일본제국기 ‘開城’의 지역성과 (탈)식민의 문화기획 (Locality in “Gaeseong (開城)” during the time of the Japanese Empire and Cultural Planning in De-colonization)

초록

본 연구는 일본제국기 ‘개성’의 지역성이 형성되는 과정과 그 지역성의 특징을 구명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 개성의 지역성은 고려 왕조의 ‘古都’라는 전통과 개성상인으로 대표되는 민족주의적 모더니티의 결합 속에서 구성되었다. 특히 반(反)일본(자본)적 민족경제론의 감각과 결부된 개성상인 표상은 아직도 대중적인 통념으로 자리잡고 있다. 개성의 지역성을 이렇게 주조한 것은 언제, 누구에 의한 것인가?우선 개성 지역에 대한 가치를 부여한 기원적 순간을 개성 출신의 역사가 창강 김택영의 역사서술 및 인식에서 찾을 수 있다. 구한말(舊韓末)에 김택영은 개성 지역의 역사적 명사들의 덕행과 학행을 퇴행적인 조선왕조와 변별되는 이상적 가치로 제시하였다. 그렇지만 개성(상인)을 자본주의적 가치를 기반으로 하는 모더니티의 적자로 담론화한 것은 1910년대 중후반의 <半島時論>의 개성 특집에서 비롯되었다. 일본인, 조선인이 함께 제작한 제국의 저널리즘인 <半島時論>은 개성 특집을 통해서 개성을 자본주의적 근대성이 자생적으로 발전해 온 지역으로 구성하였다. 개성(상인)은 일본 제국이라는 전체 속에서 近江(상인)과 비교되었다. 이후 1930년대에는 해외 유학을 마치고 돌아온 공진항, 이선근 등의 개성 출신 신진엘리트들이 <高麗時報>와 ‘滿蒙産業株式會社’를 중심으로 개성의 지역성을 전조선 및 일본 제국의 보편적 가치로 제시하는 사회문화적/경제적 실천을 수행하였다. 개성지역의 신진엘리트들은 개성의 지역성을 일본 제국의 경계를 따라 확장해 갔다. 개성의 지역성은 반일본(자본)의 특징을 지니고 있었던 것이 사실이지만 개성의 정체성으로 부여된 이러한 민족(자본)적 주체성의 형상은 실제로는 제국의 현실적 경계 안에서 식민지 권력 및 일본 자본과 제휴하면서 가능할 수 있었다. 식민지시기 동안 유일하게 조선인이 관장직을 맡았던 개성부립박물관은 이러한 개성 지역의 민족적 특성을 증거하는 사례로 언급되지만, 그 설립과 운영을 당대적 맥락에서 검토해보면 개성의 조선인 유지들의 의연과 함께 蔘業 진출을 모색했던 일본 자본 미쓰이(三井)의 기부, 일본인 컬렉션의 희사, 총독부 ‘당국의 승인’ 하에 설립될 수 있었다. 또한 초대 관장 이영순과 개성박물관의 상징적 인물인 2대 관장 고유섭이 조선인이었기 때문에 간과되고 있지만, 그들이 각각 교토제대와 경성제대라는 제국의 아카데미즘에서 훈련된 인물이라는 점이 강조될 필요가 있다. 제국의 학지(學知) 안에서 조선(학술)의 자율성을 고민했던 고유섭의 위치는 식민지 박물관 체계 안에서의 개성박물관의 위치에 대응하는 것이다. 이런 의미에서 개성은 일본 ‘제국’의 경계 안에서 ‘민족적’으로 의미화된 ‘근대의 고도’였다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to closely examine the process of a locality forming in “Gaeseong” during the time of the Japanese empire, and the characteristics in this locality. Locality in Gaeseong was formed amid the combination of nationalistic modernity that is represented by tradition, called “ancient capital (古都)” in the Goryeo dynasty and by Gaeseong merchants. In particular, the symbol of the Gaeseong merchant, which was linked with anti-Japanese (capital) sentiment based on the National Economic Theory, is still positioned as a popular idea. When and by whom was locality in Gaeseong thus founded? First of all, the original moment, which gave value to the Gaeseong region, can be found in the historical writing and recognition of Changgang Kim Taek-yeong (金澤榮 1850~1927), an historian from Gaeseong. In the early-modern times, Kim Taek-yeong suggested the teachings and virtues of historical celebrities in the Gaeseong region were ideal values, which is distinct from the regressive Joseon Dynasty. However, what allowed Gaeseong (merchant) to be a discourse fit for modernity based on capitalistic value originated from the Gaesong feature in Bandosiron (半島時論) in the mid-and-late 1910s. Bandosiron, which is journalism of the empire produced by Japan and Joseonin (朝鮮人), formed Gaeseong as a region where capitalistic modernity had been developed naturally through Gaeseong’s features. Gaeseong (merchant) was compared with Geungang (merchant) in the middle of the whole of the Japanese empire. Since the 1930s, young elites coming from Gaeseong, such as Gong Jin-hang (孔鎭恒, 1900~1972) and Lee Seon-geun (李瑄根, 1905~1983), who returned after finishing their studies overseas, performed social and cultural/economic practices, which proposes the locality of Gaeseong (開城) as the universal value of the whole Joseon and Japanese empire. Young elites in the Gaeseong region proceeded to expand the locality of Gaeseong along the boundaries of the Japanese empire. It is a fact that the locality of Gaeseong had characteristics that were anti-Joseon (dynasty) and anti-Japan (capital). However, the shape of this racial (capital) subjectivity, which was identified as Gaeseong by the Gaeseong people themselves or by Joseon residents outside of Gaeseong, could be evident when collaborating with colonial powers and Japanese capital actually within the realistic boundaries of empire. The Gaeseongburip Museum (開城府立博物館), where Joseonin had held the chief position solely during the colonial period, is mentioned as proof of this racial characteristic of the Gaeseong region. However, when examining its establishment and operation in the context of the contemporary age, it may have been established under the donation of Japanese capital Mitsui (三井), which had sought to advance the ginseng business (蔘業) with contributions from Joseonin community leaders in Gaeseong, under a company established by the collection of Japanese people, and under “approval by the authorities for the Japanese Government General.” Also, it is being overlooked because Lee Yeong-sun, the first chief, and Goh Yu-seop (高裕燮, 1905~1944), the second chief who was a symbolic figure of the Gaeseong Museum, were Joseon residents. However, we must emphasize that they are figures who were trained in the academism of empire called Kyotojedae (京都帝大) and Keijo Imperial University, respectively. The position of Goh Yu-seop, who had worried about autonomy in Joseon (academic) inside the academic journal of empire, is what corresponds to the Gaeseong Museum within the system of the colonial museum. In this sense, Gaeseong was the “ancient capital of the modern times,” which was signified “nationally” inside the boundary of the Japanese “empire.”
