영웅소설의 고난 구조와 후대적 변이 양상 - <소대성전>과 <신유복전>을 중심으로 (Study on the types of tribulations and the changes in heroic fictions with Sodaeseongjeon and Sinyubokjeon)

초록

이 논문은 모색기 영웅소설로서의 <소대성전>과 해체기 영웅소설로서의 <신유복전>을 대상으로 하여 각 작품에 드러난 고난 구조를 살핀 것이다. 고전 영웅소설이 후대에 이르러 독자의 요구를 수용하는 과정에서 어떠한 변화가 있었는지를 논의하고자 하였다. 활자본의 시대가 열리면서 기존의 방각본 소설이 그대로 출판되기도 하고 때로는 새로운 소설이 창작되기도 하였는데, <신유복전>은 그러한 작품 중 하나이다. 영웅인물이 시련을 겪는 이야기는 대부분의 영웅소설에서 모두 나타나지만, 본격적으로 인기를 얻었던 영웅군담소설류에서는 다른 서사 단락에 비해 적은 분량으로 그려졌다. 그러나 1917년에 창작된 <신유복전>에서 주인공의 고난 서사가 큰 비중을 차지하게 되었는데, 이는 당대 현실을 반영하고 독자층의 요구에 부응하려는 작가의식이 나타난 것이라 생각된다. 형성기 영웅소설과 해체기 영웅소설을 고난 구조에 집중하여 비교해 보면, <소대성전>에서는 주인공의 가정적 고난이 약화된 것에 비해, <신유복전>에서는 고난 구조가 매우 확장되어 나타난다. 부모 사망의 고난 구조에서 <소대성전>은 한 단락으로 압축하여 표현하였는데, <신유복전>은 세 차례에 걸쳐 유언을 나열하며 주인공에 대한 독자의 연민을 이끌었다. 유리걸식의 고난 구조에서 <소대성전>은 주인공의 넓은 아량을 형상화하여 영웅성을 표현하는데 집중하였다면, <신유복전>은 걸식과 고독 때문에 주인공이 겪을 수밖에 없었던 고통을 세밀하게 그리고 있어 독자들의 동정심을 충분히 자극하였다. 사위 박대의 고난 구조에서 <소대성전>은 자객을 쉽게 제거할 수 있을 정도로 주인공에게 이미 영웅적 능력이 부여되어 있었으므로 위협의 정도가 완화되었다. 그러나 <신유복전>은 지인지감에 의해 구원될 것 같았던 주인공이 다시 유리걸식의 상황으로 전락하고 있으므로 고난 서사가 훨씬 강렬하게 그려졌다. <신유복전>이 새로 창작되면서 이처럼 고난 구조가 대폭 확장된 것은 대중적 인기를 얻기 위함이었다. 당시에 인기 있었던 영웅서사를 근간으로 하고, 이에 주인공의 초년 고난이라는 슬픈 내용을 소설 전반부에 집중적으로 배치함으로써 당대 독자층을 흡인하고자 한 것이다. <신유복전>은 달라진 시대 상황을 반영하여 고전 영웅소설을 대중의 취향에 적합하도록 구성한 작품이라고 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

One of popular genres of classical novels is heroic fiction, the heroic stories-depicting the process that hero overcomes the given tribulation and punishes the wicked feature- have been very appealing to people in the past. The trend had been continuing even after the printed book became prevalent when the period of block-print books and manuscripts was gone. Some heroic stories were recreated in an effort to satisfy the demands from readers while the heroic stories, once released in block print version, were not changed before their republication. Sinyubokjeon is one of the amended novels for application of the public demands.
Most of heroic fictions lay their foundations on the leading characters’ lives. After Sodaeseongjeon was written in the formative period, which simplifies the part of tribulations that the hero experiences, increasingly, the parts portraying the tribulations had not been included in more new fictions which have been highly acclaimed at that tume. However, Sinyubokjeon has a distinction from other heroic novels in the previous generation, it can be clearly seen that the part of tribulations accounts for wider range of the fiction.
Sinyubokjeon focuses on arousing readers’ sympathy empathy to the hero by elaborating on the sorrow and the last word three times, whereas there is only a paragraph talking about the tribulation of hero: his parent's death in Sodaeseongjeon.
Additionally, Sodaeseongjeon concentrates on describing the heroic aspect of the leading character than dealing with his adverse circumstances in the scene that the character experiences the hardship of mendicancy while Sinyubokjeon tries to arouse readers’ sympathy to the hardship of the leading character caused by solitariness of his live on the street.
When it comes to the scenes of the poor treatment against the leading characters by their wives’ families, the tribulations were not severely or extremely portrayed as the leading character of Sodaeseongjeon already realized the talent to overcome the hardship for himself; however, the hardship was described in the far more extreme way in Sinyubokjeon because the leading character whose circumstances seemed to get better is hopelessly being in distress again.
In the republication of Sinyubokjeon, expanding the range of distressful circumstances is to perceive and earn more public popularity. Many of people’s demands were reflected on the amended version, which had it focus on sorrowful narration, based on the structure of heroic novels that seems very appealing to people. Various adverse circumstances in the fiction seem more extreme and rough than other heroic fictions at that time, they are also described in detail, this is intended to stimulate readers’ emotion so that they could have sympathy to the character. the heroic fictions, one of genres of classical novels, were read and preferred by various social classes; moreover, the wider range of narration and wider part of describing the adverse circumstances brought the advantageous effect to draw the female readers who accounted for the majority of readers of printed books. Sinyubokjeon is a fiction showing that the writers were committed to making the fictions suitable for the era by actively accepting and reflecting the readers’ views to attract them.
