조선초기 儀禮 제정과 犧尊·象尊의 역사적 의미 (The Ritual enactments in the Early Joseon Dynasty and historical meaning of the Huijun․Sangjun)

초록

이 논문은 조선초기 국가 의례서인 『세종실록』 「오례·길례서례」와 『국조오례의서례』 「길례」에 보이는 ‘제기도설’의 비교, 검토를 통해 의례 제정의 변화양상을 고찰하였다. 지금까지 역사학에서 간과해온 제기를 통해 조선초기 의례 제정의 양상과 특징을 밝혀본 것이다. 조선초기 길례 제정의 변화과정과 원인에 따라 제기도설의 희준과 상준의 두 가지 형태는 다음과 같은 특징을 보인다. 『세종실록』 「오례」에서는 ‘깊은바리모양’을, 『국조오례의서례』에서는 ‘짐승모양’이라는 각기 다른 형태를 보이고 있다. 이 형태를 중국의 예서와 비교해보면 깊은바리모양은 ‘당․송제’, 짐승모양은 ‘명나라 예제’에서 영향을 받았다는 것을 알 수 있다. 또한 각각의 모양에는 ‘정현’의 설, ‘왕숙’의 이론이 반영되어 있다. 이렇게 정현과 왕숙의 설로 대표되는 제기도설의 변화양상을 크게 사상적 경향성과 정치적 배경 안에서 살펴보았다.
사상적 경향성에 대해서는 정현과 왕숙의 문묘종사의 추이를 통해 성리학자들의 인식을 가늠해보았다. 이 문묘종사에서는 조선초기에 정현과 왕숙의 이론이 모두 통용되고 있었다. 이러한 배경을 바탕으로 제기도설의 변화를 파악해 보았다. 그것은 곧 주자성리학의 수용과정에서 이해할 수 있는 부분이다. 주자가 왕숙의 이론을 선택하였기 때문에 그것이 『국조오례의』에 반영되었던 것이다. 결국, 『세종실록』 「오례」에서 『국조오례의』로 정비되면서 주자성리학의 이해가 진전을 이루었다고 할 수 있다.
다음으로 정치적 배경에 대해 살펴보았다. 이것은 “주자가 왜 왕숙의 설을 따랐을까?”라는 의문에 대한 해결 방안이기도 하다. 이와 같은 모색은 의례의 정치적 활용이라는 관점에서 출발한다. 찬탈과 무력으로 왕위를 계승한 당고조와 당태종은 정현의 설을 부정하는 왕숙의 설로써 정당성을 갖고자 하였다. 이러한 의례 제정의 활용이 조선에서도 재현되었다고 한다면 국가의례란 분명 왕의 권위를 높여주는 정치적 도구이다.

영어초록

This study seeks to provide a comparative understanding of the aspects of changes that were evident in the ritual enactments of the Jegi doseol(Explanatory Diagrams of Ritual vessels) appearing in such texts on national rituals of the Early Joseon as the Orye of the Sejong sillok Gillye Seorye and Gukjooryeui seorye Gillye. An anlysis of the causes as well as changes that appeared in the enactments of the Royal Ancestral rites revals that the two forms of Huijin and Sangjun. They revealed different shapes from each other with the Orye of the Sejong sillok describing deep-bowl shapes whereas the Gukjooryeui seorye illustrate animal shapes. By comparing the two forms with the ritual books of China, it is possible to know that the deep-bowl shapes were influenced by the rituals of the Tang and Song Dynasties whereas animals shapes by the rituals of the Ming dynasty.
The deep-bowl shaped Huijun and Sangjun, painted with cattle and elephants patterns, is based on the theory of Zheng Xuan while the animal shaped Huijun and Sangjun, with entire bowls sculpted in the exact images of cattle and elephants, is based on the theory of Wang Su. Thus, the aspects of change of the Jegi doseol were examined within the framework of the ideological tendencies and the political background.
With regard to the ideological trend, an attempt was made to determine the perceptions of neo-Confucian scholars, through an examination of the doctrines on memorial services formulated by such scholars as Zhen Xuan and Wang Su. The theories of both the scholars, Zhen Xuan and Wang Su were accepted in the Confucian shrine memorial services during the Early Joseon Dynasty. Based on these perceptions, an attempt was made to recognize the changes in the Jegi doseol. Since Zhu Xi selected the theory of Wang Su, his (Wang Su's) ideas were reflected in the Gukjooryeui.
Next, the political background was examined. The political background offers a solution to the question of why Zhu Xi adhered to the theory of Wang Su. The knowledge of the fact that the rituals were used politically was carried over and applied to the Joseon Dynasty in this study.
Taizong and Gaozu of Tang China who ascended to the thronion of powere through the brazen use of force, sought to legitimize his usurpation, and it is remarkable that he rejected the theory of Zhen Xuan and favourd the ideas of Wang Su.
