초록

본 연구는 20세기 초 중국 설화․동화집 편찬을 주제로 두 가지 점을 고찰하였다. 첫째, 20세기 초 서양인들이 편찬한 중국설화․동화집을 목록화하고, 그 편찬 배경을 분석하였다. 19세기 후반~20세기 초 중국에 들어온 선교사, 외교관, 상인 등은 중국을 이해하고 중국인과 교류하기 위한 방편으로 다양한 중국학 저작 활동을 하였다. 그 중 중국의 설화와 동화는 간결하고도 흥미를 불러일으킬 수 있는 문학 장르이기에 선교사, 외교관, 작가 등 다양한 직업군의 서양인들이 수십 차례 편찬하였다. 이들 중 일부는 중국에서 체류하면서 자신이 직접 들은 이야기를 기록하였으며, 중국의 문언소설, 문헌설화집에서 작품을 선집하고 이야기를 재구성하기도 하였다. 이들은 설화․동화집 편찬 작업을 통해 중국인들이 서양인들과 다름없는 삶을 살고 동일한 감정을 갖고 있는 보편적 인간임을 보여주고, 서양인이 중국에 대해 갖고 있는 왜곡된 이미지를 수정하고자 하였다.
둘째, 허버트 앨런 자일스의 『중국동화집(Chinese fairy tales)』(1911) 출판 경위 및 수록 작품의 문학적 성격을 분석하여 편찬 의미를 고찰하였다. 자일스는 『요재지이』에 수록된 고사와 『서유기』, 『침중기』의 이야기 및 기타 총 12편의 이야기를 재화해 『중국동화집』을 편찬하였다. 저자는 이야기를 통해 인간의 어리석음을 풍자하는 한편, 인생의 지혜와 교훈을 전하며, 트릭스터 이야기를 통해 해학의 미학을 보여주었다. 또한, 신이한 제재를 통해 이야기의 즐거움을 전하고, 동․식물과 인간의 교류를 이야기하였다. 결론적으로, 자일스는 『중국동화집』 편찬을 통해 중국 동화의 다채로운 재미를 보여주고, 중국인과 중국 문화에 대한 이미지를 개선하고자 하였다.

영어초록

This study examined two points under the theme of the compilation of Chinese folktales and fairytales in the early 20th century. First, a collection of Chinese narrative tales and fairytales compiled by Westerners in the early 20th century was catalogued, and the background of the compilation was analyzed. Missionaries, diplomats, and merchants who entered China in the early 20th century performed various Chinese writing activities to understand China and interact with the Chinese. Chinese folktales and fairy tales have been compiled dozens of times by Westerners from various occupational groups, including missionaries, diplomats, and writers, as they are concise and interesting literary genres. Some of them recorded the stories they heard themselves while staying in China, selected works from Chinese literary novels and literature narrative collections, and reconstructed the stories. Through the compilation of narrative and fairy tale books, they attempted to show that the Chinese live the same life as Westerners and have the same feelings, and to correct the distorted image that Westerners have of China.
Second, the meaning of compilation was examined by analyzing the publishing process of Herbert Allen Giles' Chinese Fairy Tales(1911) and the literary character of the works. Giles compiled the Chinese Fairy Tales collection by re-creating the stories of Liaozhaizhiyi[Yojaejii], Xiyouji [Seoyugi], and Zhenzhongji[Chimjunggi], and a total of 12 other stories. The author satirized human stupidity through the story, conveyed the wisdom and lessons of life, and showed the aesthetics of humor through the story of Trickster. Additionally, the joy of the story was conveyed through divine sanctions, and the exchange between animals and plants and humans was discussed. In conclusion, Giles tried to show the colorful fun of Chinese fairytales through the compilation of Chinese Fairy Tales and to correct the distorted image that Westerners have of China.
