염상섭 소설의 장소성과 여성인물형 연구: ‘하숙집’과 ‘하숙집 여주인’을 중심으로 (A Study on the Place and Female Figures of Yeom Sang-seop’s Novel: Focusing on ‘Boarding house’ and ‘Landlady’)

초록

염상섭 소설에서 사랑은 현실의 구체적 생활과 결부되어 있으며, 돈과 사랑은 분리불가능한 관계로 얽혀있다. 염상섭 소설의 이러한 애정관과 소설적 구도를 전형적으로 드러내고 있는 공간과 인물이 바로 돈으로 거래되는 사적 공간인 ‘하숙집’이며, ‘하숙집 여주인’이라는 인물형이다. 이 장소성과 인물형을 압축적으로 드러내는 속성은 ‘경계성’이다. 하숙집 여주인은 신여성은 아니지만 경제활동을 하는 일종의 직업여성으로, 일반 가정부인들보다는 쉽게 남자들을 접할 수 있으나 조금만 가부장제의 질서 바깥으로 나가도 집 대신 몸을 물적 토대로 삼아야 하는 경계적 여성형이다. ‘하숙집’은, 공적 공간과 사적 공간, 경제활동 영역과 친밀성의 영역, 근대적 가치와 전근대적 가치가 완전히 통합되지 않은 채 혼재하고 있는 곳으로, 그동안 은폐되어 있던 집의 중층적인 장소성과 젠더 편향성을 가시화하는 역할도 함께 수행한다.
‘하숙집 여주인’과 ‘하숙집’의 혼종적이고 경계적인 성격은 이 인물형과 장소성을 해방기의 혼란과 균열을 드러내는 표상으로도 읽게 한다. 「일대의 유업」은 기현 모가 남편의 동생에게 집을 빼앗기는 것으로만 끝내지 않고 집이 장사 밑천으로 사라지게 될 것까지 암시함으로써, 봉건적 가부장의 유업보다 막강하게 부상하고 있는 자본의 힘과 논리를 함께 드러낸다. 따라서 기현 모가 지주부 동생에게 집을 빼앗기고 몰락하는 과정은 단순히 기현 모의 윤리적 타락이나 그에 따른 사회적 처벌만이 아니라 지주부로 상징되는 봉건적 가부장의 질서 자체가 붕괴되는 과정으로도 볼 수 있다.
그렇다고 기현 모가 자본과 가부장의 논리로부터 완전히 해방되었다고 볼 수는 없다. 전근대 시기에는 다소 은밀하게 결탁되어 있던 자본과 가부장의 논리는 해방 후 훨씬 노골적인 ‘가부장적 자본주의’로 작동하며 여성의 섹슈얼리티를 관리하고 상품화한다. 신여성도 아니고 물적 토대도 불안한 ‘하숙집 여주인’의 애정은 이 세속적인 현실 속에서 처참하게 모욕당하고 짓밟힌다. 그러나 염상섭이 이러한 세계를 그려낸 것이 “가부장적 자본주의 이데올로기를 수용하고 이를 전면화”하기 위해서라고 볼 수는 없다. 표면적으로 드러난 실패의 서사 이면에는 이 완강한 사회-장에 균열을 내는 ‘근대적 개인’으로서의 여성인물이 등장하고 있기 때문이다.

In Yeom Sang-seop’s novels, love is not psychological but always connected with the specific life of reality, and money and love are inextricably linked. The typical space and figure that reveals the love view and novel composition of Yeom Sang-seop’s novel is the boarding house and landlady. The landlady can easily meet men compared to other housewives, but even if she goes out of the order of patriarchy, she should use ‘body’ instead of ‘house’ as material. It is a borderline female type. ‘Borderline’ is a property that shows the sence of place of the boarding house. The boarding house, which appeared with the modern individual who left the house, is a place where public and private spaces, economic and intimate areas, modern values and pre-modern values are mixed together without being completely integrated. It also plays a role in visualizing the sence of place and gender bias.
This hybrid and borderline character of the landlady and the boarding house also reads this character and place as a representation of the chaos and rift of the liberation period. During the Liberation period, although the authority of men generally fell due to war, unemployment, and poverty, the idea of the feudal patriarchal did not completely disappear. Even if the husband dies, the wife must remain in the patriarchal order so that the wife can only benefit from the patriarchal inheritance. The heritage of husband means not only the house on the physical basis but also the values and order of the men who purchase and own such a house. However, these novels do not end with Kee Hyun’s mother being taken the house by her husband’s brother, but they even suggest that the house will disappear with business funds. This reveals the power and logic of capitalism, which is rising more powerfully than the feudal patriarchal inheritance. Thus, the fall of Ki-hyun’s mother can be seen not only as her ethical corruption or its social punishment, but also as the process of the collapse of the order of the feudal patriarch, symbolized by her husband.
This does not mean that Ki hyun’s mother is completely free from the ideology of capitalism and patriarchy. In addition to Ki-hyun’s mother, it is an institutional device that no one can easily escape, and the logic of capital and patriarchal, which was somewhat secretly confined in the pre-modern period, acts as a more explicit “patriarchal capitalism” after liberation, managing and commercializing women’s sexuality. Outdoor women, now unprotected from patriarchy, must face naked with the more wicked and bloody realities of reality. The affection of the landlady, who is not a new woman and unstable in her material foundation, is horribly insulted and trampled under secular realities. However, Yeom Sang-seop’s depiction of this world cannot be seen as “supporting the greatness of patriarchy from the beginning” or “to accept and totalize patriarchal capitalist ideology”. This is because female characters as ‘modern individuals’ appear behind the narrative of failure.
