한국고전종합DB 활용과 문제점 (Utilization of the Korean Classics DB and Limitations)

초록

한국고전종합DB(https://db.itkc.or.kr/)는 자료의 공유와 확산에 기여함으로써 한국학 발전에 큰 역할을 담당하였다. 특히 각주정보는 2010년부터 30년 계획으로 시행 중인 권역별거점연구소협동번역사업의 안정적 운영에도 긍정적 영향을 끼쳤다. 구축 초기에 비해 성능의 발전, 정보의 증가 등 발전도 이루었지만 이용자의 입장에서 불편도 적지 않다. 본고는 한국고전종합DB가 보다 완전한 모습으로 발전하여 우리나라 고전 분야의 표준 DB로 성장하기를 기대하면서 문제점을 지적, 개선을 희망하였다.
첫째, 불편한 성능을 지적하고 개선 방향을 제시하였는데, DB의 성능은 이용자가 편의를 최우선으로 고려해야 한다. 세부 내용은 다음과 같다.




① 상세검색의 영문 연산기호 기호 → ‘한/영’ 전환키를 누르지 않아도 되는 연산기호로 수정.
② 상세검색에서 검색 용어 입력 후 ‘검색’ 클릭 → ‘검색’ 버튼 대신 Enter키로 실행되도록 수정.
③ 연산기호의 설계 내용과 다른 결과 값 → 본래 설계 내용에 부합하도록 수정.
④ 입력창의 한자 입력 방법의 불편함 → Explorer 사용 당시의 기능 회복.
⑤ ‘고전번역서 각주정보’의 ‘검색결과 중 다음으로’ 버튼의 비활성화 → ‘검색결과 중 다음으로’ 버튼의 활성화로 수정.
⑥ ‘동시 스크롤’ 기능의 원문과 번역문 불일치 → 원문과 번역문이 대응되도록 하고, 식별 기호를 사용하는 방안도 고려.
⑦ ‘동시 스크롤’ 사용 중 ‘각주정보’로의 이동 및 복사 불가능 → ‘각주정보’의 복사 가능하도록 수정.




둘째, 한국고전종합DB의 다양하고 전문적인 정보는 유용하지만 아쉬운 점도 공존한다. 내용을 요약하면 다음과 같다.




① 각주정보는 번역서에 포함된 주석만을 포함함 → 이용자가 작성한 주석정보를 접수하여 정보량을 증가시킬 수 있도록 ‘오류신고’와 유사한 형태의 ‘주석접수’ 운영.
② 각주정보의 상이한 정보 내용 → 원전의 내용과 번역을 제공하는 ‘표준각주’ 작성.
③ ‘고전용어 시소러스’의 특색 부족 → 백과사전이나 포털 사이트와 구별되는 ‘고전용어’ 중심으로 재구성.
④ ‘고전용어 시소러스’의 무의미한 관계도 → 視認性을 높이고 관계를 명료하게 정리.




셋째, 번역문의 제공은 한국고전종합DB의 핵심이다. 그러나 지나친 한자어 사용, 원문의 형식에 얽매인 번역으로 인해 일반인이 이해하기 어려운 문제점을 안고 있다. 권역별거점연구소협동번역사업의 성과물이 지속적으로 탑재될 것이므로, 사업의 번역 방향을 가독성 제고 쪽으로 과감하게 전환, 가독성을 높여야 한다. 아울러 20년 이상 지난 번역은 재번역을 적극 추진해야 한다.
넷째, 한국고전종합DB 이용의 부정적 측면을 생각하고 주의할 필요가 있다. 번역자가 고전DB를 지나치게 의존할 경우 원전 읽기를 소홀히 함으로써 깊이 있는 이해가 불가능해진다. 초학자들은 가공된 자료만을 접하게 되어 원천 자료의 해독 능력이 떨어질 수 있다. DB를 무한 신뢰하지 말고 ‘도구’로 활용하는 자세가 필요하다.

영어초록

The Korean Classics DB (https://db.itkc.or.kr) has played a significant role in the development of Korean Studies by contributing to distributing and publicizing classical documents. In particular, footnote information had a positive influence on the stable management of the Collaborative Translation Project among Regional Research Centers, a project which has been ongoing since 2010 with a 30-year plan. Although compared to the early years of its establishment the database has been improved in terms of its performance and the quantity of information, there is still room for enhancement, addressing the inconveniences experienced by users. This article aims to discuss the DB’s limitations and points for improvement with an expectation that the Korean Classics DB can be advanced further and becomes a standard database in the field of Korean Classics.
First, this article identied some inconvenient performance issues and proposed suggestions. The performance of the DB should prioritize the convenience of consumers. The followings are the specific contents.
① The English symbols of operation in advanced search → New symbols of operation that do not require the use of the English/Korean key.
② After entering a search term, users must click the search button → Users should be able to search the term by pressing the enter key.
③ The search design through the symbols of operation does not produce the desired results → The search outcome should follow the original search design.
④ The inconvenience in entering Chinese characters into the search box → Need to recover the function that was available when the Explorer browser was available ⑤ Deactivation of the “Next within the searched results” button in the footnote information under classical translations → Need to activate the “Next within the searched results” button ⑥ The simultaneous scrolling function does not work consistently for both the original and translated documents. → The original and translated documents should correspond. May consider adopting the identification symbols.
⑦ It is impossible to move to the “footnote information” and copy contents while using the simultaneous scrolling function. → Users should be able to copy the content of the “footnote information.” Second, although the diverse and professional information available in the Korean Classics DB is useful, there is some room for improvement, which are summarized in the following.
① The footnote information only contains footnotes included in the translated documents. → May consider having a footnote registration system, something similar to “report an error,“ in order to increase the volume of information by registering the footnotes users made.
② The format of footnote information varies → A standardized footnote style that provides both the original content and translation.
③ The features of “classical term thesaurus” are lacking → May need to reconfigure it centered around the classical terms, which may be different from encyclopedias or portals.
④ Meaningless relationship diagrams in the classical term thesaurus → Need to increase visibility and make the relationship diagram clear.
Third, providing translated documents is the core function of the Korean Classics DB, but because of the excessive usage of Chinese characters and translations that follow the formality of the original documents, ordinary users are not able to access them conveniently. As the results generated by the Collaborative Translation Project among Regional Research Centers will continue to accumulate, the focus of the translation business should be drastically changed into the improvement of readability. to ensure that readability is enhanced. Furthermore, translations that were completed more than 20 years ago should be retranslated.
Fourth, we need to carefully think about the negative aspects of using the Korean Classics DB. If translators excessively rely on the DB, it will hinder the in-depth understanding of the original texts as they may neglect opportunities to read them. As junior scholars read translated documents, the abilit to read the original text may decline. It is important to use the DB simply as a tool without placing indefinite confidence in it.
