『鏡虛集』 편찬, 간행의 경위와 변모 양상 (An Account of Publications of Gyeongheo-jip and Its Textual Transformation)

초록

『경허집』은 모두 네 차례 편집, 또는 간행되었다. 이 중 최초로 편집된 漢巖筆寫本의 「선사경허화상행장」이 禪學院本에 실려 있지 않은 것은 한암이 이례적으로 경전과 옛 고승의 말을 인용하여 경허의 막행막식에 대한 길게 해명하는 한편 경허의 뒤를 잇는 후인들에게 경허의 행리를 무턱대로 따르지 말라고강하게 경계하였기 때문일 듯하다.
『경허집』은 뒤에 간행된 선학원본의 수록 작품이 훨씬 많지만 선학원본에 없는 작품이 한암필사본에일부 있다. 그리고 한암필사본에 한 제목으로 묶여 있던 작품들을 선학원본에서는 詩體별로 다시 분류되면서 새로운 제목이 많아지고 편차도 바뀌었다. 이는 일반적인 문집 체제를 따르면서 생겨난 결과이다.
선학원본의 많은 새 제목들은 문집을 편찬하면서 만해가 만들었고, 한암필사본의 제목도 본래의 작품들에는 제목이 없던 것을 한암이 적당한 제목을 만들고 그 아래 묶어 두었다고 추정된다.
한암필사본에는 「示慶奭十三歲童子」란 제목의 법문 끝부분인 게송과 일원상이 선학원본부터 경허의열반송으로 게제되어 실려 있다. 그리고 1981년에 간행된 『鏡虛法語』에서는 말미의 「鏡虛惺牛禪師 年譜」에 경허가 示寂하기 직전에 일원상을 그리고 일원상 바로 위에 써놓은 열반 게송 四行이 전해온다고 하고 이 게송을 실어 놓았다. 이는 실제로 경허의 열반송이 있었는지 여부는 차치하고, 경허 법맥을 세우려는 노력의 일환이었다고 생각된다.
뿐만 아니라 경허가 受法제자인 滿空과 慧月에게 각각 준 시와 게송의 제목이 바뀌고 나아가 공식적인전법게로 게제되는 과정 역시 경허 법맥의 만공 문중, 혜월 문중의 정립과 무관하지 않다고 추측된다.
한편 『경허법어』와 명정 번역본 『경허집』의 오역이 심각하고 고증의 오류도 있으므로 다시 교감 번역되어야 한다. 나아가 지금까지 간행 또는 영인된 『경허집』들을 모두 비교, 교감하여 연구자가 신뢰할 수있는 定本 『경허집』을 만드는 작업을 서둘러야 할 것이다.

영어초록

Gyeongheo-jip(The Anthology of Gyeongheo) has been edited or published four times so far.
Hanampilsabon(Hanam’s Hand-copy Edition) which was edited first among them is not included in the Seonhagweon edition, and it could be because Hanam, by quoting sutras and old masters’utterances, exceptionally warned Gyeongheo’s descendent practitioners not to incautiously imitate Gyeongheo’s behaviors and theories.
The Seonhagweon edition of Gyeongheo-jip which was published after Hanampilsabon and includes more works. However, some works of Gyeongheo were missed by the Seonhagweon edition and recorded in Hanampilsabon. Some works under same titles in Hanampilsabon were re-categorized by formats of poetry so that some new titles appeared and the order of poems were changed in the Seonhagweon edition. It is the result of following the general format for anthologies. Manhae re-titled some poems in the Seonhagweon edition in the process of editing it. Regarding the titles of poems in Hanampilsabon, it is assumed that Hanam attached suitable titles to the poems which originally did not have titles and bundled poems under the titles.
The poem and the circle at the last part of the Dharma-talk under the title “Sigyeongseoksibsamsedongja” in Hanampilsabon was recorded as Gyeongheo’s nirvana poem in the Seonhagweon edition and afterward. “The Chronology of Seon Master Gyeongheo Seongwoo” at the end of Gyeongheo-beobeo(the Dharma-talks of Gyeongheo) read that Gyeongheo drew a circle and wrote his four-line nirvana poem right above ○ and recorded the poem. Regardless of the real existence of Gyeongheo’s nirvana poem, it is regarded as one of the efforts to build Gyeongheo’s Dharma lineage.
Moreover, the whole process in which the titles of poems and gāthās Gyeongheo gave to Mangong and Hyeweol, his Dharma successors, were changed and in addition the poems and the gāthās were recorded as the official Dharma-transmission gāthās is also supposed to be related the establishment of Mangong’s Dharma lineage and of that of Hyeoweol.
Meanwhile, as Gyeongheo-beobeo and Myeongjeong’s translation of Gyeongheo-jip contain some serious misinterpretations and other mistakes about historical verifications, those texts should be carefully reviewed and retranslated. Furthermore, all editions of Gyeongheo-jip that have been published and copied so far should be reviewed and compared to each other, so that an officially certified edition of Gyeongheo-jip which could be trusted by researchers should be published as soon as possible.
