한국 근대 기독교미술에 나타난 ‘土着化’의 含意-箕山 金俊根 筆 '텬로력뎡' 揷圖를 중심으로- (Implications of Naturalization in Korean Modern Christian Art Focused on the first Korean version of The Pilgrim's Progress')

초록

본 논문은 19세기 말 개항기에 기독교가 한국에 수용되는 과정에서 나타난 한국 근대 土着化된 기독교미술의 圖象에 담긴 함의를 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다.
그 연구범위는, 1895년 게일 선교사(James Scarth Gale, 1863-1937)에 의해 영국소설 The Pilgrim's Progress가 번역되는 과정에서 토착화된 도상으로 그리게 된 기산 김준근 필『텬로력뎡』42장의 삽도가 중심이다.
기산 김준근 필 『텬로력뎡』은, 기독교 복음에 관한 지식과 정보를 얻고 커뮤니케이션의 매체로서 국가 간의 이해와 교류의 수단일 뿐 아니라 삽도를 통하여 시각적으로 재배치하여 보는 이의 시각을 기획하고 표상해내는 역할을 하였다. 그 결과 그 의미있는 도상들이 자연적 존재로 간주되면서 “만들어진 전통”에 위치하거나 “영원한 현재”로 표상되곤 하였다. 더욱이 이것은 개항직후 생성된 근대적 제도와 시설 속에서 만들어진 인쇄물이기 때문에, 지적 교양의 일반화를 실현시키는데 일조하였으며, 이는 곧 근대성을 지향하는 것으로 평가되어왔다.
그러나 본 논문에서는 기산 김준근 필 『텬로력뎡』 삽도가 첫째, 선교사들이 조선에서의 선교의 당위성을 시각이미지로 쉽게 전달하여 기독교인으로 전도하기 위해 그려진 삽도임에도 불구하고 삽도 속 조선인들은 이미 기독교인이 되어 있거나 또는 반드시 기독교인이 될 수밖에 없다는 전제를 만들어 놓고 출발한 점. 둘째, 기독교인으로서의 내면과 영혼의 진전 상태를 표현함에 있어서 조선사회의 신분상승의 구조 과정으로 이미지화하고 있는 것. 셋째, 삽도 속 등장인물들이 전반적으로 보여주고 있는 무표정과 무관심. 넷째, 시선의 방향과 경직되고 활기없는 움직임. 다섯째, 가늘고 거의 변화가 없는 철선묘를 주로 사용한 기법상의 특징 등에 담긴 복합적인 시선에 주목하였다.
그 결과 『텬로력뎡』삽도는, 선교사들이 카메라와 같은 기산 김준근의 손을 통하여 토착화된 조선풍 크리스천의 이미지를 만들어내었고 그것을 토착화라는 명목으로 안심시키면서 우리들의 내면을 세뇌화시켜 기독교라는 외부의 권력에 은연 중에 복종하게 만드는 역할을 한 것이다.
그러나 이러한 이미지를 결국은 토착민 우리들 스스로, 기산 김준근이라는 화가의 대표적인 손에 의해서 탄생되었다는 것이 문제이다. 왜냐하면 근대적 시각 체계의 주도권을 우리들 스스로가 갖지 못함으로써 타자에 의해 재현된 이미지가 우리들 안으로 그대로 내면화됨으로써 우리 스스로 우리의 모습을 타자화한다는 데 있다. 따라서 한국 근대 기독교미술에 나타난 토착화 현상의 시원이라 일컬어지는 기산 김준근 필 『텬로력뎡』은 기산 김준근의 개인적 표현의 결과라기보다는 자율적 수용과 타율적 수용의 맥락에서 매우 복합적이면서 혼재된 양상으로 다뤄지는 것이 타당할 것이다. 더불어 이같은 맥락에서 토착화된 한국 근대 기독교미술의 정체성에 관한 문제를 검증할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

The purpose of the paper was to analyze implications implied in images of Christian art naturalized in Korean modern times in the process that Christianity was accepted in the age of civilization in the late 19th century.
The research scope included 42 illustrations of the first Korean version of The Pilgrim`s Progress' illustrations by Gisan Kim Jun-geun, which were portrayed as naturalized images in the process of translating an English novel, the Pilgrim's Progress by a missionary, Gale(James Scarth Gale, 1863-1937) in 1895.
The first Korean version of The Pilgrim`s Progress' illustrations by Gisan Kim Jun-geun not only was a means to get knowledge and information on the Christian gospel and to understand and exchange each other between nations as a medium of communication but also played a role in designing and representing viewers' perspectives relocating them visually through the illustrations. As a result, as significant images were considered to be natural beings, they were located in “tradition made up" or represented as “eternal present” as well. Moreover, since it was a printed matter made in modern systems and facilities produced immediately after opening ports, it had been evaluated that it had contributed to realize universalization of intellectual culture, and that it had pursued the very modernity.
However, the paper paid attention to the following issues: Firstly, the first Korean version of The Pilgrim`s Progress' illustrations by Gisan Kim Jun-geun got started based on a premise that Koreans in the illustrations had already become Christians or that they could not help becoming Christians although they were illustrations portrayed in order to evangelize make Koreans into Christians by missionaries delivering easily the appropriateness of mission work in Chosun(Korea) through visual images. Secondly, when expressing the development state of their inner side and souls as Christians, they were treated as images of the structural process of a better social status in Chosun society. Thirdly, lack of facial expressions as well as indifference displayed generally by characters in the illustrations. Fourthly, direction of their vision and stiff and lifeless movements. Fifthly, complicated vision etc. contained in characteristics of techniques mainly employing description of wires which were thin and has few changes.
As a result, for illustrations of The Pilgrim`s Progress, missionaries made Chosun-style Christian images naturalized by hands of Gisan Kim Jun-geun like cameras, and they played a role to make the Koreans to obey foreign power called Christianity without knowing it by brainwashing Korean inner world easing our minds under the name of its naturalization.
However, it was a problem that these images were eventually born by ourselves, natives, by hands of a typical artist, Gisan Kim Jun-geun: The one's images became the others' images by ourselves as images reproduced by others were internalized into us as they were because we were not able to have leading position of modern visual system. Accordingly, it will be appropriate to treat the first Korean version of The Pilgrim`s Progress' illustrations by Gisan Kim Jun-geun which was called as the origin of naturalization phenomena in Korean modern Christian art as very complicated and mixed features in the context of voluntary and involuntary acceptance rather than a result of individual expression by Gisan Kim Jun-geun. In addition, it would be possible to verify a question of identity of Korean modern Christian art naturalized in this context.
