연세대 57장본 "홍계월젼"의 이본적 특징과 가치 (Yonsei University 57 Jang-Version "Honggyewoljeon"’s Characteristics and Value as a Different Version)

초록

본고는 연세대 57장본 <홍계월젼>의 이본적 특징과 가치를 탐색한 글이다. 연세대 57장본은 <홍계월전>의 이본 가운데 한중연 45장본 및 활자본과 밀접한 연관이 있다. 이에 따라 본고에서는 세 이본을 대비하여 연세대 57장본의 보편성과 개별성을 확인하고 그 자료적 가치를 논의하였다.
연세대 57장본, 한중연 45장본, 활자본은 서사의 처음, 중간, 끝 부분의 내용이 대부분 일치한다. 물론 이들 세 곳이 아닌 어느 부분을 비교하더라도 세 이본의 높은 유사도를 어렵지 않게 확인할 수 있다. 이는 곧 연세대 57장본이 한중연 45장본 계열의 보편성을 온전히 갖춘 이본임을 말해준다.
연세대 57장본과 한중연 45장본에만 있고 활자본에는 없는 내용이 압도적으로 많다는 것은 세 이본 가운데 두 이본이 가장 유사도가 높음을 의미한다. 반면 활자본은 두 이본에만 있는 내용이 무리하게 생략되어 문맥이 통하지 않으므로 적지 않은 결함을 지닌 것으로 평가된다.
연세대 57장본과 활자본에만 있고 한중연 45장본에는 없는 내용은 아예 생략될 수 없거나 생략되면 문맥이 어색해지는 것들이다. 이와 함께 한중연 45장본에는 곳곳에 잘못 표기된 낱말과 한자(漢字)도 적지 않다. 이로 볼 때 한중연 45장본은 연세대 57장본에 비해 표기의 정확성과 서사의 완성도가 떨어진다고 할 수 있다.
한중연 45장본과 활자본에만 있고 연세대 57장본에는 없는 내용은 대부분 앞뒤 문맥에 지장을 초래하지 않도록 생략 혹은 축약되었다. 이를 통해 연세대 57장본은 서사 전반에 걸쳐 매우 신중하고도 효과적인 생략과 축약이 이루어진 것임을 알 수 있다.
연세대 57장본과 한중연 45장본에는 없고 활자본에만 나오는 내용은 대부분 반드시 필요한 것이 아니기 때문에 설령 이들이 없더라도 문맥에는 전혀 지장이 없다. 이로 볼 때 활자본에만 나와 있는 내용은 필사본을 활자본으로 기획할 때 새롭게 추가된 것으로 추정된다.
이상과 같이 연세대 57장본은 한중연 45장본과 활자본에 비해 결함이 거의 없을 뿐 아니라, 한중연 45장본 계열의 선본(善本)이면서 활자본의 핵심 자료로 활용된 이본이다. 따라서 향후 <홍계월전>에 대한 연구에서 한중연 45장본 계열을 논의할 경우 연세대 57장본 <홍계월젼>을 텍스트로 삼는 것이 바람직하다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to explore Yonsei University 57 jang-version <Honggyewoljyeon>’s characteristics and value as a different version. Yonsei University 57 jang-version is directly associated with Hanjungyeon 45 jang-version and the printed version among the different versions of <Honggyewoljeon>. Accordingly, here, this study has compared the three different versions to understand Yonsei University 57 jang-version’s universality and individuality and discussed its value as material based on that.
The narratives of Yonsei University 57 jang-version, Hanjungyeon 45 jang-version, and the printed version are mostly similar in the beginning, middle part, and the ending. In fact, with comparison on other parts than the three areas, you can readily find great similarity between the three different versions. This tells us that Yonsei University 57 jang-version is a different version soundly equipped with the universality of the Hanjungyeon 45 jang-version line.
The fact that there are most contents found in Yonsei University 57 jang-version and Hanjungyeon 45 jang-version only but not in the printed version implies that among the three different versions, these two different versions show greatest similarity. Meanwhile, since the printed version omits the contents only found in the two different versions too much and is not in coherence, it is evaluated as the one exhibiting the most faults.
Contents only found in Yonsei University 57 jang-version and the printed version but not in Hanjungyeon 45 jang-version are the ones that either cannot be omitted or make it incoherent once omitted. Besides, we can also find not a few wrongly written words or Chinese characters in Hanjungyeon 45 jang-version all over. Due to this, Hanjungyeon 45 jang-version is evaluated to show lower completion than Yonsei University 57 jang-version in terms of accuracy in marking or the narrative.
Contents only found in Hanjungyeon 45 jang-version and the printed version but not in Yonsei University 57 jang-version are either omitted or reduced not to affect the preceding or following context. Because of that, Yonsei University 57 jang-version is evaluated to have very effectively and thoughtfully omitted and reduced parts in its entire narrative.
Most of the contents not found in Yonsei University 57 jang-version and Hanjungyeon 45 jang-version but found in the printed version are not always necessary; therefore, the context is not affected at all even though they are not there. Considering this, we can assume that contents only found in the printed version must have been newly added when the manuscript was planned to be a printed version.
As examined above, Yonsei University 57 jang-version exhibits almost no fault compared with Hanjungyeon 45 jang-version or the printed version, and it was used as the good basis to create the Hanjungyeon 45 jang-version line and also as the main material to produce the printed version. Therefore, if follow-up research on <Honggyewoljeon> is going to discuss the Hanjungyeon 45 jang-version line, it would be desirable to take Yonsei University 57 jang-version <Honggyewoljyeon> as the text.
