조선후기·근대의 宗名과 宗祖 인식의 역사적 고찰 －曹溪宗과 太古法統의 결연－ (A Historical Consideration on Buddhist School Name and Founder in the Late Joseon Dynasty and Modern Age －The Affiliation between Jogye School and Taego Legitimate Origin－)

초록

본 논문은 조선후기에서 근대까지의 宗名 변천과 宗祖 인식을 역사적으로 고찰한 것이다. 종명과 종조는 한국불교의 정체성 및 역사적 정통성과 직결되는문제이다. 본고에서는 먼저 조선후기 臨濟太古法統의 성립과 계승 문제를 살펴보았고 이어 근대에 대두한 종명과 종조를 둘러싼 전통 인식을 검토하였다. 17세기전반 임제태고법통이 성립된 후 太古 普愚는 법통상의 조사로 부상하였고 조선후기와 근대를 거치면서 역사적 권위를 획득하였다. 20세기에 들어 圓宗, 臨濟宗,禪敎兩宗, 曹溪宗 등 여러 종명이 변천을 거듭하였고 태고 보우, 普照 知訥 등종조에 대한 다양한 논의가 펼쳐졌는데, 그 결과 한국불교의 대표 종명은 조계종으로 확정되었고 禪宗, 조계종, 임제법통을 각각 상징하는 조사들이 종조로 선정되었다. 즉 조계종의 開祖는 신라의 道義, 中興祖의 반열에 고려의 보조 지눌과태고 보우가 들어가게 되었다. 이처럼 종조의 조합은 조선후기의 역사상과 근대의 전통인식에 의해 형성된 것으로 이는 조계종 전통과 태고법통의 역사성이 결합된 통시적, 복합적 구조였다.
조계종의 역사적 정체성은 看話禪 일변도의 선종 우월주의가 아닌 定慧兼修와禪敎융통에서 찾아야 하며 조선후기에도 선교겸수의 지향과 교학 중시 경향이강하게 나타났다. 따라서 조계종 전통을 온전히 되살리고 한국불교의 올바른 방향성을 추구하기 위해서는, 선 뿐 아니라 교학과 念佛 등 다양한 전통을 재발견하고 정체성을 새롭게 모색할 필요가 있다. 즉 선과 교를 아우르는 통합적 역사인식과 새로운 전통 창출의 부단한 노력이 요구되는 것이다. 이를 위해 고려와 근현대를 잇는 가교로서 조선시대 불교의 실상과 정체를 파악하고 그것을 비판적으로재조명하는 인식의 전환이 필요하다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to consider the change of school name and the recognition of school founder from the late Joseon Dynasty to the modern age historically. School name and founder are the issues, which are directly connected to identity of Korean Buddhism and historical legitimacy. Firstly, the study surveyed the foundation of 'Imje Taego legitimate origin'(臨濟太古法統) in the late Joseon dynasty and its succession and then reviewed the school name, which appeared in the modern age and its traditional recognition around the school founder. After Imje Taego legitimate origin was founded in the 17th century, Taego Bowu(太古 普愚) rose as a patriarch of the legitimate origin and acquired the historical authority over the late Joseon dynasty and the modern age. In the 20th century, various school names such as Won School(圓宗), Imje School(臨濟宗), Seon & Doctrinal School(禪敎兩宗)and Jogye School(曹溪宗) repeated their changes and there were various discussions over school founders such as Taego Bowu and Bojo Jinul(普照知訥). As a result, the representative school of Korean Buddhism was confirmed as Jogye School and the patriarches representing Seon School(禪宗), Jogye School and Imje School were selected as school founders respectively. In other words, it was confirmed that the founder of Jogye School is Doui(道義) of Silla and its successors are Bojo Jinul and Taego Bowu of Goryeo. Like that, the combination of founders were formed by historical situation of the late Joseon dynasty and tradition recognition of the modern age, which is a dischronic, complex structure combining the tradition of Jogye School and history of Taego legitimate origin.
The historical identity of Jogye School shall be found in the ‘cultivation of both doctrinal study and contemplative exercise’(定慧兼修) and ‘accommodation between seon and doctrinal school’(禪敎融通) and rather than Seon School chauvinism biased to Ganhwa practice(看話禪). Also, in the late Joseon dynasty, the trend to search for ‘pursuing both Zen and non－Zen’(禪敎兼修) and give priority to doctrine appeared strongly. Therefore, it is necessary to rediscover various traditions such as doctrine(敎學) and recitation(念佛) as well as seon and search for identity in a new manner in order to recover the tradition of Jogye School and search for the right direction of Korean Buddhism. In other words, the effort to create the synthetic history recognition covering Seon and Doctrine and new tradition is required. For the purpose, it is necessary to grasp actual status and identity of Joseon Buddhism as a bridge to connect Goryeo age to modern & present age and transfer recognition to illuminate it critically again.
