‘로마공화정의 교사’ 리비우스와 역사의 모범사례(exemplum) - 브루투스와 아우구스투스를 중심으로- (Livius as ‘Magister Rei Publicae Romanae’ and Exemplum - Focusing on Brutus and Augustus -)

초록

This paper aimed at investigating Livy’s purpose of writing Ab urbe condita(The History of Rome), especially focusing on his personal relationship with Augustus. Even though some people see Livius as an Augustan, other still think that he is a republican. It is still a controversial issue that can not be firmly investigated to draw a final answer, because the entire section of the Augustan Ages in the History is lost. Also, some remaining fragmentary sources are unreliable and even contradictory to each other. So it seems to be more reasonable to conjecture the answer considering historical situations of his times.
In this paper I argued that Livy himself seemed to have high expectations on Augustus as the ‘Saviour of the Republic’, and he expected that his the History could be meaningful and helpful to Augustus. He also wanted to be an Augustus’s teacher and to give him lessons through the History, when looking at many exempla provided in the History which Livy expected Augustus to emulate or to avoid. Especially the achievements of Brutus such as eliminating monarchy and consul’s election could be used a good exempla to Augustus.
Livy’s the History, however, did not influence Augustus as much as he expected. Even though Augustus believed in the usefulness of history and sought to honor the memory of mos maiorum, revive the pride of the Roman People, and educate the coming generations on the lessons of history, Augustan Principate was remote from ‘Restored Republic’, as he announced. For he monopolized power, honor and authority, and prepared to pass on them to his successor.
