조선후기 서울 지역 비구니사찰의 분포와 특징 (Distribution and Characteristics of Bhikkhuni Temples in Seoul during the Late Joseon Period)

초록

이 논문은 조선후기의 비구니 426명의 명단을 토대로 서울 지역 비구니사찰의 분포와 특징을 고찰한 연구이다. 조선후기 서울 지역에서 활동한 니승 426명의 활동사찰은 총 8개로, 옥수동 미타사 234명, 보문동 미타사 12명, 보문사 85명, 봉은사 37명, 청량사 27명, 청룡사 14명, 수국사 9명, 진관사 7명, 흥천사 1명이다. 이들의 명단을 비교 분석해 본 결과 독자적인 비구니사찰로 운영된 사찰은 옥수동 미타사와 보문동 미타사, 보문사, 청량사, 청룡사 등 총 5곳이며, 진관사 향적암은 진관사 내에서 독자적인 비구니암자로 운영되었던 것으로 추정된다.
조선후기 서울 지역 비구니사찰의 특징은 총 네 가지로 정리할 수 있는데, 첫째, 조선후기 서울 지역의 비구니사찰들은 왕실과 상당히 밀접한 관계를 맺고 있었다. 둘째, 조선후기 서울의 비구니들은 금강산과 지속적인 교류를 맺어왔으며, 근현대까지 금강산의 수행 전통을 계승했음을 표방해 오고 있다. 셋째 ,조선후기 비구니들의 활동은 도성 밖 4승방으로 알려져 있는 두뭇개승방, 새절승방, 탑골승방, 돌곶이승방에 집중돼 있다. 두뭇개승방은 오늘날 옥수동 미타사로, 새절승방은 청룡사로, 탑골승방은 보문동 미타사와 보문사로, 돌곶이승방은 청량사로 계승되고 있다. 넷째, 서울 지역 비구니사찰은 18~19세기부터 독자적인 승가공동체를 유지하고 있었다. 사료의 한계로 17세기 이전의 사찰 운영 실태를 파악하기는 힘들지만 적어도 18세기경에 이르면 비구니들의 독자적인 사찰 운영이 이루어졌음을 확인할 수 있다.

영어초록

This study examines the distribution and characteristics of bhikkhuni temples in Seoul based on a list of 426 bhikkhuni temples from the late Joseon period. There were eight active temples for the 426 bhikkhuni active in the Seoul area in the late Joseon period: 234 at the Mita Temple in Oksu-dong; 12 at the Mita Temple in Bomun-dong; 85 at the Bomun Temple; 37 at the Bongeun Temple; 27 at the Cheongnyang Temple; 14 at the Cheongryong Temple; nine at the Suguk Temple; seven at the Jingwan Temple, and one at the Heungcheon Temple. Comparison and analysis of this list revealed that five temples were operated as independent bhikkhuni temples, including the Mita Temple in Oksu-dong, Mita Temple in Bomun-dong, Bomun Temple, Cheongnyangsa Temple, and Cheongnyongsa Temple. The Jingwan Temple Hyanghyangam is presumed to have been operated as an independent bhikkhuni hermitage within the Jingwan Temple.
The characteristics of the bhikkhuni temples in the Seoul area in the late Joseon period can be divided in four categories. First, the bhikkhuni temples in the Seoul area in the late Joseon period had an intimate relationship with the royal family. Second, the bhikkhuni in Seoul during the late Joseon period had continuous exchanges with Mt. Geumgang, and claimed to have inherited Mt. Geumgang’s tradition of practice until modern times. Third, the activities of the bhikkhuni in the late Joseon period were concentrated in the four monasteries outside the capital: the Dumutgaeseungbang, Saejeolseungbang, Tapgolseungbang, and Dolgojiseungbang. Currently, the Dumutgaeseungbang is inherited as the Mita Temple in Oksu-dong, Saejeolseungbang is inherited as the Cheongnyong Temple, Tapgolseungbang is inherited as the Mita and Bomun Temple in Bomun-dong, and Dolgojiseungbang is inherited as the Cheongnyang Temple. Fourth, the bhikkhuni temples in the Seoul area maintained their own monastic communities from the 18th to 19th centuries. Although it is difficult to determine the actual status of temple operation before the 17th century because of scarcity of historical materials, it can be confirmed that Buddhist bhikkhuni independently operated the temple at least as early as the 18th century.
