions in relation to the title of the work was discussed. Sumaecheongsimrok(the hand―writing book) was often introduced as the different version of Gwonyongseonjeon(the printed book) but the printed book is the alteration close to adaptation of the hand―writing book as the script. Overwhelmingly many titles among the preceding different versions of the hand―writing book are “슈쳥심녹”, so the representative title of different version group of the literary work should be Sumaecheongsimrok.
Next, in order to explain the method of creative writing and the intent, the aspects of acceptance and transformation of this work were discussed. Sumaecheongsimrok is the literary work which actively accepts major narrative structure arrangement of characters of Yunjigyeongjeon but attempts to transform it in the direction of popular interest in the development of detailed narration and figuration of characters. It is because Sumaecheongsimrok accepts the narrative framework of the original Yunjigyeongjeon that the hero of Sumaecheongsimrok focuses on pursuing very noble and pure love, and considers love as preferential value over loyalty, and that the hero and heroine who have been married repeat farewell and reunion. On the other hand, the elimination of foregrounding historical events and arrangement of diverse story units that arouse romantic interest are the results of reflecting the taste of class of readers enjoying popular romance stories at that time.
It was discussed that particularly, the character figuration of man and woman protagonists idealized as a hero and a graceful lady, the expansion of romantic narration that delays their union, and highlighting the suffering of the heroine are related to the reading custom and view of value of the reader class at that time.
Although ‘acceptance’ and ‘transformation’ in writing ancient novels can be common, the acceptance and transformation that the writer of Sumaecheongsimrok shows are characterized as ‘literary respondence.’ Through the discussion of this paper, I hope that researches on creative writing of novels in the late Joseon Dinasty can be made on a more multi―layer basis.
