    초록

Small group models have been popular among churches in Korea for the last several decades. Various small group activities in a church context have been effective for bible study, counseling related to faith and spirituality, and fellowship. However those small group models have not been able to fulfill participants’ needs and desires for dealing with psychological struggles and sufferings and deeper spiritual formation with long-term effects. Thus, this article will aim at developing and providing an effective small group model that which will concern both psychological growth and spiritual discipline.
In order to develop an effective small group model, I have attentively examined John Wesley’s theology and the small group model that has been developed and practiced in the 18th century. By examining Wesley’s theology in more detail, we will be focusing on Wesley’s perspective on 1) therapeutic and developmental concerns, 2) human development theory, 3) a unique understanding of divine grace, 4) comprehensive changes in cognition/emotion/behavior, 5) principles of mutual accountability in the household of God, and lastly 6) innovative small group models such as class meetings and band meetings. God’s grace, along with “jeong” which can be defined as a unique Korean emotional experience, can play a crucial role as a major source of energy for psychological and spiritual growth in a small group setting.
By adapting and using covenant discipleship(CD) group model developed by David L. Watson, which became a popular model for behavioral change and spiritual formation during the 1980’s and 1990’s in the United Methodist Church, we can create a new competent, imaginative, trustworthy group model for both group psychotherapy and spiritual discipline in the context of Korean Church. Although the underlying theology for this new group model comes from Wesleyan tradition, I believe this new revised model can be a powerful source for Korean Christians regardless of any denominations and affiliations.
Lastly, this model aims at a comprehensive change in cognition, emotion, and behavior of each participant, as well as properly dealing with psychological issues and problems in a safe environment.
