전기서사의 기법적 전통과 <주생전>에서의 변화와 의미 (A Study on tradition and change of narrative technique in Joosangjeon)

초록

이 논문은 <주생전>을 중심으로 전기에 나타나는 서사 기법의 전통과 변화를 통시적인 관점에서 조망하는 것이 주된 목표이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 전기의 전통적 기법을 개괄한 다음, <주생전>에 나타난 서사 기법 양상을 분석하였다. 이를 바탕으로 이 작품의 가치와 의의를 검토하였다. 논의한 내용을 요약하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 전기 서사의 기법적 전통을 검토하였다. 전기는 서사 전개상 가상세계를 활용하는 전통을 가지고 있다. 그것이 서사관습으로 고착화되어 전기는 기이성을 띠는 문학으로 인식된다. 그 가상세계는 기준에 따라 다양할 수 있지만 크게 세 유형으로 설정할 수 있다. 즉 탁몽계(託夢界)·탁물계(託物界)·탁명계(託冥界)가 그것이다. 각 유형에 우리 전기의 대부분이 수렴될 수 있기 때문에 이렇게 셋으로 나누는 것도 유용하다. 이 가상세계에서 현실적으로 다루기 어려운 문제를 우회적이면서도 더 강력하게 서사하는 특징이 있다.
둘째, <주생전>에 나타난 서사 기법의 양상을 분석하였다. <주생전>의 서사 구도는 전기의 액자구조에서 도입액자를 생략하고 내부액자를 서사한 다음, 종결액자에서 내부액자의 이야기에 신빙성을 더하는 부가적인 정보를 제공하고 있다. 특히 가상세계인 내부액자를 현실계인 명나라로 설정한 것은 기존의 전기와는 판이한 서사 구도이다. 그러한 가상세계의 변주로 이계를 탈피하여 기이성에서 벗어날 수 있었고, 가상계의 인물이 퇴출됨으로써 세속인물이 서사의 전면에 배치될 수 있었다. 그리고 개인적인 욕망을 가진 세속인물이 사건을 이기적인 관점에서 핍진하게 전개할 뿐만 아니라 가상세계에서 조화와 충족을 다룬 전기와는 달리 갈등과 반목을 의미 있게 서사하였다.
셋째, 서사 구현을 통해 본 <주생전>의 의의를 조망하였다. <주생전>은 서사 기법을 일신했다는 점에서 그 가치를 인정받을 수 있다. <주생전>은 가상세계인 이계(異界)가 모두 탈락됨으로써 서사내용 전반이 현실성을 갖게 되었다. 전기의 가상세계를 현실적인 세계로 변주한 것은 기법 면에서 평가할 만한 일이다. 뿐만 아니라 소설사의 변곡점을 <주생전>이 만든 것도 평가해야 한다. 이 작품은 가상세계를 명나라로 환치함으로써 기이성에 기댄 담론에서 벗어나 세속적인 서사로 전개되도록 했다. 가상세계로 대체된 중국이 우리 소설의 주요한 공간배경으로 자리매김하도록 한 것도 주목할 일이라 하겠다.

영어초록

The main goal of this paper is to look at the traditions and changes of narrative techniques that appear in the Chonki(傳奇) from a synchronic perspective, focusing on Joosangjeon. Therefore, in this study, the traditional techniques of chuanchi were outlined, and then the realization of narrative appeared in Joosangjeon were analyzed. Based on this, the value and significance of this work were reviewed.
First, the narrative implementation and technical tradition of the chuanchi were reviewed. Chuanchi has a tradition of utilizing the virtual world to realize narratives. It became fixed as a narrative practice, and the chuanchi became a narrative literature with eccentricity. The virtual world can be divided into mong-yu, fableer, and ghost marriage. Since most of our chuanchi converges to each type, it is useful to divide it into three. Problems that are realistically difficult to address can be described indirectly but more powerfully in this virtual world.
Second, the aspect of narrative realization in Joosangjeon was analyzed. The narrative composition of Joosangjeon omitted the introductory frame from the frame structure of the chuanchi described the internal frame, and provided additional information that added credibility to the internal frame's story in the closing frame. In particular, setting the internal frame, which is a virtual world, as the Ming Dynasty, which is a real world, is a different composition from the existing chuanchi. With such a variation in the virtual world, it was possible to escape from the eccentricity by breaking away from the ultramundane, and as the characters of the virtual world were expelled, secular characters could be placed in the front of the narrative. And not only did secular figures with personal desires develop events verisimilitude from a selfish point of view, but they also dealt with conflict and antagonism, unlike previous stories that dealt with harmony and fulfillment in the virtual world.
Third, the significance of Joosangjeon viewed through the realization of the narrative was viewed. Joosangjeon can be recognized for its value in that it has renewed its narrative technique. In Joosangjeon, the entire narrative content was guaranteed to be realistic as all the virtual world were eliminated. The transformation of the virtual world of chuanchi into a realistic world deserves to be recognized in terms of techniques. In addition, the inflection point of the history of fiction which Joosangjeon made should be evaluated. By transforming the virtual world into the Ming Dynasty, this work allowed it to develop into a secular narrative, free from the discourse leaning on eccentricity. It is also worth evaluating that China, which has been replaced by a virtual world, has established itself as a major spatial background for our novels.
