曺植의 태극도와 그 性理學的 세계관 (Jo Sik's Diagram of Supreme Ultimate and Its Confucian World-view)

초록

본고는 조식의 성리학적 세계관의 이해를 위해 그의 學記類篇에 수록된 이른바 學記圖에 대한 도상학적 특징과 그 내용을 분석하고자 한다. 조식의 『學記類篇』은 24개의 도식인 학기도가 있으며 그중에서 태극도와 관련이 있고 易圖學의 특징을 보이는 도식으로 三才一太極圖와 太極與通書表裏圖가 있다. 특히 三才一太極圖는 우주론적 관점에서, 그리고 太極與通書表裏圖는 인성론적 관점에서 그려진 도식이다. 전자는 天人合一의 사상에 기초하여 만물의 생성과정을 우주론적 관점에서 설명하였고, 후자는 天人合一의 사상에 기초하여 인간의 본성회복을 인성론적 관점에서 설명하였다.
조식은 주돈이의 태극도를 토대로 하여 자신의 태극도를 그려 그 속에서 자신의 세계관을 담아내고 있다. 그 중에서 三才一太極圖에서는 만물생성과정을 설명한 태극도설의 내용을 우주론적 입장에서 재해석하고, 이어 太極與通書表裏圖에서는 주돈이의 태극도에 『통서』의 내용을 결합시킴으로써 성리학적 세계관의 본성회복을 위한 강령과 구조를 재구성해내고 있다. 이는 태극과 『通書』의 관계를 안과 밖 혹은 겉과 속과 같은 一體의 관계로 본 것이다. 이러한 그의 관점의 주요 내용은 天人合一의 사상에 기초한, 天道의 誠에 의거한 人道의 실현에 관한 全一論的 사유방식을 구현하고자 한 것이다. 주돈이의 우주론적 세계관은 만물의 생성원리에 입각하여 윤리적 가치와 도덕성 회복을 목표로 하였다면, 조식은 윤리적 가치와 도덕성 회복의 목표를 구현하기 위한 그 구체적 실천 방법을 제시했다. 즉 그는 『태극도설』과 『通書』를 하나로 묶고 誠을 聖人의 근본으로 삼아 본성을 회복함으로써 성인으로서의 인격을 갖추게 되는 과정을 도식화하였고, 이와 같은 간명한 도식을 통하여 직관적이고 효율적인 학습과 수양의 실천을 유도하였다

영어초록

In order to understand Jo Sik’s neo-confucianist view of the world, this paper intends to analyze the iconographic characteristics and contents of the so-called the Hakgi-diagram contained in his Hkgi-yupueon. Jo Sik’s Hkgi- yupueon includes Hakgi-diagram that is consisted of 24 diagrams among which two diagrams, Samjaeil Taiji diagram and Inside-Outside Relationship of Supreme Ultimate and Tongshu, are related to the Taiji diagram while revealing traits of the diagram of Changeology. In particular, Samjaeil Taiji diagram is a diagram drawn in the viewpoint of cosmology, whereas, Inside-Outside Relationship of Supreme Ultimate and Tongshu is drawn in the viewpoint of treatise of human nature. Thus while both are based on the unity of the heavenly and the human, the former diagram explains the generative process of all creation in terms of a cosmological viewpoint, while the latter explains the restoration of human nature in the viewpoint of the treatise of human nature. Zhou Dunyi’s Taiji Diagram is the foundation of the two diagrams to which Jo Sik adds more detailed annotations.
On the basis of Zhou Dunyi’s Taiji Diagram, Jo Sik drew his own Taiji Diagram that embraces his personal view of the world. In Samjaeil Taiji diagram he reinterpreted in a cosmological position the contents of the explanation of Taiji Diagram in which Zhou Dunyi interpreted and explained the generative process of all creations under the principle of Yi. On the other hand, by combining the contents of Tongshu to the Inside-Outside Relationship of Supreme Ultimate and Tongshu, Jo Sik reconstructed the doctrine and structure for the restoration of human nature of a neo-confucianist world view in terms of treatise of human nature. Consistent with what is implied in Inside-Outside Relationship of Supreme Ultimate and Tongshu, Jo Sik regarded the relationship of Taiji Diagram and Tongshu as the interior and exterior of a unitary body. The main crux of his perspective lies in the materialization of holistic thinking on the realization of human morality which is based on the ideology of the union of heaven and man as well as sincerity of heavenly way.
In this context, if the objective of Zhou Dunyi’s cosmological world view was to restore the ethical values and morality based on the generative process of all creation, then Jo Sik suggested a concrete practice method to realize the goal of restoring ethical values and morality. Therefore, combining the explanation of Taiji Diagram and Tongshu, Jo Sik displayed in diagram form the process of possessing the character of a saint by first, restoration of human nature and second, by making sincerity on the basis of a saint. This simple diagram induced the practice of an intuitive and efficient learning and self-discipline.
