『심청전』의 부녀관계와 서사구조 (Father-Daughter Relation and Narrative Structureof 『Sim Cheong’s Tale』)

초록

이 글은 부녀관계와 서사구조의 유기적 상관성을 분석하여 『심청전』 읽기의 한 관점을 제시한 것이다. 세상에 가장 널리 그리고 인상 깊게 알려진 심청의 면모는 ‘효녀’이다. 한국 문화에서 ‘효녀 심청’은 일종의 관용어이다. 『심청전』의 주제를 ‘효’로 간주하는 입장은 20세기 초 이후 주류를 이루어왔다. 이러한 인식은 관습적 해석으로 고착되어, 실험적이면서 혁신적인 읽기를 방해해왔다. ‘심청 이야기’의 오랜 연원과 방대한 외연을 고려하면, 효행 윤리는 작품에 진하게 덧칠해진 특정 시대의 흔적이자 표징일 가능성이 높다. 본고는 이야기가 발 딛고 있는 역사 사실이나, 강변하고 있는 윤리에서 시선을 거두어, 서사구조 자체를 주목하였다. 형식은 그 스스로 모든 것을 말하고 있으며, 표현들은 다 의미를 감추고 있다는 관점에서, 텍스트 분석을 시도하였다. 그 결과 두 가지 사실을 밝혀냈다. 첫째, 『심청전』은 ‘모녀 교체→부녀 애착→부녀 분리→딸의 배우자 탐색, 혼인→부친의 안맹(眼盲), 유리(遊離)→딸의 귀환과 부친의 각성’의 과정, 즉 부녀 관계의 심리적 양태 및 그 흐름을 구현하고 있다. 둘째, 부녀 관계를 구현하는 방식은 서사 구조와 긴밀하게 조직되어 독특한 미적 효과를 창출한다. 독해의 초점을 심청하게 맞추면, 『심청전』은 딸이 아버지와의 애착 관계에서 벗어나 독립을 시도하는 이야기이다. 다만 혼인을 전제로 한(또는 혼인으로 귀결되는) 아버지로부터의 분리, 아버지에게로 귀환하는 결구(結構)는 남성 중심의 혼인문화가 유지되어 온 시기의 산물일 가능성은 의문으로 남겨두었다. 독해의 초점을 심학규에게 맞춘다면, 『심청전』은 딸의 탄생과 함께 애착의 방향이 아내에서 딸로 옮겨가고, 딸에 집착하고, 딸의 분리와 혼인에 충격을 받아 심리의 혼란을 겪다가, 궁극에는 딸에 대한 맹목적 환상에서 깨어나는 이야기가 된다. 「내 복에 산다」와의 친연성에 대해서는 가설 차원에서 제기하였다.

영어초록

This paper presented one of viewpoint for reading the tale 『Sim Cheong’s Tale』 by analyzing the systematic correlation between father-daughter relation and the narrative structure. The characteristic of Sim Cheong which is known the most widely and impressively in the world is the devoted daughter’. ‘Devoted Daughter Sim Cheong’ is a kind of idiomatic words in the Korean literature. The viewpoint considering the filial duty as the main theme of 『Sim Cheong’s Tale』 has been the main stream since the early 20th century. Such awareness was fixed as the conventional interpretation and so interrupted experimental and innovative reading. In consideration of the origin of 『Sim Cheong’s Tale』 tracing back to the long times ago and its extensive manifestation, it is highly possible that the filial conduct moral is the trace and expression of a specific period thickly overlaid on the literal works. This study focuses on the narrative itself of Sim Cheong’s Tale putting aside the viewpoint that emphasizes the historic fact and the ethical attitude of the story, and tried to analyze the text of the story from the viewpoint that form speaks all about itself and all descriptions have their implications. As a result two factors were revealed. First, 『Sim Cheong’s Tale』 depicts concretely the psychological pattern between father and daughter and its stream that is the process of ‘substitution of mother by daughter→attachment of father and daughter→separation of father from daughter→exploration of spouse by daughter, marriage→father’s blindness, departure→daughter’s return and father’s gaining eyesight. Second, the development method of relation between father and daughter is tightly organized in the structure of the narrative, creating a specific effect of esthetics. Putting the focus of reading comprehension on Sim Cheong, 『Sim Cheong’s Tale』 is a story about a daughter who tries to be independent by departing from the attachment to her father. On the other hand, looking into the conclusive structure of the story that reflects the separation from father with a condition for marriage (or ending in marriage) and Sim Cheong’s return to her father, the possibility that 『Sim Cheong’s Tale』 is a product of an era that maintained the man-centered marriage culture was left in question. Putting the focus of reading comprehension on Sim Hak-gyu, 『Sim Cheong’s Tale』 is a story about a father whose attachment moves from his wife to his daughter from her birth, sticking to his daughter, suffering from psychological chaos with the shock from daughter’s separation and marriage and ultimately awakening from the blind fantasy about his daughter. A hypothesis that this story has keen relationship with the proverb 「People live according to their fortune」 was presented in this paper.
