This dissertation aims to investigate the whole aspect of Kyung-ri Park 's works of literature from her earlier short story to her historical novel The Land (1969-1994), and it focuses in particular on her characters' attitudes toward 'value.' The characters' attitudes toward value in Kyung-ri Park's novels are divided into three cases: the loss of values, the absolutizing of values and the relativizing of values I demonstrate the aspects of characterization by focusing on the characters' identity and guilt consciousness, which vary according to each character's attitudes to value, and on the writer's view of reality and characters' response modality to reality in each case In addition, I observe the characteristics of content and form that are revealed when the values are relativized. I call these characteristics the 'aesthetics of bending.'
Through these discussions, I can reveal the whole aspect of Kyung-ri Park's literature, which shows 'conpositive' development phases. In Par가 Kyung-ri Park's novels, characters that lose values, characters that absolutize values and characters that relativize values generally coexist. First of all, through the fact that the first type of characters and the second type of characters coexist, I conclued that realism and romanticism are mixed in Kyung-ri Park's literature. Moreover, the fact that the second and third type of characters coexist reveals that a life-theory, which is an important idea of Kyung-ri Park, competes with an anti-life-theory. Worth noting further is the fact that when I investigate Park novels change from the second type to the third one while the first type characters consistently appear in all the works. Therefore, I conclude that Kyung-ri Park's literature progresses from romanticism toward realism and from anti=life-theory toward life-theory. I also regard The Dislocation (1974) as her transitional work.
This thesis deals with the problems of identity and guilt consciousness in characters who loss values. Value loss means that important values such as family, love and ideology are regarded as exchangeable through the mediation of exchange-value. The characters that lose values adhere to materialism. I explain the aspects of value loss through mediation of interest and sexuality. The former is divided into family property pillage caused by desire for possessions. ideological positions based on benefits, human relations based on exchange-value and instrumental relations for ambition. In each case, the characters take an lost attitude to such values as family. ideology, love and human dignity, with the consequence that the familial ideological moral and social identities of these characters are left in critical condition. Furthermore, I discuss the loss of values through mediations of sexuality, which are homological with the nature loss of money. This loss can be demonstrated through the narrative of incestuous love and adultery that is reiterated in Kyung-ri Park's novels and also brings about the crisis of the characters that loss values dominated by instinct(sexuality) indirect human relations are harrowed with feelings of guilt, the characters that lose values through the mediation of material desire do not awaken their guilty feelings. I am able to grasp the writer's criticism of this reality based on the capitalistic human understnading.
