초록

공지영의 소설 『우리들의 행복한 시간』은 2005년 4월 푸른숲 출판사에서 초판이 발행된 이후 100쇄를 넘기고, 영화화될 만큼 대중적으로 성공한 작품이다. 공지영의 『우리들의 행복한 시간』은 극복할 수 없는 장애물 너머에 있는 두 남녀의사랑을 그린 전형적 멜로드라마에 해당한다. 한편 이 작품은 두 남녀의 사랑 이야기라는 멜로드라마의 스테레오 타입을 비육체적인 사랑, 인류애적 결합, 사회적 모순의 고발로 확장했다는 평가를 받기도 했다. 휴먼 멜로라는 호명은 그런 의미에서, 관습에 대한 전복의 평가라고 볼 수 있다. 만약, 평가처럼 멜로로드라마의 관습을 벗어났다면 사회적 관습과 이데올로기적 모순에 대한 깊이 있는 분석을 전제로한다. 당대 사회적 모순에 대한 반성이 없다면 좌절된 사랑을 위한 장애물의 대체일 뿐이다. 그렇다면 휴먼 멜로라는 호칭은 상업적 차별화 전략에 불과하다.
이런 맥락에서 우선 대중적 흡입력의 원동력인 서술전략과 기법을 살펴보았다.
『우리들의 행복한 시간』의 주인공은 사형수와 상습적 자살미수자이다. 두 사람 모두 일차적 성격으로는 독자의 호응을 얻기 힘든 유형이라고 할 수 있다. 그러나 내포작가는 정교한 서술전략과 기법을 통해 비호감 인물들의 서술에 공감하도록 유도한다. 사형수 정윤수는 <블루노트>라는 일기로 삶을 고백하고 참회하며 잔혹한범죄자에서 내면을 가진 개인으로 바뀌어 간다. 한편, 주서술자인 문유정은 그런정윤수를 난폭한 살인마로 멀리하다가 점점 이해하고, 다가가고, 급기야 사랑한다.
유아적이며 이기적인 문유정은 사형수 정윤수에 대한 독자들의 반감과 거리감을조율해 준다. 냉소적인 서술자가 역설적으로 독자의 적극적 감정이입을 촉발하는것이다.
3장에서는 멜로드라마적 관습이 텍스트에서 어떻게 표면화되고, 서브텍스트를통해 어떻게 강화되는 지를 살펴보았다. 『우리들의 행복한 시간』의 텍스트는 빈부격차, 가정폭력, 아동학대 등의 문제를 고발하고 있지만 서브텍스트 안에서 오히려그 모든 원흉을 어머니로 호명함으로써 불완전한 모성의 모성스캔들을 강화한다.
이러한 텍스트와 서브텍스트간의 충돌은 범죄자 정윤수는 사형당하고, 부유층인상습 자살 미수자 문유정은 삶의 소중함을 깨닫고 생존하는 결말에서도 발견된다.
하층 계급 범죄자를 희생양으로 삼아 상류계층의 여성이 건전한 사회인으로 성장하는 과정을 보여줌으로써 사회적 인습과 이데올로기적 구속을 강화하고 마는 것이다.
『우리들의 행복한 시간』은 서간체 서사, 고백, 선정적 사건과 피할 수 없는 죽음 등을 통해 독자들의 공감을 얻어내는 데 탁월한 서술 전략과 서사 구조를 가진소설이다. 대중적 성공은 그 탁월하고 세련된 전략에 대한 반응이라고 할 수 있다.
그러나, 강간, 살인, 자살, 가정 폭력, 사형과 같은 문제들을 소재적으로 활용하고만다는 점에서 선정적 소재주의라는 비판을 모면하기는 어렵다. 표면보다 심층적서사에서 이데올로기적 모순과 관습을 옹호하고 강화한다는 점에서 더욱 그렇다.
『우리들의 행복한 시간』을 인권에 대한 진지한 소설이라기보다 그것을 소재적으로 활용한 대중적 멜로드라마로 평가할 수밖에 없는 이유이다.

영어초록

『Our Happy Time』 is the first novel that has specificallymentioned the death penalty. First of all, in terms of havingachieved a huge success popularly, it can be said to be ofsignificance in that it has publicized the issue of judicial justicesuch as the death penalty. 『Our Happy Time』 enhances empathy byincreasing subjective empathy through the narration of confession,epistolary style and maintaining the sense of distance through theobjective and indifferent narrator who does not empathize with themain character Jeong Yoon-su. It causes much deeper empathythrough a very strategic narrative method.
Strictly speaking, however, it can be said that 『Our Happy Time』is a stereotype that follows the typical narrative structure ofmelodrama, which is a popular narrative. Due to the limitations ofthe narrative structure of melodrama, it is eventually defeated bythe dominant ideology of the time, so the defeat is often used as abasis for sensational sadness and pain, not as the beginning ofreflection and change. So is 『Our Happy Time』. On the surface, ittries to reveal the contradictions of the death penalty, but rather,the death penalty is used as a sensational material with the deathpenalty actually disappeared. This is also found by the fact that thesource of social evil is concentrated in the traditional ‘mother'srole’ bound to the traditional patriarchal society. This is because thefact that families and parents’ role environment can be attributed to criminals and the source of social evil reinforces the very oldideological prejudice that criminals are created in poor and brokenfamilies.
This shows the structural intervention of society that bothparenting and family’s economic minimum costs are solely theresponsibilities of the individual and subordination to modernideology that individual self-help is more important. The novel 『Our Happy Time』 condenses all social, structural andpolicy-critical issues into those of two persons and limits them tothe views of immature individuals who have been socially isolatedalmost like infants or children. In this respect, the death penalty isa sensational material chosen as an obstacle, which cannot butresult in death, and it is difficult to see it as a topic of in-depthnarratives chosen to seriously question symbolic order or law. 『Our Happy Time』 is a novel with an excellent narrativestrategy and narrative structure in obtaining readers' empathythrough epistolary narration, confession, sensational events andinevitable death etc. It means that popular success is not acoincidence. Because it uses a very precise strategy in narrative andits structure. Although it addresses issues such as rape, murder,suicide, domestic violence and death penalty, however, it is difficultto avoid criticism of sensational materialism in terms of using themas materials. Not only did it borrow a melodramatic narrativestructure on the surface, but in the deeper aspect it advocates thecurrent ideological contradiction and rather strengthens it. This iswhy 『Our Happy Time』 is evaluated as a typical popularmelodrama rather than a serious novel about human rights.
