청소년소설 침체 양상 연구 - 청소년소설가를 중심으로 (A Study on the Stagnation of Adolescent Novels - Focusing on Adolescent Novel Writers)

초록

2000년대 중후반 『완득이』를 기점으로 청소년소설에 대한 관심과 기대는 증가했다. 그러나 10여 년이 지난 지금, 청소년소설의 출판은 크게 줄어들고 있다. 또, 청소년소설의 성공적인 사례도 여전히 『완득이』에 머물고 있다.
청소년소설의 위축은 청소년소설가의 탄생 때부터 내재된 문제이다. 유력 출판사들은 청소년소설의 확장을 위해 청소년문학상 공모전을 시작했다. 청소년소설가는 청소년문학상을 통해 만들어졌고, 2000년대 중후반 단행본이 있는 실재하는 ‘소설가’가 되었다. 그러나 김려령, 구병모, 정유정의 사례에서 청소년소설가가 일반소설로 이탈하는 경향이 발견된다. 청소년문학상을 받은 대표적인 초기 청소년소설가들이 일반소설에 더 집중하거나, 이들이 쓴 청소년소설이 청소년소설이 아닌 것처럼 출판되는 현상은 청소년소설 장르 자체의 문제이다. 본고는 이 문제를 연구와 비평을 통해 우회적으로 살펴보았다. 청소년문학상이 제정되기 이전부터, 청소년소설은 정말 청소년이 읽을 문학적 가치가 있는가에 대한 질문을 받아왔다. 이 질문은 지금까지도 반복해서 청소년소설의 문학성 문제로 지적된다. 청소년소설이 문학성을 가져야 한다는 점은 자명하다. 그런데 이 문학성이 일반소설의 문학성과 동일한 것이라면, 문학성이 있는 소설일수록 일반소설로 발표되는 것이 더 유리하다. 청소년소설은 일반소설의 하위 리그처럼 존재하고 있다. 청소년소설은 청소년을 독자로 전제하고 있는 것을 제외하면 일반소설과 구별되는 정체성이 부재한 상태이다. 청소년소설이 침체되는 양상을 띠게 되는 것은 이 때문이다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해 청소년소설은 일반소설과는 구별되는 ‘청소년소설됨’의 요건을 모색해야 하며 이는 추후 과제로 남겨둔다.

영어초록

In the mid to late 2000s, when the literary scene was punctuated by Wandeugi, the public’s interest and expectations for young adult novels increased. However, after more than a decade, the publication of young adult novels is now shrinking dramatically. In addition, after the success of Wandeugi, there have been no notable cases of success in terms of young adult novels.
The stagnation of young adult novels is a problem inherent in the birth of young adult novel writers. Leading publishers launched young adult literature awards in order to expand the genre. The awards could spotlight new writers, and in the mid and late 2000s, these winners became actual “novelists” with published books. However, it has been found that there is a tendency for young adult novel writers to turn their eye to writing general novels, as in the cases of Kim Ryeo-ryeong, Gu Byeong-mo, and Jung Yoo-jung. It is the problem of the genre itself that representative writers, who received the young adult literature awards, focus more on general novels, or that the novels written by them are not published as young adult novels. This study explores these issues through research and criticism. Even before the young adult literature awards were established, there had been questions as to whether they have actual literary value. And even now this is repeatedly pointed out as the literary problem of the genre. It is clear that young adult novels themselves should have literary value; however, if their value is the same as that of general novels, what is evident is it would be more advantageous for young adult novels with greater literary value to be published as general novels. Young adult novels are generally perceived as a sub-category of general novels. They have no particularly distinct characteristics that distinguish them from general novels, other than the fact that they target teenagers as readers. This is the reason why there has been stagnation in publication of young adult novels. In order to solve this problem, the genre should seek requirements for “the identity of young adult novels,” which will then differentiate them from general novels, and that is left as a future task.
