고전소설에 나타난 이상사회의 성격과 의미 -「홍길동전」과「허생전」을 대상으로- (Characteristics and Meaning of the Ideal Society in Classical Novels - For「Hong Gil-dong jeon」and「Heo Saeng jeon」-)

초록

본고는 고전소설에 나타난 이상사회의 성격과 의미를 찾고자 하는 목적을 갖는다. 여기에서는 작품에 대한 논의를 철저하게 진행하여 이상사회가 작 품에 어떻게 나타나고 있는지를 구체적으로 파악하고 이를 바탕으로 하여 이 상사회의 사회적 성격을 문학 담당층인 사대부들의 이상사회에 대한 규정에 서 어떤 것에 연유하고 있는지 등을 찾아보는 단계로 나아갔다. 그것에 근거 를 두고 사대부들이 지녔던 이상사회에 대한 사상적 의미 등을 찾아내기도 했 다. 이와 같은 과정을 거쳐 고전소설에 나타난 이상사회는 조선 후기라는 시 대적 배경과 사대부들이 지녔던 유가 이념과 일정하게 연관되어 해석해야 함 을 전제하고 그것에 대해 적극적으로 탐구하는 방식을 택하여 논의를 진행했 다. 그런 점을 찾아낸 것은 본고의 성과로써 인정해야 할 부분이다.
작품에서는 각기 다른 인물형과 서사구조가 나타난다.「홍길동전」의 길동 은 내적 수련보다는 외적 행동을 중시하면서 이에 따라 적극적으로 행동하는 인물형이다. 이런 길동의 인물형은 이상사회 건설의 방식에도 적용되어 서사 구조에도 영향을 미친다. 그는 실제 사회와는 다른 독립된 공간에 새로운 이 상사회를 건설하고자 하며 외적 행동에 일관하는 모습을 보인다. 이는 홍길 동이라는 인물이 이상사회에 가버리고자 하는 의지의 소산이며 그 결과로 작품 서사구조에까지 영향을 미쳐 나타난 현상의 하나다.「홍길동전」은 이상사 회에 가버리는 서사구조를 형성하고 있다. 하지만「허생전」의 허생은 내적 수련을 외적 행동보다는 중시하는 인물로 이상사회의 건설에서도 현실 사회 의 한 부분으로 이상사회를 설정하며 현실에 건설하기도 하고 건설하지 못하 기도 하는 형식을 보여주어 이상사회가 현실의 한 부분임을 보여준다. 허생 이라는 인물이 사대부의 올바른 자세가 무엇이어야 되는지에 대해 계속해서 고민하고 모색하기 때문에 현실사회의 한 영역에 이상사회를 건설하는 형태 를 취하고 있다 하겠다. 서사구조에 있어서도「허생전」은 갔다가 오기의 구 조를 형성하고 있다.
작품에 나타나는 이상사회는 유가에서 내세우는 소강이나 대동의 이상사 회와 같다.「홍길동전」에서 형상화된 이상사회는 대동의 이상사회의 성격을 띠고 있다면「허생전」의 이상사회는 소강의 사회와 대동의 사회라는 이상사 회를 추구한다. 앞에서는 현실과는 독립된 이상사회를 실제로 건설할 수 있 다는 강한 의식을 표출하며 뒤에서는 현실에서 이루어야 할 이상과 미래에 우 리가 추구해 건설해야 할 이상의 꿈을 투영하는 형태를 보이는 것이다. 이렇 게 본다면 이상사회는 사회를 건설하고자 하는 유자들의 일정한 현실에 대한 비판과 그 대안을 현실에서 어떻게 극복하고 마련해야 하는지에 대한 고민과 탐색을 보여주는 결과물로써의 성격을 갖고 있다고 하겠다.
이런 고전소설에 나타난 이상사회는 유가에서 내세우고 조선 후기에 조선 사회를 지배했던 유가의 사상에 일정하게 맥을 대고 있다. 유가에서 인간을 바라보는 관점인 인간론은 인간이 세상의 어떤 존재보다 가치 있는 존재임을 강조하는 데 이런 관점이 작품에는 일정한 논리로 이어진다. 유가에서는 인 간을 최고의 가치를 지닌 존재로 바라보며 그것이 사회에서 어떤 의미를 지닌 존재인지를 중요하게 다룬다. 이런 관점을 고전소설의 이상사회 건설을 다루 는 작품에서는 인간을 다루는 시각으로 일정하게 반영한다. 즉 이상사회 건 설을 추구하는 고전소설에 나타나는 인간은 존재의 가치를 환경에 두고 있거 나 자신의 내적 수련에 두고 있거나 하는 차이를 보여주면서 이것이 인간이 가진 가치를 어떻게 구현해내는가를 중시하는 시각을 보여준다. 이런 점들이 작품에서 출발하여 도출해 낼 수 있는 해석의 중요한 내용이라고 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper aims to find out the nature and meaning of the ideal society shown in the classic novel. Here, we thoroughly discuss the work to understand how the ideal society appears in the work, and based on this, we can find out what the social nature of the ideal society is derived from the regulations on the ideal society of the upperclassmen who are in charge of literature. I proceeded to the step of looking for the back. Based on that, they also found the ideological meaning of the nobles and their ideal society. Through such a process, the ideal society that appeared in the classical novel was discussed by adopting a method of actively exploring it, premised on the premise that it should be interpreted in a certain way in relation to the historical background of the late Joseon Dynasty and the Confucianism ideology possessed by the nobles. Finding such a point is a part that should be acknowledged as an achievement of this paper.
In the works, different character types and narrative structures appear. Gildong in 『Hong Gildongjeon』 is a character type who emphasizes external behavior rather than internal training and actively acts accordingly. Gil-dong's character type is also applied to the method of building an ideal society and is also related to the narrative structure. He wants to build a new ideal society in an independent space different from the real society, and is consistent in his external behavior. This is the result of the character Hong Gil-dong's will to go to an ideal society, and as a result, it is seen as one of the phenomena that has influenced the narrative structure of the work. However, Heo Saeng in 「Heo Saengjeon」 is a person who values inner training rather than external actions, and in the construction of an ideal society, it sets the ideal society as a part of the real society, and shows the form in which it can be built or not built in reality. show that it is part of It can be said that the character Heo Saeng is taking the form of building an ideal society in a realm of society because he is constantly pondering and searching for what should be the correct attitude of the high priest. Even in the narrative structure, 「Heo Saengjeon」 forms a structure of going and coming back.
The ideal society that appears in the work is the same as the ideal society of lulls or daedongs promoted by Confucianism. If the ideal society embodied in 「Hong Gil-dong」 has the characteristics of an ideal society of Daedong, the ideal society of 「Heo Saengjeon」 suggests two ideal societies: a society of sluggishness and a society of Daedong. From the front, it is an expression of a strong consciousness that we can actually build an ideal society independent of reality, and from the back, it is a form of projecting the ideals to be realized in reality and the dreams of reality that we should pursue and build in the future. Seen in this way, it can be said that the ideal society has the character of a result that shows the critics of the certain reality of yujas who want to build a society and the contemplation and exploration of how to overcome and prepare the alternatives in reality.
The ideal society shown in these classic novels was established by Confucianism and has a certain bearing on the Confucian thought that dominated Joseon society in the late Joseon Dynasty. Anthropology, which is the point of view of human beings in Confucianism, emphasizes that human beings are more valuable than any other beings in the world, and the works have the characteristic that this viewpoint leads to a certain logic. In Confucianism, human beings are viewed as beings of the highest value, and the meaning of them in society is taken seriously. In works dealing with the construction of an ideal society in classical novels, this point of view is constantly reflected from the perspective of dealing with humans. In other words, humans appearing in the classic novels that seek to build an ideal society show the difference between putting the value of existence in the environment or in one's own inner training, and show a perspective that emphasizes how this embodies the values of human beings. These points can be seen as important contents of interpretation that can be derived from the work.
