초록

<소리도 없이>는 <토끼전>의 ‘다시쓰기’ 사례로, <토끼전>에서 촉발된 상상력을 훌륭하게 고양하여 우리 사회가 사유해야 할 문제를 묵직하게 던진 한편 <토끼전>의 의미를 새롭게 음미하게 한 작품이다. 본고는 영화 <소리도 없이>에 드러난 <토끼전>을 바라보는 관점에 주목하여 그 특징과 의미에 접근하고, 아울러 <소리도 없이>의 시선에서 <토끼전>의 의의를 재탐색한 연구이다. 우선 <소리도 없이>가 <토끼전>을 어떻게 패러디하고 있는지 살폈다. 창복과 태인은 성실히 하루 일과를 보내는 평범한 노동자처럼 보이지만 조직폭력배가 죽인 시체를 처리하는 일을 한다. 그리고 그들이 예기치 않게 11세의 초희를 납치하게 되면서 본격적인 서사가 전개된다. 그들은 수익 창출을 우선하는 자본주의 논리를 무비판적으로 추수하며 생활한다는 점에서 용왕에 대한 맹목적 충(忠)을 성실히 이행하는 자라의 모습과 유비된다. 한편 납치당한 상황에서도 자신이 처한 상황에 냉철하게 대응하는 초희에게서 토끼의 재기와 생명력이 발견된다. 이 영화는 창복과 태인을 비롯한 범죄자들을 형상화할 때, 의도적으로 범죄의 이미지를 지우고 먹고살기 위해 일하는 성실한 노동자로서의 면모를 부각시킴으로써, 그들처럼 그냥 일을 할 뿐인 우리의 평범한 일상을 돌아보게 한다. 생계를 위해 일을 한다고 하지만, 효율과 성장이 최고선이 되는 자본주의 논리에 무심히 동참하는 순간 자칫 괴물이 되어갈지 모를 현대인들의 위험성을 날카롭게 응시하고 있는 것이다. 한편 <소리도 없이>의 시선으로 <토끼전>을 읽을 때 먼저 눈에 띄는 것은 중세 지배질서가 해체되는 과정에서 생존하기 위해 부단히 분투하는 인물들의 삶이고, 토끼의 생존 문제이다. <토끼전>은 부조리한 봉건체제와 부패한 지배층을 풍자하고 서민의 발랄한 생명력과 기지를 그려내어 성장하는 서민의식을 고취시킨 작품으로 평가받는다. 이때 토끼는 각성하여 저항하는 긍정적 이미지의 민중 형상이라 여겨지는 경우가 많은데, 여러 이본의 토끼 형상을 자세히 따져보면 긍정적 이미지의 민중, ‘이상적 민중상’이라 하기 어려운 점들이 발견된다. 토끼는 허욕에 사로잡혀 허세를 부리고, 이본에 따라서는 용왕의 헤게모니 안에서 스스로 용왕의 욕망을 욕망하기도 하는 것이다. 그런데 오히려 이 점이 오늘날 <토끼전>을 다시 주목해야 하는 이유이다. 새로운 시대의 주인공이 될 훌륭하고 선량하기만 한 ‘이상적 민중’이 아니라, 각자도생의 고단한 현실을 살아내는 미천한 처지의 결함 많은 범상한 인물이 소설의 주인공으로 등장하고, 그런 인물의 ‘생명의 무게’도 용왕의 그것과 다르지 않다는 이치가 그 스스로의 의지와 기지로 증명되었기 때문이다. 초희에게서 어린이의 천진난만함, 혹은 ‘피해자다움’이 발견되지 않더라도, 그가 태인의 호의를 배반한 듯 보여도, 그 상황에서 우선되어야 하는 것은 초희의 안녕이며 생명의 존엄성이듯, 미천하고 교활한 토끼의 생명도 용왕의 목숨만큼이나 소중하다는 진실을 <토끼전>은 말하고 있는 것이다.

영어초록

<Voice of Silence> is an example of the 'rewriting' of <Tokkijeon (the story of a rabbit)>, which brilliantly elevates the imagination sparked in <Tokkijeon>, posing a difficult problem that requires our society to think about, while simultaneously allowing one to appreciate the meaning of <Tokkijeon> in a new way. This paper focuses on the perspective of looking at <Tokkijeon> revealed in the movie <Voice of Silence>, approaches its characteristics and meaning, and re-examines the significance of <Tokkijeon> from the perspective of <Voice of Silence>. First, how <Voice of Silence> parodied <Tokkijeon> was explored. Chang-bok and Tae-in appear to be ordinary workers who work hard every day, but they deal with the bodies killed by gangsters. As they unexpectedly kidnap 11-year-old Cho-hee, a full-fledged narrative unfolds. The two men are analogous to soft-shelled turtles who faithfully fulfill their blind loyalty to the dragon king in that they uncritically accept capitalism’s logic that prioritizes the creation of profit. On the other hand, even while being kidnapped, Cho-hee calmly responds to her situation, exhibiting a rabbit's brilliance and vital force. By portraying criminals such as Chang-bok and Tae-in and the gangsters and kidnappers with whom they associate in an ordinary light, this film intentionally erases the image of crime by emphasizing the aspect of faithful workers who work to make a living, causing us to reflect on our ordinary lives. It is staring sharply at the dangers of modern people who may become monsters the moment they carelessly join the logic of capitalism where efficiency and growth are prioritized even though they say they just work for a living. Unconstrained by ethical considerations, capitalism can kill millions out of cold indifference and greed. On the other hand, when reading <Tokkijeon> from the perspective of <Voice of Silence>, the first thing that catches our attention is the lives of the characters who struggle to survive in the process of the dissolution of the medieval ruling order, and the challenge of the rabbit's survival. <Tokkijeon> is evaluated as a work that satirizes the absurd feudal system and corrupt ruling class and inspires a growing commoner consciousness by depicting the lively vital power and wit of the common people. At this point, rabbits are often considered to be a positive image of people who awaken and resist, but just as those who enjoyed it at the time perceived it as “a disgusting rabbit who mocked the dragon king,” a closer examination of the rabbit shapes of various versions reveals aspects that are difficult to call a positive “ideal image of the people.” The rabbit is obsessed with greed and bluffs, and, according to the different versions, desires the same as the dragon king. This is why <Tokkijeon> deserves attention again today. Rather than perfect “ideal people” who will be the protagonists of the new era, an unusual character with many flaws in a humble situation who lives the hard reality of their own life appears as the protagonist of the novel, and the principle that the weight of such a character's life is no different to that of the dragon king is proven through its own will and wit. Even though Cho-hee neither demonstrates a child's innocence or “behaves like a victim,” and she appears to have betrayed Tae-in's favor, what should be prioritized in the situation is Cho-hee's well-being and the sanctity of life. In this way, <Tokkijeon> is telling the truth that the life of a lowly and cunning rabbit, who was full of vanity and fell for the turtle's trick and seemed to deserve bad things, is just as precious as the life of the dragon king.
