한국 고전소설 영역(英譯)의 문제 - <운영전>의 경우 (A study on the English translation of Korean classical novels - analysis of translation of Unyeong - Jeon)

초록

한국 문학 작품들에 대한 영역 작업은 19세기 말 선교사들에 의해 시작되었다. 이 후 양적 팽창의 시기를 거쳐 최근에는 좋은 번역이 어떤 것인가 하는 질적 향상의 문제에 관심이 집중되는 모습이다. 그러나 고전 작품의 번역은 여타의 한국 문학 작품에 비해 여전히 주목받지 못하는 위치에 있고 의미있는 결과물이 제한적이다. 본고에서는 비교적 최근에 번역된 작품인 Unyŏng-Jŏn -A Love Affair at the Royal Palace of Chosŏn Korea를 분석하면서 고전 문학 작품 번역 과정에서 나타날 수 있는 문제와 해결 방향을 고민해 보았다.
우선, 번역의 최우선 과제인 저본 선택의 문제이다. 한국의 고전 작품은 다양한 이본이 존재하는 경우가 많다. 이들의 정본화 작업과 올바른 저본 선택이 번역에 앞서 신중하게 처리되어야 한다. 둘째는 고유명사 표기에 있어 표준 한글 로마자 표기법과 기존 관행인 McCune-Reischauer 표기법이 충돌한다는 문제이다. 후자가 서구인에게 익숙한 표기이고 발음의 친밀감도 높겠지만 표준안은 표준으로 통용되어야 하는 문제가 있다. 셋째는 한자어 발음의 표기 방식이다. 고유명사를 비롯한 한자어를 음차하여 번역할 때 한국식 한자 발음을 따를 것인지 아니면 중국어 발음을 따를 것인지 하는 점이다. 영역본 Unyŏng-Jŏn은 이런 점들을 고민한 흔적이 보이지만 통례에 따랐고 뚜렷한 해결을 보지는 못했다.
<운영전>은 그 문제의식과 소설적 구성, 빼어난 미적 특질로 인해 우리 고전소설사에서 자타가 공인하는 뛰어난 소설이다. Michael J. Petted의 영역본 Unyŏng-Jŏn은 근자에 이루어진 고전소설 영역(英譯)의 주요한 성과로 충실한 번역으로서 매우 시사적이다. 그러나 원전의 품격과 문학적 성과를 번역에 어떻게 살리는가의 문제는 여전한 고민거리로 남았다. 은유와 함축이 돋보이는 많은 시, 고아한 문체, 섬세한 심리묘사 등을 어떻게 표현하느냐에 따라 우리 고전소설 번역의 성과가 달라지기 때문이다.

영어초록

Korean literary works began to be translated into English in the end of the 19th century by missionaries. Since then the period of qualitative expansion has followed and now people are more interested in translation quality improvement. Still, since classic literature translation has not received sufficient attention in the country, the number of quality translation works have been limited. In this paper, Unyŏng-Jŏn -A Love Affair at the Royal Palace of Chosŏn Korea is analyzed, which was translated into English recently, to examine problems in classic literature translation process and explore solutions.
The first priority is to select a proper original version of Korean literature to translate. In many cases, Korean classical literature works have more than one single original version. Such different original versions need to be properly unified and the appropriate original version should be chosen prior to translation. Second, the issue is that, in the orthography of proper nouns, the standard Korean Romanization method conflicts with the existing practice of McCune-Reischauer method. The latter may be more familiar to western people in terms of both notation and pronunciation. However, the standard method should be respected universally. Third is the orthography of Sino-Korean word. This issue is about whether to follow the Korean pronunciation of such Sino-Korean words or Chinese pronunciation thereof in translation. The Unyŏng-Jŏn translated version of Unyeong-jeon(운영전) shows consideration over this aspect but with no clear solution.
Unyeong-jeon(운영전) is undeniably an excellent novel in the history of Korean classical literature for its critical mind, fictional structure and extraordinary aesthetic features. The English translation of Unyeong-jeon by Michael J. Petted is an important recent achievement of Korean classical literature translation. The work provides diverse implications of classical literature translation, ranging from the orthography to Sino-Korean word treatment, way of footnote use, and to faithful translation of the original text. However, it seems to remain open how to effectively deliver the class of original text and its literature achievement in translated version. It is because the achievement of Korean classical literature translation can vary according to the way of expressing many poets with outstanding metaphors and implications, elegant writing style, delicate psychology portrayal, etc.
