한국과 스페인 추리소설의 서사화의 가능성: 『최후의 증인』 vs 『남쪽바다』 비교연구를 중심으로 (The Possibility of the Narrative of Korean and Spanish Detective stories: A Comparative Study on The Last Witness vs Southern Seas)

초록

한국과 스페인은 지리적으로는 먼 나라임에도 불구하고 문화·역사적으로 살펴보면 공통점이 많은 나라이다. 특히 현대사는 놀라울 정도로 비슷한데, 물론 그 구체적인 시기의 차이는 있다고 할지라도 20세기에 들어서면서 두 나라는 동족상잔의 비극인 내전을 겪었고, 내전이 끝나고 1인 독재시대를 경험하였으며, 독재시대가 끝나면서 민주화 과정으로 인한 사회적 진통을 겪게 된다. 이 두 나라의 70년대는 ‘성장 통’을 겪는 시기였으며, 특히 이 시기에 두 나라에서 ‘추리소설’이 성행하게 되는데, 이 시기의 추리소설들은 그 구조적 특성을 잘 이용하며 이러한 두 나라의 변화하고 있는 사회를 잘 반영해주고 있다. 흔히 추리소설은 명쾌한 탐정의 논리로 살인사건이 해결되며 독자의 궁금증을 해결해주는 카타르시스를 제공해주면서 그 대중성을 확보해 왔지만, 이러한 추리소설은 ‘탐정-살인사건-문제해결’이라는 장르적 특징으로 인해 곧 한계에 부딪치게 되었고, 똑같은 패턴이 반복되면서 서사적인 발전이 불가능한 흥미위주의 하위문학으로 치부되어 왔다. 그러나 공교롭게도 두 나라의 70년대에 폭발적으로 등장한 추리소설은 사회소설의 경향을 보여주며 추리소설의 장르적 한계를 뛰어넘어 추리소설의 서사화의 가능성을 보여주고 있는데, 이러한 추리소설을 한국에서는 ‘변용추리소설’, 스페인에서는 ‘흑색소설’이라 칭하며 구분하고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 추리소설의 장르적 특성을 잘 살려 사회를 반영하고 있는 한국의 ‘변용추리소설’의 대표작인 김성종의 『최후의 증인』(1979) 과 스페인의 ‘흑색소설’의 대표작으로 마누엘 바스케스 몬탈반의 『남쪽바다』(1979)를 중심으로 두 나라의 추리소설 형식의 탄생 배경과 사회 반영 양상을 살펴볼 것이며, 이 두 소설이 어떻게 추리소설을 서사화 시키고 있는지에 대해서 연구해 본다. 두 작품 모두 기본적인 추리소설의 장르적 특징에 주인공인 형사 혹은 탐정의 서사화를 통한 인간적인 고민과 번뇌, 그들이 직접 대면하는 사회의 민낯과 정치·사회적 이데올로기의 충돌 양상, 추리소설의 중심이 되는 사건의 해결 그러나 상황 개선의 여지가 없는 현실에 대한 비판적 시각, 회의, 반성 등이 작품의 골자를 이루며 기존의 추리소설과는 차별화 되는 특징을 보여주고 있다. 기존의 추리소설과는 다르게 인물의 서사화와 작품의 사회성을 담아내며 모순적 현대사에 대한 사유를 접합시켜 놓았다는 점에서 닮아있는 두 작품에 대한 연구는 추리소설의 또 다른 형태의 본격 소설로의 가능성을 보여주는데 기여하고 있으며, 지리적으로 먼 나라인 한국과 스페인이라는 두 나라에서 비슷한 사회적 배경을 가지고 탄생하였다는 점에서 문학적·문화적 비교연구 또한 가능하게 할 것이다.

영어초록

Korea and Spain are countries that are geographically distant but have a lot in common in terms of culture and history. In particular, the contemporary history of the two countries is remarkably similar. Of course, even though the specific period is different, the two countries have experienced civil war, a big tragedy in the 20th century, and a dictatorship period after the civil war, resulting in a common social pain. These two countries in the 1970s were undergoing a period of “growing pain”, and in particular, the detective stories became popular in the two countries during this period, reflecting well the society of that moment utilizing their structural characteristics. The detective stories have secured their popularity providing a catharsis that comes from solving the murder case that provokes the reader’s curiosity. Usually the case is solved with the logic of a clever detective. This type of stories is characterized by the structure of the genre like “detective - murder case – solution of case”. It soon became confronted with limitations, and as the same patterns were repeated, it was regarded as an interest-oriented subordinate literature that could not be developed as a narrative. However, unexpectedly, the detective stories which appeared explosively in the 70s in both countries show the tendency of social novel and the possibility of the narrative beyond the limit of the genre. These are called “metamorphic detective novel” in Korea and “black novel” in Spain respectively. Therefore, in this study, I will look at the backgrounds of the birth of the detective stories from both countries and the reflection of the society focusing on Kim Sung-jong’s The Last Witness(1979), representative work of the Korean metamorphic detective novel, and Manuel Vázquez Mortalbán's Southern Seas(1979), representative work of the Spanish black novel. And I’ll also examine how these two novels demonstrate the possibility of the narrative. Both of these works are based on the basic characteristics of the mystery genre. In addition to that, they show the problems of human anxiety and agony, the confrontation of the political and social ideology and the society they meet face to face, the critical point of view and reflect the reality that there is no room for improvement of the situation. These are the main features that distinguish them from the conventional mystery novels. Unlike the conventional mystery novels, this comparative study of the two novels, containing the narrative of the characters, the sociality and the reason for the contradictory contemporary history, demonstrates the possibility of the narrative as an another type of mystery novel. By extension, cultural and comparative studies will also be possible in that they are born with similar social backgrounds in two countries, Korea and Spain, which are geographically distant countries.
