초록

<천수석>은 당말오대라는 역사적 배경을 활용하면서도 비극적 현실 인식을 드러낸다는 점에서, 국문장편소설 중 특이한 작품으로 일컬어져 왔다. 당 말기라는 시대적 배경을 차용한 작품이 드물기도 하지만, 가문 번영에 중점을 두는 여타의 국문장편소설과 달리 <천수석>은 국가와 가문의 쇠락을 담고 있기 때문이다. 본고는 이러한 특수성에 초점을 맞추어, <천수석>에 나타난 국가의 존망과 가문의 존재 양상에 대해 살펴보았다.
<천수석>은 실존 인물인 위보형과 위부를 중심으로, 국가와 명운을 함께하게 된 가문이 번영하였다가 쇠락하는 과정을 담고 있다. 처사 가문이었던 위부가 공주혼을 통해 당 왕실과 운명을 함께하고, 당이 멸망하자 다시 처사 가문으로 돌아가는 구조를 구축하는 것이다. 그리고 이러한 와중에 작품은 이극용과 동창공주를 적극적으로 활용함으로써, 위부의 명맥을 계승하고 당과 후당의 연결성 또한 확보한다. 이는 난세에 가문이 어떻게 생존할 수 있을 것인가에 대한 문제의식과 함께, 거시적인 역사를 문학적 범주에서 새롭게 이해하기 위한 시도라 할 수 있다.
이러한 <천수석>의 지향은 대내적으로는 가문의 생존에 대한 문제의식을 강조하고, 대외적으로는 국문장편소설과 역사적 배경의 관계를 성찰하게 한다는 점에서 문제적이다. 상당수의 국문장편소설이 역사를 시공간적 배경으로 활용하면서도 가상의 역사에 머물거나 역사적 사건을 주변화시키는 것과 달리, <천수석>은 시대 배경이 작품을 좌우하며 전체적인 스토리를 이끌어나간다. 때로는 허구와 사실의 경계를 넘나들며, 국가의 멸망이라는 큰 사건을 한 가문의 입장에서 생생하게 묘사하는 것이다. 이는 작품이 스스로 역사의 빈 공간을 상상하고, 국가가 멸망할 때 가문이 어떤 선택을 할 수 있을 것인가에 대한 서사 실험이라 할 수 있다. 이런 점에서 <천수석>은 가문의 존속 방법에 대한 문제의식은 물론, 고소설에서의 역사 활용 방식을 검토하는 데 있어 유의미한 작품이라 할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

Cheonsuseok is a work that reveals a tragic perception of reality while utilizing the special historical background of the late Tang Dynasty, and has been referred to as an unusual work among Korean classical novels. Although it is rare to borrow the background of the period at the end of the year, unlike other Korean classical novels centered on the prosperity of the family, Cheonsuseok contains the decline of the state and family. Therefore, this paper focused on this specificity and examined the existence of the state and the family in Cheonsuseok.
Cheonsuseok. is about the process of prosperity and decline of the family who joined the nation and fate, centering on the real characters, Wi Bo-hyung and Wi family. It is to establish a structure in which Wi family, who was a retired family, shares fate with the Tang royal family through marriage with Princess Dongchang, preserves his reputation through the Later Party when the party collapsed, and returns to the retired family. And in the midst of this, the work actively utilizes Lee Kuk-yong and Princess Dongchang, inheriting the prestige of the stomach, while also securing the connection between the Tang Dynasty and the later Tang Dynasty. This shows the awareness of how the family can survive in difficult times at the family level, and it can be said that it reveals an attempt to newly understand macroscopic history in the literary category at the national level. It can be seen as the result of literary imagination to understand the macroscopic flow of history through the changes experienced by a family.
This orientation of Cheonsuseok is problematic in that it internally emphasizes the sense of problem with the family's survival method and externally reflects on the relationship between Korean classical novels and historical backgrounds. Unlike staying in "virtual history" or marginalizing historical events while using the past in which a considerable number of Korean classical novels exist, Cheonsuseok leads the overall story as the background of the times influences the work. Sometimes crossing the boundaries between fiction and facts, vividly describing the great event of the collapse of the state from the standpoint of a family. This can be said to be an experimental narrative about the work imagining the empty space of history on its own and what choices the family can make when the state collapses. In this respect, Cheonsuseok can be said to be a significant work in the history of novels in reviewing the way history is used within the complaint theory as well as the problem consciousness of the family's survival method.
