초록

東園雅集은 1767년부터 李惟秀의 정원인 東園에서 열렸던 사대부들의 詩會이다. 이 모임은 李惟秀, 南有容, 尹汲, 趙暾, 尹蓍東, 李得培, 沈履之, 金尙默, 金光默, 宋載經, 閔鍾顯, 兪彦鎬, 鄭逸 등 東園十三學士로 구성되었으며, 詩才를 인정받아 특별하게 참여한 노비 출신 鄭逸을 제외하고는 모두 고위 관직에 제수된 사대부 출신이었다. 이들은 복잡한 혼인척관계를 맺고 있었으며, 노론․낙론․청명당에 소속되어 동일한 정치적 목적을 추구하고 있었기 때문에 다른 사대부들의 가입이 제한되는 다소 폐쇄적인 성향을 지니고 있었다.
조선에 유입된 西園雅集圖는 사대부들에게는 詩社의 전범이 되었고, 畫工에게는 각광받는 畫題로 여겨졌다. 이로 인해 西園雅集에 대한 인식이 점차 정착되어갔고, 경제력을 가진 사대부들의 사적 모임이 증가하면서 개인 정원의 축조에 경쟁이 발생하게 되었다. 東園雅集이 열리던 이유수의 東園은 서울에서 제일이었다. 모임의 구성원들은 모두 의리를 추종하고 건전한 정치를 추구하여 예로부터 폐단으로 지목되던 척신의 존재를 인정하기 않은 청명당 소속이었다. 이들 집단은 사회적 장악력을 확보하고, 계층 내부의 결속력을 강화시키며, 동일한 정치적 목적을 달성하기 위하여 東園에서 긴밀한 단체 회합을 개최 유지하였다. 詩文會를 통해 경화세족간의 문예교류활동을 전개시키면서도, 홍봉한을 필두로 한 외척 중심의 국정 운영을 비판 견제하려 노력하였다. 결국 당파를 제거하려는 영조의 정책에 의해 東園雅集의 구성원들은 청명당으로 지목받아 대거 유배를 당하였고, 이후 東園雅集의 존속을 확보하지 못했다. 東園雅集의 구성원들은 소속 당파의 정책을 달성하기 위한 공통된 목표 의식을 추구하고 있었지만, 東園雅集의 경험담과 東園雅集圖의 감상 기록을 통해서라면 특별한 정치적 목적이 없는 순수한 사대부들의 문예양상을 읽어낼 수도 있다. 東園雅集의 구성원들이 표출한 예술활동은 무척이나 다양했다. 詩․文․書 창작은 기본이며, 유희, 수집, 음악 등 여러 분야에서의 취미와 여가 생활의 모습이 표출되어 東園雅集의 구성원뿐만 아니라 조선 후기 사대부들에게 나타나는 보편적인 사적 모임과 예술 활동의 양상을 확인할 수가 있다.
이렇듯 복합적인 목적 달성을 추구하고 있던 사대부 시회인 東園雅集은 조선 후기 정치사에서 척신을 배제한 국정 운영, 올바른 의리탕평을 실현하기 위한 시도를 엿보였는데, 이는 정조가 내세운 의리탕평에서 그 의의를 되새길 수 있다.

영어초록

Dongwonajip was an association of poets who were the noble scholars that were held in East Garden of Lee Yoo-soo since 1767. This association was comprised with 13 scholars of Lee Yoo-soo, Nam Yoo-yong, Yoon Geup, Cho Don, Yoon Si-dong, Lee Deuk-bae, Shim Ri-ji, Kim Sang-mook, Kim Gwang-mook, Song Jae-gyeong, Min Jong-hyeon, Yoo On-ho and Jeong Il. And with the exception of Jeong Il who was a slave participated in the group with the acknowledgement of his special talent in poetry, all others were from the noble class served in high ranking government officials. They had complicated marital relationship and strived for the same political purpose while involving in Noron, Nakron and Cheongmyeong Party that they displayed certain exclusive tendency to restrict the other noble scholars to join in.
Seowonajip-do that was established in Joseon was the example of poetry society for the scholars, and was considered as the spotlighted painting themes for painters. Because of the foregoing, the recognition on Seowonajip had settled gradually, and with the increase of private meetings by the scholars naturally, there was competition for building up the individual gardens. Dongwon of Lee Yoo-soo where Dongwonajip was held was the best in Seoul. The constituents of the organization sought for sound politics while following the righteousness and they were part of Cheongmyeong Party that was not recognizing the presence of kindred that was pointed as the ill-effect from the old days. These groups held close group meetings in Dongwon in order to secure social control, strengthen the blindness within the class, and accomplish the consistent political purposes.
It expressed as a simple poetry literature organization externally, but it checked and criticized the relative-oriented national administration with Hong Bong-han leading the way internally. Consequently, the constituents of Dongwonajip were pointed out as Cheongmyeong Party under the policy of King Youngjo that intended to eliminate the political factions, resulting in many to exile, and thereafter, Dongwonajip could not secure its survival.
The constituents of Dongwonajip strived for common sense of purpose to accomplish the policies of the respective political faction, but it also contained the innocent literature tendencies of scholars if appreciated only for the depiction of Dongwonajip-do. The art activities expressed by the constituents of Dongwonajip were extremely diverse. Creative poetry, literature and writing are the bases that the hobbies in various fields of entertainment, collection, music and the like as well as the appearances of leisure life are expressed to affirm the general private meetings, activities, and literature trend shown to the scholars as well as for constituents of Dongwonajip in the later Joseon.
As such, what political implication would there be for Dongwonajip that was the community for scholars that had striven for accomplishing the integrated purpose at the later Joseon Period? It was an attempt to realize the Tangpyeong (policy of impartiality) to remove the political faction as the politically correct Tangpyeong and was the beginning of gradual completion together with the enthroning of King Jeongjo.
