『대악후보』정읍과 수제천의 관련성 고찰 (Study on the Relation between Jeongeup in Daeakhubo and Sujechen)

초록

본 논문은 ‘수제천(빗가락 정읍)’과 『대악후보』 ‘정읍’의 관계를 구명 하였다. 아악의 백미로 알려진 수제천의 원명은 ‘정읍(井邑)’이다. 이 ‘빗가락 정읍’과 『대악후보』‘정읍’ 의 관계에 대해서는 일찍이 여러 학자들에 의해 연구되었지만 미해(未解)의 입장을 비롯해 별도의 곡의 구전(口傳), 혹은 악구의 재구성 등으로 결론은 한결 같지 않았다. 본고는 선행 연구의 결과 를 존중하면서 미진한 부분에 대해 보완하고자 방법을 달리 하여 두 곡의 관련성을 고찰하고자 하였다. 기존의 선행 연구에서는 분석 대상으로 피리보를 사용한 반면 본 논문은 아악부 대금보를 채택하였으며, 악구(樂句) 대신에 구조선율을 중심으로 분석하였다. 음악 구성의 가장 작은 단위 인 동기(모티브)로 현행 수제천을 악곡에 출현하는 순서대로 분석한 결과 수제천은 1~4장을 이루 고 있는 동기는 25종이며, 구조선율을 연결해 주는 음간 연결음 5종은 『대악후보』에 나타나지 않는 것으로 정리할 수 있었다. 구조선율을 기준으로 보면 두 곡이 상당 부분 일치하므로 음 진행의 유사성이 많은 관계로 동일 계통의 음악으로 보는 데는 무리가 없다. 두 곡의 유사성 내지 동일한 점은 다음의 네 가지로 요약할 수 있다. 첫째, 수제천의 한 각 장단이 반각 장단으로 축소되는 것은 정읍의 8행 장단(또는 고형)이 4행 장단(고형)으로 축소되는 것과 관계있다. 둘째, 『대악후보』정읍은 큰 틀에서 보면 1장의 선율이 2장에서 반복되는 형태로 2장으로 구성된 악곡이다. 이는 수제천에서 1장이 반복되어 2장이 되는 것과 유사한 형태라고 할 수 있다. 셋째, 『대악후보』 정읍의 1소행은 현악, 2소행은 관악으로 해석하는 것이 통상적이다. 현재의 수제천과 비교해본 결과 제1소행인 현악 선율이 수제천의 관악 선율로 재창조 된 것으로 볼 수 있다. 넷째, 수제천 제1․2장의 주선율을 구성하고 있는 모티브는 정읍의 출현 순으로 보면, 제1, 35, 36, 22, 5, 6, 28, 30, 28, 10, 7행 순서와 비교되고, 3․4장의 주선율 요소들은 제53, 54, 35, 36, 45, 40, 37, 39, 46, 42, 30, 44행순으로 구성음이 일치하고 있다. 이상의 공통점을 종합해 보건대, 두 곡은 구조선율 측면에서 상당한 유사성이 발견되나 선율 진행 면에서는 상이하여 동일곡이라고 보기는 어렵다. 그럼에도 동일계 음악이라고 판단할 수 있는 까닭에 『대악후보』정읍을 1세대의 곡, 현행 수제천(빗가락 정읍)을 2세대의 곡으로 결론지 을 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper is to explore 'Bitgarak Jeongeup' and 'Jeongeup' from Daeakhubo (Scores of Great Music) to investigate their corelation including an association of their lyrics Jeongeupsa (a song from the Baekjje era) with a place name, 'Jeongeup' located in Jeollabuk-do. The original title for Sujecheon (Long Life as Eternal as in Heaven) which is known as the gem of Aak (court ceremonial music) is 'Bitgarak Jeongeup'. Although there are many precedent studies on the corelation between 'Bitgark Jeongeup' and 'Jeongeup' from Daeakhubo, they have never been led up to the same conclusions: some suggest that one of them is a independent version of the other, others suggest that one of them is the one orally transmitted or reconstituted of the existing phrases, while some were inconclusive. This paper is aimed at investigating into the corelation between the two musical pieces by different method to complement the precedent study results with respect. Instead of the piri (cylindrical double-reed bamboo oboe) score analyzed in the precedent studies, I chose to analyze the daegeum (large transverse flute) score focusing on motives instead of phrases. Analyzing the existing Sujechen by its motive which is the smallest constituent of music in the order of appearance, the study found out that there are 25 types of motives constituting the first through fourth movement, and the five types of tones connecting the motives do not appear in Daeakhubo. Although much of the motives were consistent in both pieces, it is difficult to predicate that they are identical since they have different time value. However, it is not unreasonable to consider them cognate as they have a lot in common in progress. The similarity or identical points can be summarized as the following: First, the origin of its rhythmic units, gak (6-beat, a quarter rhythmic cycle) and half-gak (3-beat) of Sujecheon can be found in the hour-glass drum rhythm of Jeongeup, which was 8 lines being reduced to 4 lines. Second, Jeongeup, in larger scheme, is comprised of two movements in which the melody of the first movement repeats in the second movement. This form is similar to Sujecheon. Third, the first vertical line of Jeongeup is typically considered as for string instruments, while the second one as for wind instruments. The string melody of Jeongeup can be understood in the same context as the wind melody of today's Sujecheon. The difference is that Jeongeup has the nam key (C) for the keynote and cadence while Sujecheon begins with the nam key but has the lim key (B♭) for cadence. Fourth, the motives of the main melody in the first and second movement of Sujecheon correspond to line 1, 35, 36, 22, 5, 6, 28, 30, 28, 10, 7 of Jeongeup in the order of appearance, while those in the third and fourth movement correspond to line 53, 54, 35, 36, 45, 40, 45, 37, 46, 42, 30, 44. Collectively, there are considerable similarities in terms of their motives but it is difficult to regard them the same musical piece in terms of their melodies. Nevertheless, they are still concluded as cognate music that Jeongeup from Daeakhubo can be determined as the piece of first generation while Bitgarak Jeongeup as of the second generation. There was a view on Sujecheon being the production of the Silla Dynasty due to an issue raised from a comparative study on Jeongeup and Sujecheon. Considering the relation to a place name 'Jeongeup', however, such claim admits of a discussion. Particularly, among divergent opinions in interpretation of their lyrics: some regard it as a complete hugang, a musical tone, while the others regard it as hugang-Jeongju market, I consider it resonable to follow the latter.
