방정환의 학생지에 나타난 브나로드 운동 고찰 (A Study on the V Narod Movement Appearing in Haksaeng(학생), a Magazine Published by Bang Jung-Hwan)

초록

학생지는 방정환이 1929년 3월 창간하여 1930년 11월에 통권 18호를 끝으로 폐간 된 학생들의 계몽 교양 잡지이다. 학생지는 내부적으로는 여름방학 특집호(학생 1930.7월호)에 따른 대규모 농촌계몽 운동 참가했던 학생들의 경찰서 유치장 수감 사건 때문에, 외부적으로는 학생지의 적극적인 농촌계몽운동, 즉 브나로드 운동이 광주학생 독립운동과 같은 항일운동으로 확산되지 않을까 하는 가능성에 대한 조선총독부의 사전 조치 때문에 강제 폐간을 당했다.
1920년∼1935년 약 15년 동안에 펼쳐진 브나로드 운동은 전개 양상에 따라 시기적으 로 3단계로 나눌 수 있다. 제1기(1920∼1925)는 우리 민족의 참혹한 현실에 대한 각성을 촉구하면서 문맹퇴치 등 브나로드 운동에 대한 기본적인 성격과 방향을 제시하는 시기 이다. 제2기(1926∼1930)는 천도교청년회나 천도교청년당의 활동, 학생지 학생들의 여름방학 중 귀향 활동, 기독교계의 활동, 언론계의 활동 등을 들 수 있다. 제3기(1931∼1935)는 ≪동아일보≫와 ≪조선일보≫, 조선어학회 등이 적극적으로 앞장서서 농촌계몽 운동을 펼쳤던 시기이다.
학생지 18권이 발행되었던 두 해 동안 학생들의 여름방학 브나로드 운동, 귀향 활 동을 돕기 위한 특집을 냈던 것은 1929년 7월호 방학준비호와 1930년 7월호 방학특집호 2회였다. 방학준비호(1929)의 주요 활동 내용은 한글보급운동을 비롯하여 토론회, 야학 조직, 농촌체험, 단발하기, 미신타파, 사치 낭비 금지 등 농민들의 생활 속에서 실천할 수 있는 다양한 농촌계몽 활동들이 망라되어 있다. 특히 문맹퇴치를 위한 한글보급운동 에 관한 내용이 무려 43%를 차지하고 있다. 방학특집호(1930)의 주요 내용은 한글보급 운동 비율은 낮아지고, 농촌부녀회 조직법 등 조직 방법이 30%, 농촌문제 강연자료 등 강연이 30% 정도의 대등한 비율로 실려 있다. 1929년 방학준비호에 비하면 1930년 여 름방학 학생들의 브나로드 운동은 공격적인 조직 활동과 적극적인 강연 활동에 초점이 맞춰져 있다고 할 수 있다.
학생지에 나타난 브나로드 운동은 1931년 이후 동아일보 등의 브나로드 운동으로 새롭게 확대되었으며, 한글보급운동 등을 포함한 농촌계몽운동 즉 브나로드 운동은 일 제강점기 일어났던 거국적인 민족자강운동의 한 축이었다고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

Haksaengji, a magazine for students, was first published by Bang Jung-Hwan on March 1929 with the purpose of the enlightenment campaign for students. The publication of Haksaengji ceased with the number 18 issue on November 1930. Its publication was forcefully closed because the students who participated in a large-scale rural enlightenment campaign following the summer vacation (the July issue of Haksaengji) were imprisoned at the police station. Also, it was due to the precautionary measures taken by the Japanese Government- General of Korea on fears about the possibility that such active campaign like the v narod movement might spread into an anti-Japanese movement such as Gwangju Student Independence Movement.
The v narod movement which took place for about 15 years from 1920 to 1930 can be divided into three phases depending on the development pattern. The first phase (1920∼1925) is a period in which its basic concepts and directions such as eradication of illiteracy were presented by urging the awakening to the harsh reality faced by the people. The second phase (1926∼ 1930) includes activities of the Cheondogyo Youth Association or Party, voluntary activities for rural communities during summer vacation from the students who work for the Haksaengji, activities of the Christian association and of the media. The third phase (1931∼1935) is a period when the Dong-a Ilbo, the Chosun Ilbo and the Korean Language Society took the lead in the rural enlightenment campaign.
Each of the first and the second July issues was published in 1929 and in 1930 for the vacation preparation and the special vacation edition so as to help students with their summer vacation v narod movement and homecoming activities during the two years when the 18 volumes of Haksaengji were published. The main contents of the vacation preparation issue published in July 1929 includes various activities for rural enlightenment movement such as discussion forums, night school organizations, farm experiences, haircut campaigns, doing away with superstition, bans on luxury and waste, etc. as well as the Hangeul dissemination movement. The Hangeul dissemination movement which was designed to eradicate illiteracy, in particular, accounted for up to 43 %. The main contents of the special vacation edition (1930) contained within at an equal rate of about 30%, which covered 30% regarding the organizational methods such as the structure of the rural women’s association, about 30% of various courses including lectures on rural issues and relatively, and the proportion about the Hangeul dissemination movement lowered. Compared to the vacation issue published in 1929, the contents on the students’ v narud movement in the 1930 summer vacation special edition focused on vigorous organizational activities and on active parts in the running on lecturers.
The v narod movement appearing the Haksaengji was expanded into a new type such as the Dong-Ilbo v narod movement after 1931. The movement, for example, rural enlightenment campaigns including the Hangeul dissemination movement are considered to be one of the movements for national strenuous efforts on the nationwide scale during the Japanese occupation period on the Korean peninsula.
