<최척전>의 작품 구성 방식과 가문 지향적 성격 (The Method of organization and Family-oriented aspects of )

초록

<최척전> 연구의 핵심은 애정서사가 중심인 전반부와 가족서사가 중심인 후반부의 관련 양상을 면밀히 살펴 그것에 의거하여 작품을 해석하는 데 있다. 이러한 관점으로 논의한 결과 다음과 같은 결론에 도달하였다. <최척전>의 전반부는 첫째, 남녀주인공이 남녀관계가 아니라 부부관계를 지향한다는 점이다. 이는 옥영이, 남자가 아닌 남편으로서 최척을 맞이하려는 태도에서 분명히 확인된다. 둘째, 남녀주인공의 혼전 동침이 이루어지지 않는다는 점이다. 이는 연애를 통한 남녀관계로서의 애정 추구보다는 혼인을 통한 부부관계로서의 행복 추구가 목적이었기 때문에 가능했던 것이다. 셋째, 기자 치성을 통한 후사가 존재한다는 점이다. 이 작품에서 남녀 주인공이 추구하는 행복은 부부관계를 지향하는 혼인을 통해 아들을 낳아 후사를 도모하는 데서 완성된다. 이 셋은 기존 작품과 변별되는 <최척전>의 특징이며 작품 후반부를 견인하는 동력으로 작용한다.
<최척전>의 후반부는 기존 작품처럼 남녀관계를 바탕으로 한 애정 지향으로 전개되지 않는다. 전란이라는 역사적 질곡 속에서 최척 일가의 이산과 재회가 드라마틱하게 전개되는데 이 과정에는 다양한 혈연관계와 혼인관계가 등장한다. 그로 인해 작품의 등장인물들은 부부, 부모, 부자, 모자, 고부, 조손, 사돈 등으로 확장된다. 이는 혈연과 혼인을 통한 가문 형성 과정을 우리의 소설에서 최초로 노정(露呈)하는 것이라 할 수 있다. 또한 등장인물들 역시 가문에 대한 애정과 사랑의 감정을 토대로 한 ‘가문애(家門愛)’를 발현하고 있는데, 바로 이러한 점에서 <최척전>은 본격적인 가문소설이 등장하기 이전의, 가문의식(家門意識)의 잠재태로서 ‘가문애’가 발현되는 가문소설의 맹아적 면모를 갖춘 작품이라 할 수 있다.

영어초록

In researching <Choi Cheok Jeon>, it is important to draw out the theme of the novel by investigating relations between the former and latter halves of the work. Here, the first half of the novel mostly consists of narration about love and the second half, about family. Above all, this study examined how <Choi Cheok Jeon> is narratively developed. With results of the examination, then, the study tried to newly interpret the theme of the novel. The findings of the study can be summarized as follows. First, the male and female protagonists of the novel seeks their relationship between husband and wife, not between man and woman as found in the former half of the work. This is clearly supported by Ok Young's attitude to accept Choi Cheok not as just a man, but as her husband. Second, both the protagonists do not sleep together before marriage. This indicates that they pursue happiness from their marital relationship rather than just love through relationship between the opposite sexes. And third, the two main characters obtain their offspring through praying for son-bearing. Thus, the male and female protagonists reach complete happiness by having a son as their offspring after making their marital relationship.
These three points make <Choi Cheok Jeon> clear discriminated from other works. They also provide a strong basis for narrative development in the latter half of that novel. Unlike other novels, <Choi Cheok Jeon> does not adhere to affection based on man-woman relationship in its latter half. This part provides a panoramic drama regarding situations the Choi Cheok family experienced in the disturbances of war from their dispersion to reunion. Those situations include making lots of kinships and marital relationships, extending character relations from husband and wife to parent and child, father and son, mother and son, mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, grandparents and grandchild, and matrimonial relations. This indicates a process through which a family was properly established by blood and marriage. In the process, characters of the novel developed ‘familyphilia’ with the affection and love of their family. In this sense, <Choi Cheok Jeon> was an embodiment of ‘familyphilia’ based on which the consciousness of family, It was a forerunner of family novels before they began to be written in earnest. This nature of the novel may be seen as an outcome from narrative strategies that its author took to make apparent the theme of family orientation under a full consideration of organic narrative developments from the former to the latter parts of the novel.
