「혈죽가」 소고 (Study of 「Hyeoljukga」)

초록

「혈죽가」가 현대 시조 효시로 보는 견해가 있다. 견해는 상당하는 논증이 있을 때 비로소 설득력을 갖게 된다. 그렇지 않으면 문제를 야기할 수 있으며 그것이 정설처럼 굳어지면 시조의 정체성에 혼란을 줄 수 있다.
한국시조시인협회는 2006년에 「혈죽가」를 현대시조의 효시로 보고 ‘현대시조 100주년’ 기념 행사를 치루었다. 이 작품이 현대시조의 효시로 볼 수 없다면 공식 행사는 아무런 의미가 없을 것이다. 천여년의 시조 전통에 하나의 오점을 남길 수 있기 때문이다.
본고는 이 「혈죽가」가 현대시조의 효시로 볼 수 없다는 견해를 제시한 논문이다. 이를 증명하는 데에 본고의 목적이 있다.
현대 시조의 효시가 되려면 현대시조의 특성이 얼마간이라도 검출되어야하는데 「혈죽가」는 이에서 거리가 멀다.
「혈죽가」는 개화기 시조로 보는 것이 일반적인 견해이다. 이 작품이 현대 시조의 효시라면 고시조, 개화기 시조, 현대 시조의 특징 중 어느 쪽에 위치해 있는가를 검토해보면 알 수 있을 것이다.
본고는 이의 부합 정도를 종장 셋째 음보의 주제어로의 끝맺음, 종장 넷째 음보의 제거, 초․중․종장의 행배열이 없는 한 줄 글, 「혈죽가」 제목의 ‘ ∼歌’, 한자 투어와 고투어, 연작 시조, ‘위국충절’ 노래, 제목의 유무, 작가의 실명 유무, 인쇄 매체의 유무, 고어표기 등 11가지 측면에서 검토해보았다.
11개 항 중 7개 항은 현대시조의 특징이 검출되지 않았다. 나머지 4개항은 고시조, 현대시조에서 공히 나타나고 있으며, 그 중 2개항은 개화기 시조, 현대시조에서 공히 나타나고 있다.
그렇게 본다면 「혈죽가」는 현대 시조의 효시라고 볼 수 있는 대목이 하나도 존재하지 않는다. 오히려 「혈죽가」는 고시조와 더 가깝게 위치해있다고 보아야 한다.
현대시조는 내용면에서 적어도 보편적 질서를 통한 개인적 질서의 획득, 개인적 질서를 통한 보편적 질서가 구현되어져야 한다. 「혈죽가」는 형식은 차치하더라도 이러한 현대적인 특징을 찾을 수가 없다. 현대시조의 효시 작품은 「혈죽가」이후나 1920년대 들어와서야 찾아보는 것이 타당하다고 판단된다.
증명되지도 않고 일반화되어 있지도 않은 작품을 명분도 없이 기념 행사를 치룬다는 것은 시조 정체성에 심각한 문제가 될 수 있다. 현대시조의 출발점은 학계에서나 시조계에서 충분한 토론을 거친 뒤 일반화 되었을 때 비로소 생각해보아야 할 문제라고 사료된다.

영어초록

There is a view that regard 「Hyeoljukga」 as the precursor of modern sijo. A view becomes persuasive only when there are proper proofs. If not, it can cause a problem and cause confusion to the identity of sijo when it becomes established as though it is a widely-accepted theory.
Korea Association of Sijo Poets held an event in commemoration of the '100th Anniversary of Modern Sijo' in 2006, officially taking the view that accepts 「Hyeoljukga」 as the precursor of modern sijo. If this poem is not regarded as the precurosr of modern poem, the official event would not have any meaning for it can stain the thousand-year-long tradition of the sijo.
This study suggests the view that this 「Hyeoljukga」 cannot be regarded as the precursor of modern sijo. The objective of this study is to prove this point.
To become the precursor of modern poem, the sijo must manifest the characteristics of modern sijo even for a certain period of time, however, 「Hyeoljukga」 does not.
The general view is that 「Hyeoljukga」 is the sijo from the time of enlightenment at the end of the 19th century. It would be possible to discern whether this is truly the precursor of modern sijo by examining if its characteristics belong to ancient sijo, sijo of the enlightenment period, or modern sijo.
This study reviewed whether it is appropriate to regard 「Hyeoljukga」 as the precursor by 11 aspects such as the ending of the third metre in the last verse into the theme word, elimination of the fourth metre in the last verse, single-line poem without the layout of first, second, and last verses, '∼ga' in the title 「Hyeoljukga」, Chinese style word and old style word, series sijo, song about 'serving the country and the loyalty', whether it has a title or not, whether the name of the poet is real or not, whether the poem is printed or not, the notation of old words.
7 out of 11 aspects did not manifest the characteristics of modern sijo. The rest, the 4 aspects showed the characteristics of ancient sijo and modern sijo, and 2 out of 4 are regarded as the characteristics appearing in the sijo written during the time of enlightenment and modern sijo.
In other words, 「Hyeoljukga」does not have any characteristics that can be regarded as the precursor of modern sijo. Rather, 「Hyeoljukga」 is closer to the ancient sijo.
A modern sijo must acquire individual order through universal order and realize the universal order through individual order at least in the aspect of the contents.「Hyeoljukga」does not have these modernistic characteristics not to mention the format. It would be appropriate to look for the precursor of modern sijo after 「Hyeoljukga」 or among those written in the 1920's.
Holding a commemorative event for a poem that is not verified nor generalized can be a serious issue for the identity of sijo. The starting point of modern sijo shall be dealt with only after it became generalized through sufficient discussions in the academic or sijo circles.
