서울 中區지역 유적 출토 근대 도자 (Modern Ceramics Excavated in the Archaeological Sites of Jung-gu in Seoul.)

초록

서울 중구는 朝日修好條規 속약의 체결을 계기로 일대에 외국 공사관이 개설되자 외국인들의 입경과거주가 본격화되었으며, 이후 일제강점기에는 조선은행, 동양척식회사 등 굴지의 일본기업들이 들어서면서최대 經營街, 상점가를 형성하였다. 주거주자와 방문자들 가운데 재력과 권력을 갖춘 외국인들이 밀집한것은 이 일대 유적의 출토물과 밀접하게 상관된다.
출토되는 도자유물은 조선백자, 일본자기, 서양자기 등 비교적 다양한 편이지만, 기종과 유통 범위가시기별로 변화하면서 수요공급 양상이 달라졌을 것으로 보인다. 백자는 하향평준화가 본격화되는 19세기후반 이후의 생산품들이 주류를 이루는 것으로 확인된다. 즉 중구지역 유적에서 출토되는 백자는 기종과기법 등에서 분영 민영 이후 쇠락된 전형을 보여준다. 이 때문에 모든 유적에서 일괄적으로 백자는 출토되었지만, 일대 조선인 거주자들의 생활기반이 그다지 높지 못하거나 백자보다 일본자기 수요가 더 풍부했을가능성을 제기할 수 있다.
이에 비하면 일본자기를 비롯한 수입자기의 출토는 확인되는 사례가 풍부하다 일본자기는 대부분 일본 규슈(九州)와 나고야(名古屋) 지역에서 제작된 것이 차지하지만 일부는 일본 내수용인 것으로 확인된다.
인근의 종로구, 서대문구와 비교하면 소비된 품목들이 대부분 유사한 경향을 나타내고 있다. 이 중에서 「大 音精製」, 「恒春號製」 銘 식기들과 백자녹유식기들은 꾸준히 발견되는 양상을 보이며, 그밖에도 다양한 생활용기들이 출토되었다. 일본자기는 일부 양질품의 경우 소비자의 수준과 위치가 상대적으로 우월했다고볼 수 있으나, 대중적인 그릇들은 가까운 南大門市場이나 開市場에서 공급받아 사용된 것으로 보인다. 그외 貞洞街에서 수습된 일부 서양자기편들은 이곳에서 거주하던 공사관, 외국숙박시설 등과 관련된 것으로추정된다.
당대 일본자기의 소비인식은 백자와 차이를 보였으며, 발견되는 사례에서도 기종과 수량에 차이를 보였다. 이는 국내에서의 도자 생산여건과 관련이 깊다. 특히 국내에서 생산이 불가능했던 기계생산제품들은조선 말기백자와는 상당히 차별된 제품이었기 때문에 이러한 접근성이 가능하다. 중구는 한양도성의 중심에 위치했고, 근방에 궁궐과 관청, 외국계 기업 등이 자리하여, 이 지역의 실권자는 재력과 권력을 두루 갖춘 각계 인물들이었다. 따라서 유적에서 발견되는 도자의 상당수는 이들을 상대로 소비되었을 것이며, 때로는 시간이 경과하면서 조선인과 조선 요업에 영향을 미쳤을 것으로 보인다. 따라서 새로운 도자문화수용에서 가장 적극적인 역할을 할 수 있었던 인적구성이 중구에 밀집했다는 점에서 이 일대 유적의 중요성을강조할 수 있겠다.

영어초록

As foreign legations were established in Jung-gu of Seoul after the Japan-Korea Treaty of Amity, foreigners began to travel to and reside in the area. Later during the Japanese colonial rule, the area became the most thriving business and shopping district, as the leading Japanese companies such as the Joseon Bank and the Oriental Development Company opened their offices there. The excavated porcelain in this area reflects the characteristics of the foreign travelers and residents, who were rich and powerful.
Generally speaking, various kinds of ceramics were excavated in the area including Joseon white porcelain, Japanese porcelain, and Western porcelain. However, the kind of porcelain and the area of its distribution might have changed according to the period. The white porcelain found in the district was mainly made after the late nineteenth century when the quality of white porcelain became lower. In other words, the white porcelain excavated in the sites of Jung-gu illustrates how the variety and quality of object types and techniques for making white porcelain declined after the Bunwon was privatized. This low quality of the white porcelain might be derived from the low standards of living of the Joseon residents in the area or from the higher demand for Japanese porcelain than Joseon white porcelain.
Japanese porcelain was excavated in abundance compared to Joseon porcelain. Most of the Japanese porcelain had been produced in Kyushu and Nagoya for export, but some of them were made for domestic consumption. The kinds of items consumed in the area are similar to those in the neighboring Jongno-gu and Seodaemun-gu. Table wares with an inscription such as “Daion seisei” (大音精製), “Kōshun gō sei” (恒春號製) and those with green glaze have been constantly found and other tables wares were also excavated. Some high-quality Japanese porcelain were consumed by the high class. However, popular vessels were supplied in the nearby Namdaemun Market or the state-sanctioned market. In addition, Western porcelain shards collected in Jeongdong Street seem related to the legation, who resided in the district and foreign lodges.
The Japanese porcelain excavated in the Jung-gu was different from Joseon white porcelain in terms of their kinds and the quantity of each kind. This is related to the difference between the two countries in their condition in porcelain production. For example, the Japanese porcelain manufactured by machines could not be produced in Korea at that time, so that it was very distinct from late Joseon white porcelain in the Korean market. As Jung-gu was located in the center of the capital Hanyang and close to palaces, governmental offices, and foreign companies, many of the residents in the district were financially and politically powerful figures in various fields. They were the consumers of much of the porcelain excavated in the area, which consequently affected Joseon people and their porcelain production. The sites in Jung-gu are important in that the residents mainly consist of the people who could lead the introduction of a new ceramic culture to Korea.
