천리마시대 속도와 '노인' 담론 (1) ― 『천리마』의 연재만화 <천리마 할아버지>를 중심으로 (Cheollima-Era Speed and Discourse on ‘Old Man' ― Focusing on Cheollima Grandpa, a Cartoon Serialized in the Cheollima Magazine)

초록

천리마운동의 선전선동을 위해 창간된 북한 유일의 대중종합잡지 『천리마』에는 천리마시대 속도 질주성과 조응하기 어려운 ‘노인’들이 등장한다. 그들은 항일무장투쟁기 역사적 증언자, 수상 교시의 전파자, 농촌공동체의 어른 등으로 복수의 목소리를 내면서 사회주의 인민으로서의 자기 역할을 적극적으로 모색하고 실천했다. 이러한 『천리마』의 노인 담론을 대표하는 것은 창간 초기부터 1973년까지 연재된 만화 <천리마 할아버지>로 천리마시대를 관통하며 만화 캐릭터를 통해 노인의 표상을 형성했다. 이 글은 천리마기수 전형과 달리 사회주의 발전 속도에서 소외되거나 주변부에 머물렀을 것으로 상상되는 자들을 북한이 어떻게 대상화하였는지 <천리마 할아버지>를 중심으로 살펴보고자 했다.
‘천리마 할아버지’는 농촌 중산층 대가족의 가부장이자 마을의 어른으로 노인 특유의 부지런함과 지혜를 활용해 노동시간과 노동현장의 틈을 메우며 마을사람들의 공경을 받았다. 증산경쟁과 시기단축의 과열을 보충하는 존재였던 이 노인은 2년여의 휴재 후 통신대학을 졸업하고 마을로 복귀하면서 모습이 달라진다. 독서와 기악합주 등의 교양을 갖추고 청년돌격대 못지않은 기력과 기술력을 선보이며 천리마기수 전형에 가까운 형상으로 변신한 것이다. 마침내 노인의 마을이 천리마 작업반으로 선정되어 표창을 받고 이후 <천리마 할아버지>는 체제정당성을 입증하고 수상 교시를 전파하는 전형성에 고착되며 주체시대를 맞이한다.
『천리마』의 노인 담론은 ‘청산리방법’을 전후하여 농촌 노동력 부족과 정치훈련의 미숙이라는 현실적 문제에 대응하는 과정에서 출현하였다. 마을과 가족 공동체 관계의 거점이자 리터러시 능력의 하한선으로 노인을 발견한 것은 사회주의 교양의 계몽이 과제였던 대중종합지로서의 본령에 의거한 선택이었다. 노인 담론의 개진 속에서 ‘천리마 할아버지’의 표상이 구축되는 과정을 살펴보면 천리마시대 초기에는 노인의 느린 속도와 삶의 지혜가 존중되는, 즉 속도에 따른 수행능력의 기대에 사회적 배려와 융통성이 작동했던 것으로 보인다. 하지만 속도정치가 질주하면서 점차 수행능력의 차이가 몰수되고 노인과 같은 주변적, 보충적 존재가 후경화 될 것이 예견된다.

영어초록

Cheollima, the only popular general magazine in North Korea launched for the propaganda of the Cheollima Campaign, features 'old men' who have difficulty in harmony with Cheollima-era's speed. As historical witnesses of the anti-Japanese armed struggle, preachers of the dictator's teachings, and elders in rural communities, the ‘old men’ actively sought and practiced their roles as socialist people, offering their united voices. The representative of this discourse on the old men of Cheollima is Cheollima Grandpa, which was serialized from the beginning of its publication to 1973, forming the representation of the elderly through cartoon characters throughout the Cheollima era This paper sought to focus on Cheollima Granpa to examine how North Korea targeted those who were supposed to have been alienated from the pace of socialist development or stayed marginalized, unlike the Cheollima rider model.
“Grandpa Cheollima” was a patriarch of a large rural middle-class family and a villagers’ senior, and was honored by the villagers, filling the gaps between working hours and the workplace by using his diligence and wisdom unique to the elderly. This old man, who served to help calm the overheating of competition for increased production and shortening of the period, changed his appearance as he returned to the village after graduating from an open university after a two-year contribution of articles to the media. He was transformed into a shape close to that of the Cheollima jockey, demonstrating his strength and technology comparable to those of the youth assault squad, equipped with the liberal arts including reading and instrumental ensemble. Finally, the village of the old man was selected as the Cheollima working group and received a commendation. Afterward, Cheollima Grandpa proved the legitimacy of the regime and entered the Juche era by adhering to the typical format of disseminating the Dictator's teachings.
Considering this discourse on the old man, it is deemed that social consideration and flexibility acted on the expectation of performance competence in line with the speed in the early stage of North Korea's socialist development. However, as the underperformance and differences in performance competence are confiscated in the rush of speed politics, peripheral and supplementary beings such as the old man are gradually becoming marginalized. As such, Cheollima Grandpa is a work that reproduces the way in which the socialist equality values and the discourse on the speed of development are related, and the process in which the hierarchy is adjusted.
