즐문토기사회의 이식에 관한 시론 (Introduction on the earring of Chulmun Pottery Community)

초록

신석기시대는 신체 장식이 본격적으로 이루어지고 다양한 장신구가 사회적 가치와 미의식과 결부되면서 널리 사용된다. 신석기시대에 처음으로 출현하여 착용하는 이식은 신체 장식품으로 새로운 종류를 추가한다는 의미 이외에 신체 훼손 행위를 통해 치장한다는 점에서 기존 액세서리와 다른 차원의 장신구이다.
본 연구는 최근 발굴자료와 연구 성과를 바탕으로 신석기시대 즐문토기사회의 이식에 대해 시론적으로 검토·분석한 것이다. 분석 결과 즐문토기사회의 이식은 착장방법과 형태, 재질에 따라 삽입형 이전(耳栓)과 고리형 결상이식(玦狀耳飾)으로 대별되며, 각각의 이식은 형식적인 특징에 따라 출토상태, 분포, 존속시기, 사회적 성격 등에서 다른 양상을 보인다.
토제이전은 동남해안지역을 중심으로 출토하며, 분포 양상으로 보아 내륙과 서해안·동해안지역에서는 이전 착용 풍습이 없었던 것으로 보인다. 이전 형태는 기본적으로 원반형을 이루지만, 문양의 유무, 크기, 내외면의 처리 방식, 단면 형태 등 세부 속성에서 다소 차이를 보이며 형식적 속성에 따라 5형식으로 구분할 수 있다.
이전은 결상이식이 즐문토기 전기 무렵에 소멸한 후 중기 단계부터 출현하여 후기 단계까지 사용되었던 것으로 추정되나 말기까지 존속하였을 가능성도 있다. 한반도 즐문토기 사회에서 이전이 갖는 의미는 불투명하지만 유적 당 1~2점 정도 소량 출토된다는 점을 고려한다면 집단이나 취락 내에서 착장자가 한정되었을 것으로 추정된다.
결상이식은 남해안지역을 중심으로 전국적인 분포상을 보이나 주로 남해안과 동해안지역에 밀집되는 경향이 있다. 재질은 연옥을 포함하여 옥질의 사문암, 석영, 납석, 활석 등이 있으며, 색조는 담녹색, 유백색, 담갈색을 띤다. 기본 형태는 환상을 이루며 평면 형태와 윤부(輪部,) 중앙공 크기, 결구(玦口) 제작기법과 형태 등 세부 속성에 따라 5형식으로 구분된다.
한반도 결상이식은 제작기술과 형식적인 특징, 출현 시기 등으로 보아 중국 동북지역 흥륭와문화(興隆窪)의 옥기 확산과 그 문화적 영향으로 신석기시대 조기의 동삼동식토기문화 단계에 출현하여 자체적인 변용과정을 거치면서 전기까지 존속한 것으로 추정된다. 그리고 결상이식은 유적에서 출토되는 한정된 수량, 소재의 희소성, 가공의 어려움 등으로 보아 사회적으로 혹은 집단 내의 특정 역할과 위치를 담당한 소수 성원이 착용하였을 것으로 보이며, 위신재로서의 기능도 했을 것이다.

영어초록

Body ornaments were widespread in the Neolithic Age as various accessories became closely linked to the social values and aesthetics. Starting to appear in the Neolithic Age, earrings are a new type of body ornament and have different meanings from previous ornaments as they are worn through an act of body modification.
This study reviews and analyzes recent excavation and new literature on the earrings of the Chulmun pottery community in the Neolithic Age. There are two types in the earrings of the Chulmun pottery community, the insertion-type clay earring and ring-type slit-stone earring, with different methods of wearing, types and materials. Each earring type displays different morphological trends in the context of burial, geographical distribution, time periods, social characteristics and so forth.
The clay earrings are found in the southeast coastal regions, and they do not seem to have been adopted in the inland, west coast, and east coastal regions. The clay earring type was basically disc-shape, but there were certain differences in the attribute details, such as patterns, size, processing method of internal and external surfaces, cross-section shape, and so forth. Based on morphological attributes, they can be classified into five types.
After the disappearance of the slit-stone earring around the first period of the Chulmun pottery, the clay earrings seem to appear from the mid-phase to the later phase, possibly until the terminal phase. The implication of the clay earrings in the Chulmun pottery community of the Korean Peninsula is not thoroughly understood; but considering that they are found in each site in small numbers (one or two pieces), it can be assumed that they were exclusively used by a limited group of people in a community or a village.
The slit-stone earrings show nationwide distribution with its center in the southern coastal region, but they tend to be clustered around the southern coastal and eastern coastal regions. Raw materials used include nephrite along with serpentinite of jade material, quartz, phgrophllite, soapstone and others with the colors of pale green, ivory white, and pale brown colors. The basic shape is formed and can be classified into five types based on detailed attributes in plane shape, size of limbal, central pore, manufacturing technique of slit and shape.
The slit-stone earring of the Korean Peninsula seems to appear in the incipient phase Neolithic Age with the expansion of jade-ware and its cultural influence in the Xinglongwa Culture in the northeastern region of China, based on the manufacturing technique and morphology, time of appearance and so forth, and existed until the early phase, undergoing an independent development process through time. Considering the limited number found in excavations, rarity of materials, and the difficulty of processing, only a small number of people that had special roles and positions within the community or group seem to have worn the slit-stone earrings, which may have functioned as prestige goods.
