한국 생태그림책의 발전 양상과 의의 (The Development and Significance of Ecological Picture Books in Korea)

초록

본 연구에서는 1990년 이후 발간된 생태그림책의 발전 양상을 살피고, 생태비평적 측면에서 분석하여 그 의의와 문제점을 논의하고 향후 생태그림책의 방향성을 제시하였다. 한국에 생태그림책이 등장하기 시작한 것은 1990년대 전반기 무렵이다. 초기 생태그림책들은 꽃, 풀, 물고기, 그리고 곤충과 같은 자연에 대한 상세한 그림을 보여준다. 대부분의 책은 사실을 진실하고 아름답게 기술했고, 삶의 성장 과정에 대한 정확한 정보를 제공함으로써 아이들에게 자연 친화적인 태도를 발전시켰지만, 자연과 인간의 관계에 대한 성찰은 나타나지 않았습니다. 1990년대 후반부터 자연과 함께 사는 사람들을 묘사하거나 멸종된 물고기와 동물들의 슬픔을 묘사한 그림책들이 다큐멘터리 형태로 출판되었다. 인간은 자연과 함께 살아야 한다는 메시지를 전했지만, 이야기는 아이들에게 어필할 만큼 재미있지 않았다.
환경문제의 심각성을 표현한 그림책이 등장하기 시작한 것은 2000년대 초반. 도시의 급속한 확장과 자연 오염 같은 사회적 문제를 비판하는 그림책이 등장했고, 자연을 꿈꾸는 도시인에 대한 그림책도 출판되었다. 이 책들은 독자들이 환경 문제에 대해 인식하고 생각할 수 있게 해주지만, 계몽성이 강하여 서사가 빈약한 문제점이 있었다.
2010년대에는 다양한 생태 그림책들이 출판되었으며, 이 시기에 출판된 생태 그림책의 세 가지 경향을 확인할 수 있다. 먼저, 그림책들은 인간의 탐욕이 자연을 파괴했다고 비난한다: 결국 인간을 추방하고마는 플라스틱으로 뒤덮인 섬, 강물에 살던 조류는 인간을 떠나게 하고, 환경을 오염시키는 사람들은 그들이 전 세계 생태계를 파괴할 것이라고 경고한다. 두 번째는 동물 권리를 주제로 한 그림책이다. 세 번째, 최근의 생태 그림책은 환경 파괴를 보고하는 것뿐만 아니라 파괴된 자연 환경을 복원하고 자연과 인간의 평화로운 공존을 모색하는 것을 목표로 하고 있다.
한국의 생태그림책이 한 단계 도약하기 위해서는 자연과 조화를 이루는 인간의 삶을 추구하는 생태이념에 충실한 작품을 제작해야 하며, 사람들과 자연 사이의 활동과 조화를 보여줌으로써 자연을 복원하는 이미지를 제시해야 한다. 그림책 작가들이 명심해야 할 또 다른 과제는 생태문학의 개념을 폭넓게 인식하여 장애인, 노인, 어린이, 여성, 외국인을 포용하는 비전을 제시할 수 있도록 해야 한다는 것이다. 마지막으로 생태적 그림책이 독자들에게 좋은 평가를 받기 위해서는 작가들이 생태적 이념과 예술성, 흥미성이 조화를 이룰 수 있는 그림책을 창작해야 한다.

영어초록

In this study, recent ecological picture books published since 1990 were analyzed in terms of ecological criticism, its significance and problems were discussed, and the direction of future ecological picture books. Ecological picture books began to appear in Korea around the first half of the 1990s. Early ecological picture books show detailed pictures of nature, such as flowers, grass, fish, and insects. Most books described facts truthfully and beautifully. It developed a nature-friendly attitude to children by providing accurate information on the process of life's growth, without the appearance of the relationship between nature and humans. Since the late 1990s, picture books depicting people living with nature or the sentimental sadness of extinct fish and animals have been published in documentary form. It conveyed the message that humans should live with nature, but the story was not interesting enough to appeal to children.
Picture books expressing the seriousness of environmental degradation began to appear in the early 2000s. Picture books criticizing social problems such as the rapid expansion of the city and natural pollution have emerged, and picture books about urban people dreaming of nature have also been published. These books allowed readers to recognize and consider environmental problems, but there was a narrative problem due to its strong enlightenment.
In the 2010s, various ecological picture books were published, and three trends in ecological picture books published during this period can be identified. First, picture books accuse human greed of destroying nature: plastic-covered islands that eventually expel humans, algae that live in rivers leave humans, and environmental polluters warning that they will destroy ecosystems around the world. The second is a picture book on animal rights. Third, recent ecological picture books aim not only to report environmental destruction, but also to restore the destroyed natural environment and seek peaceful coexistence between nature and humans.
For Korean ecological picture books to take a leap forward, they must produce works faithful to the ecological ideology of pursuing human life in harmony with nature, and present images of restoring nature by showing activities and harmony between people and nature. Another task that picture book writers should keep in mind is to recognize the concept of ecological literature so that they can present a vision that embraces and allow readers to also recognise the disabled, the elderly, children, women, and foreigners. Finally, for ecological picture books to be well received by readers, writers must create picture books that can harmonize ecological ideology, artistry, and interest.
