This thesis is written to discuss the theories, and problems in the theories, of the development stage of the Ancient state and the Authoritarian Royal Power narrated in the government-designated High school Korean history textbooks of previous and current editions, and propose a new opinion that can replace them. Since the High school Korean history textbooks began to be developed and compiled under the government designation in 1974, the 3rd and the 3rd revision editions accepted the theory of Tribal State - Tribal confederation - Ancient state, the 4th edition the theory of State (Chiefdom?) - Ancient Kingdom, the 5th and the 6th editions the theory of Chiefdom (Statelet) - Allied Kingdom - Centralized Ancient state and, finally, the 7th edition accepted the theory of the Bu system which is currently widely accepted in the academic circles along with the concept of Allied Kingdom. The authors of the 7th edition textbooks, however, caused problems in the description of the Bu system in their textbook largely because of their lack of understanding of the concept. It is therefore necessary to describe the Bu system correctly in the textbooks by reflecting the views generally accepted among the academic circles.
As for the political development of Unified Silla, the authors of the 3rd to 4th edition textbooks described it by focusing on the consolidation of royal power and the improvement of political systems while those of the 5th edition textbooks chose to adopt the theory of Authoritarian Royal Power as it was raised by Lee ki-baek. In the textbooks of 7th edition, however, the authors stated that the Authoritarian Royal Power collapsed during the Late Silla Period, paving ways to the emergence of the Aristocratic coalition’s political system. Considering that there have been recently a lot of criticisms against the theory of Authoritarian Royal Power, textbook authors need to be careful when they deal with related subjects in the their textbook. By the same token, they need to be prepared to make a total revision if there appears a new theory that offers a systematic description on the process of significant political development.
