조선 후기 왕녀 가례시 물목 중 보자기에 관한 연구 (Study on Bojagi used in Princess’s Garye Props in the Late Joseon Dynasty)

초록

이 연구는 조선후기 왕녀의 가례기록인 가례등록과 가례의궤에 나타난 왕녀 18인의 가례물품 중 가례 절차에 사용된 보자기를 살펴보았다. 연구 대상의 시기는 17~19세기이며, 연구 대상의 인원은 총 18인의 왕녀로 공주 7인, 옹주 8인, 군주 2인, 현주 1인이다. 『국혼정례』 이전에 가례를 올린 왕녀는 숙안공주(1650년)외 7인이며, 국혼정례 이후에 가례를 치른 왕녀는 화유옹주를 비롯하여 10인이다.
1) 『국혼정례』 왕녀 가례 절차에 기록된 보자기는 56건이다. 『국혼정례』 이전에 가례를 치른 왕녀의 가례 절차에 사용된 보자기는 41건~48건이다. 국혼정례 이후에 가례를 치른 왕녀는 39건~58건으로 덕온공주 57건, 영혜옹주 58건, 화길옹주 43건, 청선군주 40건, 청근현주 39건이다. 이는 왕녀의 신분별 차이뿐만 아니라 가례시 왕실 상황에 따라 보자기의 건수가 차이가 있음을 보인다.
2) 가례 절차에 따라 사용된 보자기의 색은 홍색을 주로 사용했고, 인문보자기의 경우 백색을 사용했다. 소재는 홍주ㆍ홍정주ㆍ홍면주ㆍ홍세목ㆍ홍면포ㆍ백정포ㆍ백면포가 사용되었다. 『국혼정례』 이전에는 홍정주와 홍주를 주로 사용하였고, 동뢰연에 사용되는 요와 공주의 이부자리와 병풍의 싸개로 백면포 인문보자기를 사용하였다. 국혼정례 이후에는 홍주를 주로 사용하였다.
3) 가례에 사용된 보자기의 크기별 용도를 살펴보면 1폭 보자기는 망건을 쌌다. 2폭 보자기는 각종 신발ㆍ산 기러기를 싸는데 사용하였다. 3폭 보자기는 각종 칠함 내부와 모라사모ㆍ립ㆍ소반ㆍ빗접함에 사용하였다. 4폭 보자기는 상ㆍ초를 담는 홍칠함ㆍ청초립을 넣는 집(家)ㆍ연록피화를 싸는데 사용하였고, 5폭 보자기는 조율단수를 담은 주홍사방반(朱紅四方盤)에 사용하였다. 6폭 보자기는 각종 칠함 내부ㆍ외부에, 8폭 보자기는 이부자리ㆍ교배석ㆍ병풍에 사용되었고, 10폭 보자기는 고족상보로 사용되었다.
4) 보자기 기록을 분석한 결과 『국혼정례』 제정 이후에는 홍주(紅紬)를 주로 사용한 것으로 보아 왕실에서 부터 비용의 낭비를 없애고자 하는 검소한 혼례문화가 정착된 것으로 확인되었다. 다만, 19세기에 이르러 일부 금전지를 갖춘 보자기를 사용한 것은, 검소함을 따르기 보다는 왕실의 위엄과 예를 다하는 것으로 왕실혼례의 풍속이 변화한 것으로 해석할 수 있다.

영어초록

This study investigated the bojagi used in the ‘garye’ procedure, a rite for royal events includingweddings in Joseon dynasty, among the 18 royal ladies' ritual items that appeared in theGaryedeungrok (嘉禮謄錄) and Garyeuigwe (嘉禮儀軌), which are the ritual records of late JoseonDynasty's royal women.
The study subjects ranged from the 17th to the 19th century, and the number of subjects to bestudied was a total of 18 royal ladies, comprising 7 gongju (公主 daughters of the Queen), 8 ongju (翁主daughters of concubines), 2 gunju (郡主 daughters of a crown princess), and 1 hyeonju (縣主 daughterof a concubine of the crown prince).『Kukhon jeongrye (國婚定例)』(Exemplar Regulations of RoyalWeddings, 1749). There were seven royal women, including Sukan gongju (1650), who performed theceremony before the 『Kukhon jeongrye』, and ten royal women, including Hwayu ongju, who performed the ceremony after the 『Kukhon jeongrye』.
1) According to 『Kukhon jeongrye』, 56 bojagies were used in the garye procedure of the royal women. There are 41 to 48 bojagies used in the garye procedure by the royal women who performed the garye prior to the 『Kukhon jeongrye』. After the 『Kukhon jeongrye』, 39 to 58 bojagies are used in the garye of the royal women. Dukon gongju (德溫公主) used 57 bojagies, Yeonghye ongju (永惠翁主) used 58, Chungsun gunju (淸璿郡主) used 40, and Chunggeun hyeonju (淸瑾縣主) used 39. This showsthat the number of bojagies used differs depending on the status of the gongju and ongju, and the kunju and hyeonju. This shows that the number of bojagies used differs depending on the status of the royal women and the situation of the garye event.
2) The colors of the bojagi used according to the garye procedure were mainly red. For inmoon-bojagi, white was mainly used. The fabrics were hongju, hongjungju, hongmyeonju, hongsaemok, hongmyeonpo, baekjungpo, baekmyeonpo (types of silk). Before the 『Kukhon jeongrye』, mostly hongjungju and hongju were used, and baekmyeonpo inmoon-bojagi was used as the cover of the bedding and folding screen of Princess Yowa used in Dongreoyeon. After the 『Kukhon jeongrye』,hongju was mostly used.
3) Upon examining the use of bojagi in the garye by size, the 1-fold bojagi were used to wrap a manggeon (網巾). The 2-fold bojagi was used to wrap shoes and live geese(生雁). The 3-fold bojagi was used at inside of the chilham (漆函) and molasamo (冒羅紗帽), lib (笠), soban (小盤), bitjeopham (梳函). The 4-fold bojagi was used for hongchilham (紅漆函) which contained table and candle, for a case containing chungcholib (靑草笠), and to wrap a yeonrokpiwha (烟鹿皮靴). The 5-fold bojagi was used for juhongsabangban (朱紅四方盤), which contained chestnuts, jujubes, and dansu (棗栗腶脩). The 6-fold bojagi was used for the inside and outside of various chilham (漆函). The 8-fold bojagi was usedfor bedding, gyobaeseok (交拜席), folding screen(屛風) and the 10-fold bojagi was used for gojoksang(高足床).
4) After analyzing the bojagi records, it was confirmed that following the enactment of the 『Kukhon jeongrye』, hongju (紅紬) became the primary fabric used, establishing a frugal wedding culture aimed at reducing wasteful spending within the royal family. However, the use of Geumjeonji in the 19th century suggests a departure from this frugality, potentially reflecting a shift towards prioritizing the dignity and customs of royal weddings over strict economization.
