조선공업화에서 식민지공업으로 : 식민지시기 공업 연구의 흐름과 과제 (From ‘Joseon Industrialization’ to ‘Colonial Industry’ : A Critical Review in the Study of the Industry in the Colonial Period)

초록

본 연구는 1930년대부터 현재에 이르는 식민지시기 공업 연구를 5개의 시기로구분하고 시기별 공업 연구의 맥락과 흐름을 검토한 것이다. 1930년대 조선공업화에 대한 연구에서 시작한 식민지시기 공업 연구는 해방 직후 자립적 경제체제구축을 위한 방안 속에서 조선공업화에 대한 비판적 인식이 심화되었다. 1960-70년대에는 내재적 발전론에 기반하여 민족자본 연구가 활성화되고 민족자본이놓인 복합적 조건이 탐구되었으며, 1980-90년대 한국 사회성격 논쟁과 식민지근대화 논쟁을 거치면서 식민지 자본주의에 대한 문제제기와 더불어 식민지 공업에대한 계통적, 구조적 연구가 진행되었다. 2000년대 들어 식민지근대성론의 영향아래 경제통계에 대한 담론적 분석과 일상 및 로컬에 기반한 지역 공업 및 자본가 연구가 이루어졌다.
1980-90년대 두 차례 논쟁을 경과하면서 식민지시기 공업의 위상과 성격에 대한문제제기가 이루어지고 분야별로 상당한 연구성과가 축적되었으나 식민지 자본주의의 발전과정 및 잉여수탈 구조, 식민지시기 공업의 성격에 대한 해명은 아직요원한 실정이다. 이를 위하여 수탈 개념에 대한 비판적 검토, 식민지 공업에대한 개념 규정, 동아시아에서 식민지시기 공업의 역사적 사례에 대한 비교 연구등을 제기하고자 한다.

영어초록

This paper aims to analysis the study of the industry in the colonial period from1930s to the present. The study of Korean modern industry was started in the studyon the “Joseon Industrialization(朝鮮工業化)” in 1930s. After Korea's liberation fromjapanese colonial rule, the critical thought on the ‘Joseon Industrialization’ wasdeepened in the program for self-supporting economic system. From 1960s to 1970s,the study on the national capital was vitalized and its complex social conditions wereexplored based on “the inherent developmental theory(內在的發展論)”. From 1980sto 1990s, the argument on the characteristics of Korean society brought out aquestion about the capitalistic development in the colonial period and the argumenton colonial modernization resulted in the systematic and structual study on theindustry in the colonial period. Under the influence of the theory of colonialmodernity from 2000s, the studies on the discourse analysis of economic statistics andregional industry and regional capitalists based on the study of everyday life and thelocal were carried out.
After two rounds of arguments, the questions on the position and character of the Korean industry in the colonial period were posed and significant achivement in theeach types of industries has been made. But it is yet far from the investigation inthe capitalistic development, the system of the dispossession of excess profits andthe characteristic of the industry in the colonial period. For advancing the task, Iwant to give some opinions about the critical review on the concept of“dispossession” and the definition of “Colonial Industry(植民地工業)” and thecomparative studies on the colonial industry in East Asia.
