근대여성 주체의 연애담론 분석을 통한 <김연실전> 연구 (A Study on Kim Yeon-sil Practice through The Analysis of The Modern Women as a Main Subject)

초록

이 논문의 목적은 주로 남성 지식인에 의해 형상화된 문학 장 안에서의 ‘신여성’과 연애담론이 식민지 조선에 뿌리내리는 과정에서 여성으로서 ‘주체되기’가 어떤 의미이며, 그것이 어떻게 변화되었는지 소설 <김연실전>을 통해 연구하는 것이다. 근대공적 영역의 주체로 호명되었지만 동시에 타자로 존재했던 ‘신여성’과 자유연애 담론을 살펴보는 것은 리타 펠스키가 말했듯이 “보편적 가치를 가장하며 남성적 규범에 의해 판단”되었던 여성의 존재를 복권하기 위한 것이다.
이러한 문제의식을 바탕으로 이 연구는 첫째, 1장과 2장에서 식민지 근대의 장에서 ‘신여성’ 형성에 영향을 미친 담론들을 찾아 그 전개 과정과 특징을 살피고, 남성적 계몽담론에 의해 의미를 상실하게 되는 여성담론의 사회문화적 쟁점을 분석하고자 한다. 이를 위해 먼저 근대 초기에 ‘신여성’이라는 주체를 형성한 여성이 주체를 형성하기까지의 방법론적 과정을 담론적 차원에서 살핀다. 근대초기에 신여성 담론장에는 ‘근대 여성 교육담론’과 ‘연애담론’이 크게 영향을 미친다. 신여성이 근대적 사회변동의 산물인 이유이다.
그러나 신여성을 일정 부분 추켜세웠던 조선의 지식인은 결코 여성을 정치적 주체로 호명할 의지가 없었으며 여성은 남성의 하위파트너로 명명되고 만다. 근대 여성 주체의 형성과 제 담론은 계몽적 남성 지식인에게 주도권이 넘어갔는데, 그 방법 중의 하나가 계몽적 남성 지식인에 의해 구성된 문학작품에 의해서이다. 남성 작가들에 의해 그려진 신여성에 대한 조롱과 비하의 수준은 자신들의 영역을 빼앗기지 않으려는 저항의지의 세기만큼 컸다. 특히 1세대 신여성 중에 1917년 소설 <의심의 소녀>를 발표하며 최초의 여성 소설가로 공적 영역에 화려하게 등장한 김명순에 대한 남성지식인의 거세 노력은 치열했다. 이 연구의 두 번째 목적은 3-4장에서 고민한다. 3장에서는 1세대 신여성 중 한 명인 김명순을 모델로 쓴 김동인의 <김연실전>을 신역사주의적 독법을 활용하여 분석한다. 이때 기저 담론은 당시 남성중심 지배담론에 대한 저항담론으로 시대를 풍미했던 ‘근대 여성 교육담론’에 근거한 ‘연애담론’이다. 4장에서는 남성 서술자의 시선으로 구성된 <김연실전>의 주인공 연실의 연애사를 비판적으로 분석한다. 일본 유학파 출신의 엘리트 김연실은 문학작품 안에서 ‘연애’라는 근대적 개념을 경험하면서 내면이 형성되고, 연애를 이념화하며 근대적 주체 또는 근대적 자아로 구성된다. 그러나 소설의 이면을 꼼꼼히 따져보면 남성적 시선으로 포착한 여성의 연애가 얼마나 굴절되고 왜곡되어 서술되어 있는지, 여성의 근대 공적 영역으로의 진출을 방해하는 요소가 얼마나 은폐되어 있는지를 포착할 수 있다. 이와 같은 남성지배의 법칙은 순수한 연애가 남녀 간 지배관계를 불식시키는 기제로 작용할 기회를 폐기하는 수단이기도 했다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is looking into which meaning 'modern women' and dating discourse impose on woman as a main subject in the process of its settlement in colonized Joseon Dynasty within literary field, which has mostly been embodied by male intellects, and how it is transformed. Examining 'modern women' and open relationship discourse, which have been named as the main subject of the modern public field but existed as another person, is designed for restoring existence of women which had "feigned universal value and been judged based on masculine norms" as stated by Rita Felski.
Based on such a problem consciousness, first, this study will look into the development process and characteristics after discovering the discourses which influenced the formation of 'modern women' in the modern colonization field and analyze the sociocultural issues of female discourse which lose their meaning due to masculine enlightenment discourse. For this aim, this study will examine the methodological process until women, who had formed main subject 'modern women' at the beginning of the modern time, formed subjectivity on discourse level. At the beginning of the modern time, 'modern women education discourse' and 'dating discourse' had immense influence on modern women discourse field. This is why modern women are the byproduct of modern social convulsion. The first generation modern women target gender equality ideology and attempt the dismantlement of patriarchal gender roles. The transformations of the systems and the products of civilization in the 1920s and 30s gave rise to the female secondary education generation and female intellects who have studied abroad and urged accommodation of foreign feminism thoughts and ideologies. The effects of the two discourses on formation of modern women are truly immense.
However, the intellects of the Joseon Dynasty who had praised modern women to a certain extent had no will to address women as political subject and women are named as men's subordinate partner. The formation of modern women subject and several discourses lost their initiative to illuminati male intellects and one of the methods is the literary works written by the intellects. The level of ridicule and demeanor toward modern women portrayed by male artists was as powerful as the resistance spirit of trying to preserve one's own territory. In particular, the eradication effort by male intellects toward Kim Myung-soun who made a splendid debut in public domain as the first female writer among the first generation modern women by publishing Girl in Doubt in 1917 was fierce. Second, this study analyzes Chronology of Kim Yeonsil by Kim Dong-in, which was written based on Kim Myung-soun who was one of the first generation modern women, by using neohistoricism reading. The foundation discourse is 'dating discourse' based on 'modern women education discourse' which dominated the era as the resistance discourse with regard to male-centered domination discourse of the time since Kim Yeonsil who is an elite who studied in Japan forms inner self while experiencing 'dating' within literary work and becomes a modern subject or self by ideologizing dating.
