초록

계동학교는 연해주 이주한인들에 의하여 1907년 2월 설립되었다. 주도한 인물은 최재형ㆍ이동국ㆍ김학만ㆍ최봉준ㆍ한익성ㆍ차석보 등이었다. 한인들 적극적인 참여와 임원진의 열성적인 지원 등은 교육내실화를 도모하는 밑거름이나 마찬가지였다. 학교 건축은 주민들 ‘의무금’으로 충당되었다. 미주에서 발행된 공립신보사 연해주지국은 계동학교였다.
교과목은 한글ㆍ한문ㆍ습자ㆍ산술ㆍ수신ㆍ한국지리ㆍ한국역사ㆍ체조ㆍ노어 등이었다. 한글은 민족의식을 고취시키는 유효한 방안으로 매우 중시되었다. 한국역사와 한국지리 교육도 중시된 과목 중 하나였다. 창가는 학교생활이나 과외활동 여가에 일상적으로 불렀다. 항일사상 고취와 신한국 독립정신 배양은 궁극적인 교육목표였다. 여성교육 시행에도 선구적인 역할을 자임하고 나섰다.
정기적인 토론회 개최는 국권회복을 위한 다양한 방안을 강구하는 학습현장이었다. 주제는 「지혜가 자본보다 승하다」ㆍ「군사를 기르는 것이 금전을 많이 짓기만 못하다」 등 매우 다양했다. 독립국가를 유지하는 근본적인 방책은 군사양성과 자본육성이었다.
1909년 개최된 연합운동회는 한인사회 초유의 대사건임에 틀림없다. 인산인해를 이룬 광경은 가슴 벅찬 환희로서 다가왔다. 상호간 유대감을 결속시키는 동시에 국내외 정세에 대한 정보를 교류하는 현장은 바로 운동회였다. 이들은 즉석에서 연설회나 강연회 개최로 잠재된 민족의식을 각성시켰다. 군사훈련에 버금가는 체조는 체력을 증진하는 동시에 인내력과 정신력을 배양시켰다.
계동학교는 ‘단순한’ 초등교육기관에만 머물지 않았다. 민족의식을 일깨우는 한편 상무정신 고취를 위한 설립이념에 따라 교과목을 편성했다. 학교 현관 정면과 각 교실 안에는 ‘태극’ 원안을 새겨 넣었다. 교과서는 배일사상과 국권회복에 관한 내용이 대부분이었다. 전명운과 안중근 유가족에 대한 후원 등 시대적인 소명에 소홀하지 않았다. 민족교육이 지닌 역사적인 의의는 여기에서 찾아진다.

영어초록

The Gyedong School was established by Korean diasporas’ migration in February 1907. In that process, Choi JaeHyung, Lee dongkuk, Kim Hakman, Choi Bongjun, Han Ikseon and Cha Seokbo played the important roles. The active participation of Koreans and committed support of executives were the foundation for advancement of education. The costs of building school were covered by funds of residents. The Primorskiy branch of GonnipShinbo press company published in America was the Gyedong School.
There were various curriculum subjects, such as Korean, Chinese, calligraphy, arithmetic, moral training, Korean geography, Korean history, gymnastics and the Russian language. The education of Korean language attached great importance as the effective way to inspire the national consciousness and education of Korean history and geography ditto. They sang the Changga daily both in their school life and extra-curricular activities. The inspiration of anti-Japanese sentiments and the development of the spirit of independence of Korea was the ultimate objectives of Gyedong School. They looked upon themselves as pioneer in women’s education.
The panel discussion opened on a regular basis was a studying scene to devise the various methods for restoring national right. The subjects were various, such as ‘Wisdom is more worth than capital’ and ‘Raising the military cannot hold a candle to building a lot of money’. The fundamental way to maintain the nationhood was the training of army and promoting of capital.
The united field day held in 1909 must be an unheard-of event of Korean diaspora. A big crowd was gathered in the schoolyard. It was the field day that strengthened the Korean solidarity and exchanged the information for the internal and external situations. The gymnastics was second to military training developed the patience and willpower as well as enhancing their physical strength.
The Gyedong Shcool was more than just elementary school. The subjects were organized according to idea of establishment for inspiring the martialism and awakening the national consciousness. The original design of Taegeuk was engraved in front-door and each classroom. The most contents of textbook were the anti-Japanese thought and recovering the sovereignty of a nation. And they supported the family of the deceased, Jeon MyeongWoon and Ahn ChungGuen. In this, there were great historical significance of national education.
