사진과 죽음의 수사: 바르트 사진론 다시 읽기 (Photography and the Rhetoric of Death: Re-reading the Barthes' Theory of Photography)

초록

이 논문의 목적은 죽음의 수사를 중심으로 사진의 정체성을 모색하는 것이다. 즉 사진이란 무엇인가에 대해 논함에 있어서 본 논문은 삶과 죽음, 흐름과 정지, 현존과 부재 같은 시간적 계기들에 주목하고 있다는 것이다. 롤랑 바르트의 사진지표론은 이러한 논의의 뼈대를 이루고 있으며, 특히 그의 푼크툼 개념은 전체 논의의 핵심이 되고 있다.
바르트의 푼크툼은 “보는 이를 찌르고 충격을 주는 사진의 세부사항”이기도 하고, “살아있는 듯 보이지만 이미 죽은 것의 귀환”이기도 하다. 이 논문에서는 후자의 시간의 혼동으로서의 푼크툼에 주목하고, 바르트의 푼크툼과 프로이트의 언캐니 개념을 결합시킨다. 어떤 사물이 죽은 것인지 아니면 살아 있는 것인지에 대한 혼동으로부터 초래되는 언캐니의 감정은 바르트가 푼크툼으로 기술한 충격과 거의 동일하기 때문이다.
푼크툼과 언캐니를 중심으로 사진의 시간성에 대해 고찰한 후, 본 논문에서는 프란체스카 우드먼과 방병상의 사진작품에 나타나는 사진적 시간에 대해 살펴보고 있다.

영어초록

This paper aims to explore the paradoxical way that photographs represent the time: life/death, moment/eternity, movement/stillness, present/absent and etc. In the pursuit of this purpose, it would be focused that the photography is a kind of ‘index’ according to Charles S. Peirce's definition, and that the indexical properties of photography reminds ‘the uncanny’ Freud mentioned. I mainly discuss here the theory of photography provided by Roland Barthes, since he seems one of the advocates of ‘photo-index theory.’Barthes develops more earnestly photo-index theory in his Camera Lucida(1981) among his writings of photography. When he mentions indexical features of photography he is focusing on the concept of ‘punctum.’ While he has started his writing with the punctum which was the detail of a photograph that stab or prick the viewer, he changes the concept of punctum from the detail to the time in the last half of the book. The photograph which has recorded the past, specially the dead reminded him the death - even his own future death, because it seems alive even though it is already dead.
According to Freud, when we encounter something or somebody which is not distinguished if alive or not, we feel the uncanniness. A photograph is uncanny because the referent of it seems present and alive but it is actually absent and dead. In this respect Laura Mulvey and others connect Barthes' indexical theory of photography with ‘the uncanny’ of Freud which reminds us the fear of death.
I consider this paradoxical sense of time appearing at the photographs originated from the indexical properties of photography. In order to prove this special feature of photography, I discuss some photographs of Francesca Woodman and Byung-Sang Bang.
