존 웨슬리의 설교와 주석에 나타난 성서 해석의 실천적 원리와 실제에 대한 고찰 (A Study on the Practical Principles of John Wesley’s Biblical Interpretation and Their Application in His Sermon and Exegesis)

초록

이 연구는 존 웨슬리의 설교와 주석서에 나타난 성서 해석 원리와 실제에 관한 것이다. 웨슬리는 네 가지 해석 원리, 곧 성서, 이성, 체험, 전통에 의거하여 성서를 해석했다. 지금까지 국내의 많은 연구는 이 네 가지 원리에 관한 논의는 있었지만, 이 원리가 성서 본문에 어떻게 반영되어 있는지에 관하여 웨슬리의 설교문과 신구약 주해서를 통해 실제적으로 보여주지 못했다. 이 연구는 웨슬리가 구약성서와 신약성서 해석에 이 원리들을 실제로 어떻게 적용했는지를 분석하고자 한다. 이 점은 이 연구의 의의를 말해준다. 웨슬리의 글 속에서 나타난 성서 해석 원리는 다음과 같다.
웨슬리의 첫 번째 성서 해석 원리는 해석에 있어 성서 자체를 가장 중요시 한다는 데 있다. 성서 자체에 근거한 해석은 성서의 다른 본문과 모순되지 않으면 문자 그대로의 의미를 존중하면서 성서를 성서에 근거하여 해석할 뿐만 아니라 의미의 왜곡을 방지하기 위하여 문맥에 의거하여 해석하는 것을 뜻한다. 두 번째 해석 원리는 난해한 본문이나 다른 본문과 일관성이 없는 본문을 해석할 경우에 이성을 사용하는 것을 말한다. 비교‧평가의 방법을 사용하여 모순되는 본문의 뜻을 조화시키는 방법이다. 해석의 세 번째 원리는 체험을 사용하는 것을 말한다. 성서의 진리는 체험을 통해 확인되어야 한다고 보기 때문이다. 네 번째 원리는 전통에 근거하여 해석하는 것을 말한다. 초대 교회 교부의 글과 같이 영감과 권위를 지닌 고대의 저작을 고증하고 자신의 해석과 비교함으로써 난해한 본문의 의미를 찾는 것을 말한다.
앞에서 보았듯이, 웨슬리는 성서를 가장 중요한 성서 해석의 원리로 여겼다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 어려운 구절이나 다른 구절과 모순이 되는 구절이 있으면, 이성과 체험과 전통과 같은 해석 원리를 통해 보완하였다. 이 과정에서 웨슬리가 모순되는 부분을 자의적인 해설‧첨가를 통해서 해결하려 한 점은 경계해야 한다. 그러나 웨슬리가 보여준 네 가지 핵심 해석 원리는 성서 해석은 임의적으로 해서는 안 되며 원리적 토대를 분명히 해야 함을 잘 보여준다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to explore John Wesley’s principles of biblical interpretation and their practical application. Wesley interpreted Scripture based on the Wesleyan Quadrilateral like Scripture, reason, experience, and tradition. But many studies in Korea have not yet shown concretely how the four principles can be applied to Scripture. This study attempts to analyze how Wesley actually applies the principles to the interpretation of the Old Testament as well as the New Testament.
First, Wesley stressed the exploration of Scripture itself in interpreting Scripture. His exploration of Scripture can be grasped in three-fold dimensions. Scripture should be interpreted literally, if it be not contrary to some other texts. Scripture should also be interpreted according to Scripture, which Wesley calls the “analogy of faith.” In addition, scripture should be interpreted according to its context, so that the meaning of Scripture may not be easily perverted. The second principle of the Wesleyan Quadrilateral is to employ reason in interpreting Scripture. It contributes to preventing unchecked interpretation of Scripture through the rational comparison and evaluation of passages. The third principle of interpretation is to use experience. It refers to the importance of inner witness to the truth of interpretation. Wesley thought that the truth of the Scripture should not remain merely a process of thinking but be examined by experience in life. The fourth principle of interpretation is to use tradition. It refers to the inspired ancient writings like those of Church Fathers. Wesley found their writings helpful in clarifying difficult or vague passages.
Wesley considered Scripture as the most important principle of interpretation. Nevertheless, he valued reason, experience, and tradition, below the authority of Scripture, in interpreting difficult and doubtful passages. The four principles of interpretation proposed by Wesley is still useful in preventing all manners of arbitrary interpretation of Scripture. While we put a high value on Wesley’s effort to interpret Scripture accurately, however, we should be wary of his deliberate insertion of words in interpreting difficult or doubtful passages.
