초록

최근에는 겸재 정선(1676~1759)이 진경산수화 뿐 아니라 사의산수화, 시의도, 남종화풍, 고사인물도 등 여러 분야를 개척하면서 조선후기 회화의 다양한 흐름을 선도한 화가로 재평가되고 있다. 또한 정선이 노론계 인사들 뿐 아니라 소론계의 주요 인사들과 적극적으로 교류하였음도 밝혀졌다. 본고에서는 정선이 서양화법을 구사하였다는 사실을 구명하였는데, 이로써 정선은 서양화법까지도 시도한 혁신적인 화가로서 재평가될 수 있을 것이다.
정선은 과거를 거치지 않고 관상감의 천문학겸교수라는 직위로 벼슬살이를 시작하였다. 정선이 관상감에 봉직하던 18세기 초에는 국가적인 차원에서 서양천문학과 과학, 수학 등을 습득하려고 추진하였다. 관상감은 그러한 정책을 추진하던 가장 중요한 기관의 하나였고, 천문학은 그 가운데서도 가장 중요한역할을 담당한 분야였다. 천문학겸교수는 기술직 관원들의 교육과 평가를 담당하고, 그 자신도 정기적인시험을 통해 과학적인 지식을 평가를 받았다. 그러나 정선은 천문학겸교수 본연의 역할을 수행하였다기보다는 당시 관상감에서 수행하였던 각종 서학서의 복제 및 간행에 필요한 삽도의 제작, 각종 서양지도 및천문도의 제작 등 그림과 관련된 역할을 하였을 것으로 보인다. 정선은 화원들에게 새롭고, 난해한 서양화법의 원리 및 기법을 지도하고 감독하였을 것이다. 그러한 이유로 김조순은 훗날 정선이 도화서에 출사하였다고 하는 전언을 남겼던 것으로 보인다. 즉, 지체높은 인사들에게 정선은 도화서의 화원처럼 국가에 소용되는 그림과 관련된 일을 하였던 것으로 인식되었던 것이다.
정선은 서학에 대해서 비판적, 부정적 입장이었던 노론계 인사들과 교분을 가지고 있었지만 동시에서학에 대해서 적극적 인식을 가지고 서양과학기술을 수용하고자 하였던 소론계 인사들과 평생동안 교류하였다. 그러한 배경에서 정선은 일찍이 서학 및 서양회화에 대한 정보 및 관심을 가질 수 있었던 것으로보인다.
본고에서는 현존하는 정선의 작품을 검토하면서 정선이 구사한 서양화법을 크게 네 가지 기준을 가지고 검토하였다. 이 기준들은 모두 서양화법과 관련된 요소들이지만, 본고에서는 우선 지면 표현, 대기표현 등 구체적인 작은 요소로부터 파악하고, 이어 원근법과 투시도법 등 좀더 본질적이지만, 전통적인 요소들과 잘 융합된 요소로 진전하면서 고찰하였다. 그것은 정선이 서양화법에 유래한 표현들을 전통적인기법과 성공적으로 결합시켰기 때문에 한눈에 서양화법의 영향으로 판단하기가 쉽지 않다는 점을 감안한 접근방식이다.
결론적으로 정선은 30대로부터 생애 말년까지 서양화법에서 유래된 기법을 사용하였다. 이러한 기법은 현실 속의 경물을 다룬 진경산수화에서 뿐 아니라 나중에는 사의산수화 등 다른 화제로까지 확대되었으며 정선회화의 중요한 특징으로 정착되었다. 정선이 구사한 서양화법은 조선후기 산수화 상 서양화풍의 영향을 보여주는 이른 사례라는 점에서 의미가 크다. 또한 정선이 진취적인 사상과 문화에 관심을 가진 지식인이었다는 사실을 시사하는 요소로서도 중요하다. 이로써 정선은 전통적인 세계관을 전제로 한중화사상의 틀에 갇힌 채 진경산수화를 추구한 것이 아니라는 사실이 다시한번 확인되었다. 그는 18세기를 맞아 변해가던 사상과 정치, 문화를 직면하면서 변화와 혁신을 추구한 ‘지식인’이었고, 회화의 가치와의미를 새롭게 창출한 새로운 유형의 ‘화가’로 거듭 평가되어야 할 것이다.

영어초록

Jeong Seon(a.k.a. Gyeomjae, 1676-1759) is now generally regarded as a master artist oflate Joseon who made distinguished achievements and played a key role in the developmentof various painting genres such as jingyeong(true-view) landscapes, ideal landscapes,poetry-inspired painting, Southern School painting and historical figure painting. Hemaintained close relationships with leading figures in both Old Doctrine(Noron) and YoungDoctrine(Soron), the two most influential political factions of late Joseon. This study isfocused on some of the western painting techniques used by Jeong Seon,, and it concludesthat he was one of the most innovative artists, one who brought new trends and techniques tothe Korean art of the 18th century.
Jeong Seon started his career as a government official by serving as an astronomyinstructor in the Office of Astronomy and Geomancy(Gwansanggam), a governmentagency responsible for affairs relating to the knowledge of astronomy, natural scienceand mathematics developed in the western world. The Joseon Dynasty of the 18th centuryregarded astronomy as particularly important, assigning instructors like Jeong Seon tothe education and assessment of the public functionaries working in Gwansanggam, andappraising their teaching capabilities through regular tests. It is highly probable that JeongSeon himself participated in the production of paintings, illustrations, maps and astronomicalcharts required for the programs of compiling, copying and publishing books on astronomy.
Jeong Seon is known to have set up friendly relations with the leaders of the OldDoctrine(Noron) who were critical of Western Learning(Seohak), while also maintaining a close relationship with the Young Doctrine(Soron) who were supportive of that learning and insisted that the scientific and technological achievements made in the West should be adopted. It was his close relationships with the Soron that guided Jeong Seon to Western Learning and to western paintings.In this study, the techniques of western art Jeong Seon adopted are discussed according to four criteria. While these criteria are all related to the techniques of western art, the Discussion starts with detailed elements such as the representations of the land surface and atmospheric effect, and proceeds to elements more essential, but more deeply fused with tradition, such as perspective. This approach is deemed appropriate considering that the techniques of western origin are integrated with the traditional so successfully in his works that it is not easy to discern the influences that came from western art.
Paintings by Jeong Seon show that the artist began to use western techniques when he was in his thirties, and continued to use them up to his final years. The techniques were first used in his jingyeong paintings depicting real landscapes as they were viewed by the artist, and were gradually extended to his other works, eventually establishing the features that were characteristic of his art. His use of western techniques is regarded as significant in that it is one of the earliest case showing the influence of western art on the landscape paintings of Joseon, and also in that it suggests he was an intellectual with a keen interest in progressive ideas and culture. His true-view paintings should be regarded as evidence of his reluctance to accept the framework of the traditional world view based on Sinocentrism. Jeong Seon, in conclusion, was an intellectual who sought after change and innovation in the face of the changes occurring in the ideologies, politics and culture of 18th century Joseon, and an artist of a new kind who created new value and meaning in his paintings.
